Spatial variability of summer and autumn phytoplankton community structure in Xiamen Western Bay based on pigment analysis

The spatial variations of phytoplankton community structure in the Xiamen Western Bay during the summer and autumn cruises in 2001 were investigated based on HPLC analysis of photosynthetic pigments in algal cells and CHEMTAX processing of pigment data. The Chl a concentration reached 18.9 μg/L in the summer and declined to 0.28–2.17 in the autumn, respectively, consistent with the observation of diatom blooms in June. Among the accessory pigments, fucoxanthin was consistently the most abundant, ranging from 0.172 to 8.46 μg/L, with the maximum concentrations in June. 19’- hexfucoxanthin and alloxanthin were the other two abundant pigments in the summer and autumn. In addition, 19’-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin or peridinin was also important in late autumn. Generally the biomass of all the phytoplankton or each group was higher in the inner part than the mouth of this bay, represented by Chl a. CHEMTAX processing revealed the dominance of diatoms with their contribution of 14.6%–52.5% to the total Chl a, but its importance decreased in the autumn. Cryptophytes and Haptophytes, with an average contribution of 16.9%–31.4% and 12.1%–26.3%, were the other two important groups, especially in the autumn. On the contrary, Dinoflagellates and Chlorophytes were the minor groups, but the former became important sporadically in the autumn. It was suggested that there was distinctive variation in both the phytoplankton community structure and biomass between summer and autumn in the Xiamen Western Bay and the latter was coupled to the changes in temperature and dissolved oxygen. However, the spatial variation of the phytoplankton community structure was not as clear as the trend in the biomass of phytoplankton among all the sites in this bay.

Size-based partitioning of phytoplankton is a useful tool for monitoring key phytoplankton traits, and it provides a better understanding of phytoplankton dynamics. Our aim is to determine the variation in the different size classes of phytoplankton to the total phytoplankton biomass during the spring and autumn of 2010 and examine the relationship between phytoplankton size structure and environmental variables and zooplankton community structure near the Changjiang Estuary. In the spring, phytoplankton populations were predominantly consisted of nanophytoplankton throughout the study region. In the autumn, picophytoplankton and nanophytoplankton collectively dominated the phytoplankton community. A Pearson correlation analysis highlighted the role of temperature and trophic conditions on the contributions of nanophytoplankton and picophytoplankton. The grazing pressure exerted by mesozooplankton could have played an important role in determining the microphytoplankton community structure.

In this study, we report a two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal disk obtained by carbonization of Botryococcus braunii (B. braunii) residues. Carbonization at 700℃followed by naturally cooling down to room temperature under a non-inert gas flow atmosphere affords to yield this unique structure. The 2D hexagonal disks consist of more than 52% carbon and more than 25% oxygen. Slight amount of Fe, silicon and magnesium would be the trigger of the formation of hexagonal structure. Treatment of biomass residue is a challenge in the near future accompanied by the achievement of new energy technology in the industrial level. This research points out that efficient use of discharged biomass residue could create a new avenue for material science. The morphology of obtained crystals carbonized in different conditions, especially with the existence of argon flow, was also investigated.

The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii,a well-established model organism,has been widely used in dissecting glycerolipid metabolism in oxygenating photosynthetic *** previous studies,it has been found that shunting carbon precursors from the starch synthesis pathway can lead to a 10-fold increase in TAG content as compared to the wild type,but it is unknown whether inactivation of AGPase may affect membrane lipids *** study aims to investigate global changes in lipid metabolism and homeostasis in the starchless mutant *** *** utilizing an electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry(ESI/MS)-based lipidomics approach,a total of 105 membrane lipid molecules of *** were resolved,including 16 monogalactosyldiacylglycerol(MGDG),16 digalactosyldiacylglycerol(DGDG),11 phosphatidylglycerol(PG),6 sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol(SQDG),49 diacylglyceryl-N,N,N-trimethylhomoserine(DGTS),2 phosphatidylethanolamine(PE),and 5 phosphatidylinositol(PI)*** quantitative results indicated that the membrane lipid profiles were similar between the two *** strains grown under both low-and high-light conditions,but the cellular contents of a great number of lipids were altered in sta6 due to the defect in starch *** low-light conditions,sta6 accumulated more PI,MGDG,DGDG but less amounts of DGTS as compared to *** high light,sta6 cells contained higher content membrane lipids than cc-124,except for PG,which is more or less similar in both *** results demonstrate that the cellular membrane lipid homeostasis underwent profound changes in the starchless mutant,and thereby its physiological impact remains to be explored.

Enhanced microalgae cultivation using digested kitchen waste sewage treated with struvite precipitation

This study demonstrated the feasibility of using struvite for nutrient management in algae cultivation on sewage *** results showed that struvite precipitation treatment dramatically reduced the ammonia in the digested kitchen waste *** untreated sewage was unable to sustain continuous growth of algae,while the algae growth on the treated sewage was comparable with that on an artificial algae culture medium(BG11).The rapid growth on the treated sewage was accompanied by substantial removal of *** struvite precipitate recovered from the treated sewage was proven to be an alternative source of nitrogen,phosphorus and *** struvite precipitate was evidenced that it could substitute culture media in algae *** study showed that struvite treatment is viable for nutrient management of algae cultivation on sewage wastewaters which do not have suitable nutrient profiles.
