Photogenerated charge separation and transfer is one of the bottleneck steps in photocatalysis,and efficient charge separation strategies are strongly ***,mimicking the electron transport chain in natural photosynthesis,we report the design and fabrication of a charge transfer chain using bismuth-based semiconductor as a *** view of the thermodynamic energy band positions and structural similarity based on the density functional theory(DFT)analysis,heterostructured combination ofα-Bi_(2)O_(3),perovskite-like Bi_(4)Ti_(3)O_(12),and sillenite Bi12TiO20 was designed for fabrication of charge transfer *** tuning the molar ratio of Bi and Ti precursors,the Bi_(4)Ti_(3)O_(12)and Bi12TiO20 particles were formed on the surface ofα-Bi_(2)O_(3)by an insitu transformation process,giving rise to Bi_(12)TiO_(20)-Bi_(4)Ti_(3)O_(12)/α-Bi_(2)O_(3)composites with charge transfer *** propose that the effective charge transfer is accomplished amongα-Bi_(2)O_(3),Bi12TiO20,and Bi_(4)Ti_(3)O_(12),which significantly improves the photogenerated charge separation and transfer,as indicated by photoluminescene,time-resolved photoluminescene,and electrochemical impedance spectra *** expected,the Bi_(12)TiO_(20)-Bi_(4)Ti_(3)O_(12)/α-Bi_(2)O_(3)shows the superior photocatalytic activity for the degradation of environmental pollutants with high *** for the refractory pollutants like 4-chlorophenol,the optimal Bi_(12)TiO_(20)-Bi_(4)Ti_(3)O_(12)/α-Bi_(2)O_(3)composite shows 28 times higher than that ofα-Bi_(2)O_(3)for photocatalytic degradation,verifying the superiority of photogenerated charge transfer chain in *** work demonstrates the feasibility of the charge transfer chain strategy to boost the photogenerated charge separation,which is of great significance for designing energy and environmental-related materials in heterogonous photocatalysis.

The Bemisia tabaci species complex： Additions from different parts of the world

Bemisia tabaci is one of the most threatening pests in many crops. We sequenced part of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene from fifty whitefly populations collected in Indonesia, Thailand, India and China. Nineteen unique sequences （haplotypes） of the cytochrome oxidase I were identified in these populations. They were combined with sequences available in databases, resulting in a total of 407 haplotypes and analyzed together with nine outgroup accessions. A phylogenetic tree was calculated using the maximum likelihood method. The tree showed that all groups that were found in previous studies were also present in our study. Additionally, seven new groups were identified based on the new haplotypes. Most B. tabaci haplotypes grouped based on their geographical origin. Two groups were found to have a worldwide distribution. Our results indicate that our knowledge on the species complex around B. tabaci is still far from complete.

Identification of technology options for reducing nitrogen pollution in cropping systems of Pujiang

This work analyses the potential role of nitrogen pollution technology of crop systems of Pujiang, County in Eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, rice and vegetables are important cropping systems. We used a case study approach involving com- parison of farmer practices and improved technologies. This approach allows assessing the impact of technology on pollution, is forward looking, and can yield information on the potential of on-the-shelf technology and provide opportunities for technology development. The approach particularly suits newly developed rice technologies with large potential of reducing nitrogen pollu- tion and for future rice and vegetables technologies. The results showed that substantial reductions in nitrogen pollution are fea- sible for both types of crops.

Governance interactions of spatial data infrastructures: an agent-based modelling approach

In order to facilitate and coordinate spatial data sharing and exchange,many organisations have developed spatial data infrastructures(SDIs).SDI governance plays a pivotal role in the development and evolution of an SDI,but as SDIs are complex adaptive systems,governing is a *** research therefore proposes a complexity perspective to SDI governance by exploring the use of agent-based modelling to simulate and examine SDI governance *** this agent-based simulation,we examine interactions between SDI stakeholders,data availability and the effects of different governance styles(hierarchical,network and laissez-faire governance)and budget *** simulation shows that it is possible to mimic SDI governance dynamics through agent-based *** running different scenarios,it appears that a network approach is more successful compared to a hierarchical or laissez-faire *** validation shows that overall the results of the simulation are credible and insightful,although improvements can be made to make the model more *** agent-based modelling,SDI governance becomes more tangible and visible,which facilitates discussion and ***-based modelling therefore appears to be a helpful new approach in a better understanding of the complexities and dynamics of SDI governance.

Recent technological advances mean that samples from animal experiments may be analysed more cheaply,more easily and with a much greater return of data than *** groups are frequently faced with a choice of continuing to use established technology in which they may have made a significant investment of time and resources,and have significant amounts of reference data,or switching to new technology where reference data may be *** from cost,the choice needs to be based on a comparison between the increase in data available from future experiments by switching and the value of comparison with reference data from historical experiments analysed with earlier *** approach to this problem is to ensure that sufficient quantity and variety of samples are taken from each experiment and appropriately stored to allow re-establishment of a sufficiently large reference set and to avoid the need to repeat animal *** establishment of ‘biobanks' of experimental material will require funding for infrastructure,consistent storage of metadata and,importantly,horizon-scanning to ensure that samples are taken appropriately for techniques which will become accessible in *** biobanks are a recognised resource in human medicine,where the value of samples increases as more analysis is carried out and added to the metadata.

Multispecies hybridization in birds

Hybridization is not always limited to two species;often multiple species are interbreeding. In birds, there are numerous examples of species that hybridize with multiple other species. The advent of genomic data provides the oppotunity to investigate the ecological and evolutionary consequences of multispecies hybridization. The interactions between several hybridizing species can be depicted as a network in which the interacting species are connected by edges. Such hybrid networks can be used to identify ‘hub-species’ that interbreed with multiple other species. Avian examples of such ‘hub-species’ are Common Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and European Herring Gull (Larus argentatus). These networks might lead to the formulation of hypotheses, such as which connections are most likely conducive to interspecific gene flow (i.e. introgression). Hybridization does not necessarily result in introgression. Numerous statistical tests are available to infer interspecific gene flow from genetic data and the majority of these tests can be applied in a multispecies setting. Specifically, model-based approaches and phylogenetic networks are promising in the detection and characterization of multispecies introgression. It remains to be determined how common multispecies introgression in birds is and how often this process fuels adaptive changes. Moreover, the impact of multispecies hybridization on the build-up of reproductive isolation and the architecture of genomic landscapes remains elusive. For example, introgression between certain species might contribute to increased divergence and reproductive isolation between those species and other related species. In the end, a multispecies perspective on hybridization in combination with network approaches will lead to important insights into the history of life on this planet.

Modeling the impact of dam removal on channel evolution and sediment delivery in a multiple dam setting

Dam removal can generate geomorphic disturbances,including channel bed and bank erosion and associated abrupt/pulsed release and downstream transfer of reservoir sediment,but the type and rate of geomorphic response often are hard to *** situation gets even more complex in systems which have been impacted by multiple dams and a long and complex engineering *** previous studies one-dimensional(1-D) models were used to predict aspects of post-removal channel ***,these models do not consider two-dimensional(2-D) effects of dam removal such as bank erosion processes and lateral *** the current study the impacts of multiple dams and their removal on channel evolution and sediment delivery were modeled by using a 2-D landscape evolution model(CAESAR-Lisflood) focusing on the following aspects:patterns,rates,and processes of geomorphic change and associated sediment delivery on annual to decadal *** current modeling study revealed that geomorphic response to dam removal(i.e.,channel evolution and associated rates of sediment delivery) in multiple dam settings is variable and complex in space and *** in geomorphic system response is related to differences in dam size,the proximity of upstream dams,related buffering effects and associated rates of upstream sediment supply,and emerging feedback processes as well as to the presence of channel stabilization *** types and rates of geomorphic adjustment,using the 2-D landscape evolution model CAESAR-Lisflood,are similar to those reported in previous ***,the use of a 2-D method showed some advantages compared to1-D models,generating spatially varying patterns of erosion and deposition before and after dam removal that provide morphologies that are more readily comparable to field data as well as features like the lateral re-working of past reservoir deposits which further enables the maintenance of sediment delivery downstream.
