On the optimisation of age of the air in the breathing zone of floor heating systems:The role of ventilation design

For a mechanically ventilated space,the nominal age of the air can be obtained by the reciprocal of the air change ***,values of the local mean age of the air in practice may differ to some extent from the nominal one since the nominal time constant employs as reference the theoretical optimum *** discrepancy could become more prominent in spaces conditioning with both ventilation and heating system where the indoor air pattern is affected by turbulent mixed convection *** importance of knowledge on the distribution of age of the air in these spaces,the present study provides insights on how ventilation design in floor heating systems can optimise the delivery of fresh air into the breathing *** this context,by establishing a computational fluid dynamic(CFD)model validated against experimental data,the local mean age of the air as well as the indoor air quality(IAQ)indices in the breathing zone of the floor heating system are examined under different ventilation *** different ventilation scenarios are regarded in order to find the optimal ventilation design in terms of the delivery of the fresh air and ventilation effectiveness in occupied ***,the integrated effects of the floor temperature and inlet supply temperature along with the ventilation design on the distribution of local age of the air are *** obtained results indicate that the up-supply ventilation strategy is more efficient than down-supply one in the ventilation effectiveness and delivery of fresh air into the breathing ***,it is shown that the mean age of the air in the breathing zone of the up-supply ventilation increases with increment of the Ri(Richardson number),whereas an increase in Ri improves the delivery of fresh air in down-supply *** a given floor temperature,the similar trend is also observed in the variation of age of the air with the characteristic temperature of supply inlet,namely the temperature difference between

Use of bio-based products towards more sustainable road paving binders: A state-of-the-art review

Many industrial sectors exploit fossil sources to develop useful and necessary materials for our needs,such as bituminous paving ***,a key component of asphalt mixtures,is derived from oil refining and its properties are influenced by the crude oil source and refining process,resulting in a significant carbon *** growing awareness of resource depletion and environmental concerns,pavement researchers are exploring sustainable alternatives to reduce dependence on fossil *** includes a rising trend in using renewable materials like biomasses to produce bio-based binders as substitutes for bitumen,aiming for a more sustainable ***,including vegetal and animal wastes,and waste cooking oils,as substitutes for crude oil in the production of *** thermochemical conversion(TCC),such as pyrolysis,biomasses can be converted into bio-char and bio-oils,which can replace fossil-based components in *** have utilized these bio-products to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels in ***,there are no set minimum requirements for bio-components in bio-based *** the percentage of replaced bitumen increases,various types of binders are produced,including modified bitumen,extended bitumen,and alternative binders,where the fossil replacement is *** rheological tests on bio-binders,reveal that those containing biochar exhibit increased viscosity,stiffness,rutting resistance,and sometimes antioxidant ***,bio-binders with bio-oils as bitumen substitutes show poorer performance at high temperatures but improved behavior at low *** results suggest that bio-binders could provide versatile solutions for various climatic and loading conditions in road ***,the development of pavement mixtures based on bio-binders has not been studied in depth and requires further attention to unlock its full *** sustainability considerations,includin

Understanding the neural underpinning of human gait and balance is one of the most pertinent challenges for 21st-century translational neuroscience due to the profound impact that falls and mobility disturbances have on our aging *** and gait control does not happen automatically,as previously believed,but rather requires continuous involvement of central nervous *** effectively exert control over the body,the brain must integrate multiple streams of sensory information,including visual,vestibular,and somatosensory *** mechanisms which underpin the integration of these multisensory signals are the principal topic of the present *** multisensory integration theories focus on how failure of cognitive processes thought to be involved in multisensory integration leads to falls in older *** emphasis,however,has been placed on specific contributions of individual sensory modalities to multisensory integration processes and cross-modal interactions that occur between the sensory modalities in relation to gait and *** the present work,we review the contributions of somatosensory,visual,and vestibular modalities,along with their multisensory intersections to gait and balance in older adults and patients with Parkinson’s *** also review evidence of vestibular contributions to multisensory temporal binding windows,previously shown to be highly pertinent to fall risk in older ***,we relate multisensory vestibular mechanisms to potential neural substrates,both at the level of neurobiology(concerning positron emission tomography imaging)and at the level of electrophysiology(concerning electroencephalography).We hope that this integrative review,drawing influence across multiple subdisciplines of neuroscience,paves the way for novel research directions and therapeutic neuromodulatory approaches,to improve the lives of older adults and patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

The novel coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is an ongoing disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 that still poses an important and urgent threat to global *** Slovenia,the epidemic was declared on March 12th,2020,and since then COVID-19 has had a great impact on our health *** field of neurosurgery in particular has been experiencing difficulties in both elective and emergency *** this article,we described epidemiologic protocols and the effect that the COVID-19 pandemic had on the surgical practice and workflow of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Medical Centre *** analyzed and compared the number of elective and emergency neurosurgical procedures in a 2-year period before and during the *** recorded a drop in cases mostly on account of elective procedures whilst emergency service remained relatively unaffected.

Pain in chronic pancreatitis:What can we do today?

Key stakeholders’ perspectives on the ideal partnering culture in construction projects

This paper examines the current state of project cultures in the German turnkey construction industry and the ideal project cultures in terms of partnering from the perspective of various key stakeholders(i.e.,Investors,General Contractors,(Sub-)Contractors and Designers).To investigate the current and ideal cultures,data were gathered among the key stakeholders by means of a survey study with 72 respondents divided over 12 *** respondents rated the current and desired cultures by using the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument,which belongs to the Competing Values *** investigations show many similarities and differences between the stakeholder perspectives of the current and the idealized partnering project ***,the General Contractors desire more cooperative behaviors than the(Sub-)Contractors,and the Investors desire more pronounced flexibility than the General *** stakeholders desire a cultural change from highly competitive behaviors toward more *** in terms of clear procedures or more flexibility are only desired by the *** both the current and an ideal partnering project culture enables academics and project managers to compare their actual project cultures to an ideal *** such an approach,academics and project managers could measure whether new tools or changes in resources affect their project cultures toward a partnering project culture.

To the Editor: As we all know, even with the current advancements regarding novel chemotherapy regimens, patients affected by pancreatic cancer(PC) have an extremely dismal prognosis(5-year survival rate 12% for all stages in the National Cancer Institute SEER database). Among the patients undergoing surgical treatment, the prognosis is mostly affected by recurrence. PC after surgery has mainly four patterns of recurrence, isolated or variously associated with each other: local, lymph nodal, peritoneal or distant(liver, lung, other sites).

In this era of biodiversity loss and climate change,quantifying the impacts of natural disturbance on forest communities is imperative to improve biodiversity conservation *** and epixylic lichens are effective forest quality bioindicators,as they are generally long-lived organisms supported by continuity of specific forest structures and their associated microclimatic ***,how lichen communities respond to the effects of fluctuating historical disturbances remains *** a dendrochronological approach,this study investigates how natural disturbance dynamics indirectly influence various lichen community metrics in some of Europe's best-preserved primary mixed-beech *** modelling revealed that natural historical disturbance processes have decades-long effects on forest structural attributes,which had both congruent and divergent impacts on lichen community richness and *** species richness indirectly benefited from both historical and recent higher-severity disturbances via increased standing dead tree basal area and canopy openness respectively-likely through the presence of both pioneer and late-successional species associated with these ***-listed species richness showed a dependence on habitat continuity(old trees),and increased with disturbance-related structures(standing dead trees)whilst simultaneously benefiting from periods without severe disturbance events(old trees and reduced deadwood volume).However,if the disturbance occurred over a century in the past,no substantial effect on forest structure was ***,while disturbance-mediated forest structures can promote overall richness,threatened species appear vulnerable to more severe disturbance events-a concern,as disturbances are predicted to intensify with climate ***,the high number of threatened species found reinforce the critical role of primary forest structural attributes for biodiversity ***
