The present study evaluated the potential of white-rot fungal strain Coriolus versicolor to decolorize five structurally different dyes in sequential batch reactors under optimized conditions. The experiments were run continuously for seven cycles of 8 d each. High decolorizing activity was observed even during the repeated reuse of the fungus, especially when the old medium was replaced with fresh medium after every cycle. Biodegradation was the dominating factor as the fungus was able to produce the enzyme laccase mainly, to mineralize synthetic dyes. The nutrients and composition of the medium played important roles in sustaining the decolorisation potential of the fungus. Corncob was found be an easy and cheap substitute for carbon source for the fungus. Glucose consumption by the fungus was in accordance to its decolorisation activity and chemical oxygen demand （COD） reduction.

High-performance lithium ion batteries(LIBs) require electrode material to have an ideal electrode construction which provides fast ion transport, short solid-state ion diffusion, large surface area, and high electric conductivity. Herein, highly porous three-dimensional(3D)aerogels composed of cobalt ferrite(CoFe_2O_4, CFO) nanoparticles(NPs) and carbon nanotubes(CNTs) are prepared using sustainable alginate as the precursor. The key feature of this work is that by using the characteristic egg-box structure of the alginate, metal cations such as Co^(2+)and Fe^(3+) can be easily chelated via an ion-exchange process, thus binary CFO are expected to be prepared. In the hybrid aerogels, CFO NPs interconnected by the CNTs are embedded in carbon aerogel matrix, forming the 3D network which can provide high surface area, buffer the volume expansion and offer efficient ion and electron transport pathways for achieving high performance LIBs. The as-prepared hybrid aerogels with the optimum CNT content(20 wt%) delivers excellent electrochemical properties, i.e., reversible capacity of 1033 mAh g^(-1) at 0.1 A g^(-1) and a high specific capacity of 874 mAh g^(-1) after 160 cycles at 1 A g^(-1). This work provides a facile and low cost route to fabricate high performance anodes for LIBs.

Poly(azure blue II) (PABII) thin film modified electrode was successfully assembled on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode by means of electrochemical polymerization, which was carried out with cyclic voltammetric sweeping in the potential range of -0.6 to +1.3 V (vs. SCE) in Britton-Robinson buffer solution (pH=9.8) containing 1.25×10 -4 mol/L azure blue II. The effect of pH on the polymerization process of azure blue II and the electrochemical characteristics of the polymer-modified electrodes were studied in detail. The experimental results indicated that the electropolymerization of azure blue II could take place in basic or neutral media. The cyclic voltammograms of poly(azure blue II) thin film modified electrode showed the presence of two couples of redox peaks. The film modified electrode exhibited potent and persistent electrocatalysis for oxidation of dihydronicotiamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) in phosphate buffer media with a diminution of the overpotential of about 410 mV and an increase in peak current. The presence of some divalent cations in an electrolyte can greatly enhance the electrocatalytic current for oxidation of NADH. The electrocatalytic current increased linearly with NADH concentration from 1.0×10 -5 to 8.0×10 -3 mol/L in the presence of 4.0×10 -2 mol/L Mg 2+ cation. The detection limit (3s b1/S) was 5.0×10 -6 mol/L, and the relative standard deviation of determination results was 4.2% for six successive determinations of 5.0×10 -4 mol/L NADH in the presence of Mg 2+ cation.

Al nanopowders with diameters ranging from 20 to 50 nm passivated by Al2O3 coatings were produced by two different evaporation routes: induction heating evaporation (IHE) and laser-induction complex heating evaporation (LCHE). Thermal property of the nanopowders was investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA) in dry oxygen environment. The results show that Al nanopowders produced by LCHE have the oxidation enthalpy change (△H) of 3.54 kJ/g, while the △H of Al produced by IHE is 1.18 kJ/g. The phase constitution and microstructures of these nanopowders were revealed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electronic microscopy (HRTEM). The results show that the two powders have the same composition and mean particle size, as well as the thickness of Al2O3 coatings (3-5 nm). Defects were observed on the surfaces of the particles by LCHE. However, the defects were not detected by HRTEM on the surfaces of the particles by IHE. The results prove that there exists excessive stored energy in Al nanopowders by LCHE because of the nonequilibrium condition brought by laser and the defects are the storage area of the excessive stored energy. Propellants composed of Al nanopowders by LCHE show higher energy level and specific impulse.

Distribution and sources of solvent extractable organic compounds in PM_(2.5) during 2007 Chinese Spring Festival in Beijing

The solvent extractable organic compounds （SEOC）, including n-alkanes, polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons, fatty acids, and dicarboxylic acids in PM2.5 during the 2007 Chinese Spring Festival in Beijing, were measured via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for determining the characteristics and sources of these organic pollutants. The concentrations of total n-alkanes, PAHs, and organic acids before Chinese Spring Festival Eve （1025.5, 95.9, and 543.3 ng/m3, respectively） were higher than those after （536.6, 58.9, and 331.8 ng/m3, respectively）, n-Aalkanes and PAHs had much higher concentration in nighttime than those in daytime because of high relative humidity and low wind speed during the night. Combustion of coal and exhaust emission were major sources of n- alkanes. It could be concluded by the characteristic ratios that the primary source of PAHs in fine particles was the combustion of coal, but the combustion of gasoline was in the next place. The ratios of C18：0/C16 indicated the contribution of vehicular emissions to the fatty acids. Dicarboxylic and aromatic acids were abundant in daytime than in nighttime because these acids were secondary organic acid and the photochemical degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons was the main source.

Glycerol steam reforming(GSR)is one of the promising technologies that can realize renewable hydrogen production and efficient utilization of crude *** illuminate the functions of Ca content(3%,6%,9%,and 12%,by mass)and preparation method for Ni/ATP catalyst structure and its catalytic behaviors,the Ni-xCa/ATP(x=3%,6%,9%,and 12%,by mass)catalysts are prepared by co-impregnation(ci)and hydrothermal synthesis(hs)method and then tested in *** results of XRD,N_(2) adsorption–desorption,H_(2)-TPR,HRTEM,XPS,and NH_(3)/CO_(2)-TPD demonstrate that the combined effect between appropriate Ca additive(6%,by mass)and hs enhance catalyst reducibility,uniform distribution of Ca additive and nickel species over ATP,and adsorption for CO_(2).This attributes to hs method protects the ATP framework through suppressing the interaction of Ca with ATP and promotes the formation of NiCaOx interface ***,Ni-6Ca/ATP-hs exhibits the highest conversion(86.77%)of glycerol to gas product and H_(2) yield(76.17%)and selectivity(58.56%)during ***,XRD,HRTEM,TGDTG and Raman analyses confirm that Ni-6Ca/ATP-hs also reveals outstanding anti-sintering and coke *** addition,the structural evolution process of Ni/ATP catalyst with Ca introduction and hs method is *** the high performance,simple preparation process and low cost,the as-prepared catalyst providing new opportunities for utilization of glycerol derived from biodiesel industry.

Eco-friendly reduced graphene oxide for the determination of mycophenolate mofetil in pharmaceutical formulations

Graphene oxide(GO) was synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX), atomic force microscopy(AFM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). GO was then electrochemically reduced and used for electrochemical study of mycophenolate mofetil(MMF). The electrochemically reduced graphene oxide(ERGO) film on glassy carbon electrode(GCE) showed enhanced peak current for electrooxidation of MMF. MMF exhibited two irreversible oxidation peaks at 0.84 V(peak a_1)and 1.1 V(peak a_2). Effects of accumulation time, pH and scan rate were studied and various electrochemical parameters were calculated. A differential pulse voltammetric method was developed for the determination of MMF in bulk samples and pharmaceutical formulations. Linear relationship was observed between the peak current and concentration of MMF in the range of 40 nM–15 μM with a limit of detection of 11.3 nM. The proposed method is simple, sensitive and inexpensive and, hence, could be readily adopted in clinical and quality control laboratories.

Previous studies have confirmed that intervertebral disc degeneration(IDD)is closely associated with inflammation-induced reactive oxygen species(ROS)and resultant cell mitochondrial membrane potential(MMP)*** of ROS in an inflammatory environment is essential for breaking the vicious cycle of MMP ***,re-energizing the mitochondria damaged in the inflammatory milieu to restore their function,is equally ***,we proposed an interesting concept of mitochondrion-engine equipped with coolant,which enables first to“cool-down”the inflammatory environment,next to restore the MMP,finally to allow cells to regain normal energy metabolism through materials *** such,we developed a multifunctional composite composed of a reactive oxygen species(ROS)-responsive sodium alginate/gelatin hydrogel infused into a rigid 3D-printed thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU)*** TPU scaffold was coated with conductive polypyrrole(PPy)to electrophoretically deposit L-arginine,which could upregulate the Mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR)pathway,thus increasing MMP and energy metabolism to stimulate extracellular matrix synthesis for IVD *** the ROS-responsive hydrogel acting as the“mito-engine coolant”could scavenge the excessive ROS to create a favorable environment for IVD cells *** by in vitro and in vivo evaluations,the mito-engine system markedly promoted the proliferation and collagen synthesis of nucleus pulposus cells while enhancing the mitochondrial respiration and MMP under oxidative *** and histological assessments in vivo revealed the efficacy of this system in IVD *** unique bioinspired design integrated biomaterial science with mitochondrial biology,presents a promising paradigm for IDD treatment.

Acetone is regarded as a promising biomarker for the noninvasive diagnosis and monitoring of *** collected breath acetone from 25 type 2 diabetics(T2D)and 44 healthy subjects using aluminum foil bags(3 L),and the samples were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry.T2D patients had significantly higher acetone levels(mean=2.167 ppmv(1 ppmv=1 lL/L),standard error(SE)=0.231)than healthy volunteers(mean=0.488 ppmv,SE=0.025;P\0.0001).The receiver operating characteristics curve showed that the optimum diagnostic cutoff value for exhaled acetone was 0.891 ppmv(area under the curve 0.999,sensitivity 100%,and specificity 97.7%)in T2D patients relative to healthy ***,breath acetone could be a useful marker for the high accuracy diagnosis and monitoring of *** addition,the ratios of the mean acetone concentration in ambient air relative to that in the total exhaled air and in the net exhaled air were 1:18 and 1:17,*** post-breakfast acetone concentrations(mean=0.437 ppmv,SE=0.035)were slightly lower than the pre-breakfast levels(mean=0.553 ppmv,SE=0.047;P[0.05).Thus,the increased acetone concentrations in T2D patients are affected strongly by physiological factors related to the disease,rather than the ambient air and diet.
