Background and Aims:Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)is driven by high caloric intake and sedentary *** towards high income countries may induce these driving factors;yet,the influence of such on the prevalence of MAFLD is clearly ***,we investigated the Fatty Liver Index(FLI),a proxy of steatosis in MAFLD,after migration of Ghanaian ***:Cross-sectional data of 5282 rural,urban and migrant participants from the Research on Obesity and Diabetes among African Migrants(also known as RODAM)study were analyzed with logistic regression for geographical differences in FLI and associations with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),waist-to-hip ratio,and 10-year predicted risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease(ASCVD).Results:Both FLI and the proportion with an FLI indicative of MAFLD steatosis(FLI≥60)were higher in migrants compared with *** of elevated FLI(FLI≥60)in non-migrant males was 4.2%compared to 28.9%in *** females,a similar gradient was observed,from 13.6%to 36.6%*** to rural residents,the odds for a FLI≥60 were higher in migrants living in urban Europe(odds ratio[OR]9.02,95%confidence interval[CI]:5.02–16.20 for men,and 4.00,95%CI:3.00–5.34 for women).Compared to controls,the ORs for FLI≥60 were 2.43(95%CI:1.73–3.41)for male T2DM cases and 2.02(95%CI:1.52–2.69)for female T2DM ***-unit higher FLI was associated with an elevated(≥7.5%)10-year ASCVD risk(OR:1.051,95%CI:1.041–1.062 for men,and 1.020,95%CI:1.015–1.026 for women).Conclusions:FLI as a proxy for MAFLD increased stepwise in Ghanaians from rural areas,through urban areas,to *** results clearly warrant awareness for MAFLD in migrant population as well as confirmation with imaging modalities.

To the editor:In the USA alone,there were 1.7 million suicide attempts in 2021.1 Although the majority of suicide attempts are not fatal,immediate medical attention is often necessary,especially when violent methods are used.2 These methods include jumping from heights,using a firearm,crashing a motor vehicle,and lying down or jumping in front of a moving object.

Ovo-like transcriptional repressor 1(OVOL1)is a key mediator of epithelial lineage determination and mesenchymal–epithelial transition(MET).The cytokines transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β)and bone morphogenetic proteins(BMP)control the epithelial–mesenchymal plasticity(EMP)of cancer cells,but whether this occurs through interplay with OVOL1 is not ***,we show that OVOL1 is inversely correlated with the epithelial–mesenchymal transition(EMT)signature,and is an indicator of a favorable prognosis for breast cancer ***1 suppresses EMT.

Background:Early detection and treatment of neuropathy in leprosy is important to prevent disabilities.A recent study showed that the Nerve Conduction Studies(NCS)and Warm Detection Thresholds(WDT)tests can detect leprosy neuropathy the *** two tests are not practical under field conditions,however,because they require climate-controlled rooms and highly trained staff and are *** assessed the usefulness of alternative test methods and their sensitivity and specificity to detect neuropathy at an early ***:Through a literature search we identified five alternative devices that appeared user-friendly,more affordable,portable and/or battery-operated:the Neuropad^(■),Vibratip^(TM),NC-Stat^(■)DPNCheck^(TM),NeuroQuick and the Thermal Sensibility Tester(TST),assessing respectively sweat function,vibration sensation,nerve conduction,cold sensation and warm *** leprosy patients in Bangladesh,the posterior tibial and sural nerves that tested normal for the monofilament test and voluntary muscle test were assessed with the NCS and WDT as reference standard *** alternative devices were then tested on 94 nerves with abnormal WDT and/or NCS results and on 94 unaffected *** and specificity were the main ***:The NeuroQuick and the TST showed very good sensitivity and *** the sural nerve,the NeuroQuick had both a sensitivity and a specificity of 86%.The TST had a sensitivity of 83%and a specificity of 82%.Both the NC-Stat^(■)DPNCheck^(TM)and Vibratip^(TM)had a high specificity(88%and 100%),but a low sensitivity(16%and 0%).On the posterior tibial nerve,the NeuroQuick and the TST also showed good sensitivity,but the sensitivity was lower than for the sural *** Neuropad^(■)had a sensitivity of 56%and a specificity of 61%.Conclusions:The NeuroQuick and TST are good candidates for further field-testing for reliability and *** feasibility of production on a larger scale should be exami

Maintenance of protein homeostasis or“proteostasis”is essential for the functioning and viability of *** is in particular the case for cells like neurons that cannot self-renew and acquire unique functional properties during their *** proteostatic stress responses are in place to protect cells from damage in case of proteostatic *** integrated stress response(ISR)is one of the key proteostatic stress responses in the cell(Costa-Mattioli and Walter,2020).The ISR is the downstream convergence point for the four stress-induced eIF2αkinases(EIF2AK1-4)that control stress-regulated protein translation via phosphorylation of the translation factor eIF2α.ISR activation results in a transient reduction of global translation while it concomitantly enhances the translation of specific mRNAs,including that encoding the activating transcription factor 4(ATF4).Together,the translational control mediated by the ISR results in a temporary reduction of the overall protein load and the selectively increased expression of proteins that contribute to restoration of the proteostatic balance.

Are University Rankings Statistically Significant?A Comparison among Chinese Universities and with the USA

Purpose:Building on Leydesdorff,Bornmann,and Mingers(2019),we elaborate the differences between Tsinghua and Zhejiang University as an empirical *** address the question of whether differences are statistically significant in the rankings of Chinese *** propose methods for measuring statistical significance among different universities within or among ***/methodology/approach:Based on z-testing and overlapping confidence intervals,and using data about 205 Chinese universities included in the Leiden Rankings 2020,we argue that three main groups of Chinese research universities can be distinguished(low,middle,and high).Findings:When the sample of 205 Chinese universities is merged with the 197 US universities included in Leiden Rankings 2020,the results similarly indicate three main groups:low,middle,and *** this data(Leiden Rankings and Web of Science),the z-scores of the Chinese universities are significantly below those of the US universities albeit with some *** limitations:We show empirically that differences in ranking may be due to changes in the data,the models,or the modeling effects on the *** scientometric groupings are not always stable when we use different *** implications:Differences among universities can be tested for their statistical *** statistics relativize the values of decimals in the *** can operate with a scheme of low/middle/high in policy debates and leave the more fine-grained rankings of individual universities to operational management and local ***/value:In the discussion about the rankings of universities,the question of whether differences are statistically significant,has,in our opinion,insufficiently been addressed in research evaluations.

Malaria among Children in Suriname, South America

Malaria in children is a serious infectious disease. In Suriname, many children died due to malaria in the past. To prevent malaria in children, anti-malaria campaigns were executed. The last campaign was implemented from 2005 to 2010. To develop a strategy for the future, the current prevalence and mortality rates are needed. Since 1955, all confirmed malaria cases were registered by the Medical Mission and this database was used to determine the prevalence rate. For the mortality rates we used the cause of death which was registered on death certificates. Since 2005 no children died due to malaria. Also the prevalence rate dropped dramatically from 7255 in 2001 to 10 in 2014. However, despite these great results, 10 children were still diagnosed with malaria and there is a need for continuous attention to bring this number down to zero. The mobile goldmine workers can impose a threat for a new malaria epidemic, if they spread the malaria infection in Suriname. Therefore, effective prevention measures and treatment are still needed.
