Oxidation stability of lubricating oil is critical for the smooth operation of industrial equipment such as *** formation is a major issue in turbine ***,the turbine oil industry employs antioxidants,especially,the combination of aminic and phenolic antioxidants,as the key additives to reduce sludge *** amines,primarily PANA,are considered as the most effective antioxidants in terms of oxidation induction time(OIT)measured by the RPVOT ***,PANA is also a sludge *** antioxidants are normally used in combination with the aminic *** is widely believed that there exists a synergistic effect between the phenolic and aminic *** the interaction mechanism between the two types of antioxidants,it is generally accepted that phenolics act as a hydrogen donor to help regenerate the consumed aminic *** mechanism can only explain some of the phenomena observed in field practice,but there are many other questions remaining unanswered including the antagonistic effect between PANA and *** this study,we used HPLC,FTIR and LC-MS to monitor the degradation products of the oil systems that were formulated with various aminic and phenolic *** the APANA alone system,we identified the formation of dimers and trimers of *** the PANA alone system,we identified the formation of dimers and *** dimers,trimers,and tetramers of PANA have very limited *** findings therefore help explain why PANA is a sludge *** oligomerizations(dimerization,trimerization,etc.)regenerate the N-H functionality,thus explaining why the PANA as well as other amines are very effective *** the PANA/phenolic system,the oligomers of PANA were greatly ***,we identified species that were formed by the recombination of the PANA radicals,or the PANA oligomeric radicals with the phenolic ***,to our knowledge,has not been reporte

Using the TEOST^(■) MHT-4 to Identify Robust Antioxidant Systems for Modern Engine Oils

A research tool has been developed that utilizes the Thermo-Oxidation Engine Oil Simulation Test (TEOST) MHT-4 to collect information on engine oil oxidation and deposit formation. The technique capitalizes on the traditional TEOST features as a deposit formation test, but also generates additional oxidation information by monitoring peak increase in the carbonyl region of the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrum (FT-IR) of TEOST used oils and volatiles. The data on overall oxidation and deposit formation is used to generate a "robustness" model for modern engine oil degradation. The tool is used to study low phosphorus Group Ⅱ passenger car engine oils formulated with different types of antioxidants and a molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoDTC). The model shows that improved oxidation and deposit control can be achieved by formulating with the molybdenum compound, and that the most effective stabilization system is composed of the organo-molybdenum compound,an alkylated diphenylamine (NDPA), and the hindered phenolic antioxidant 4,4′-methylenebis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) (MBDTBP).

Engine oil formulators face a number of challenges when developing modern passenger car motor *** recent years greater performance demands have been placed on engine oils to deliver superior oxidation and deposit control *** has occurred concurrently with the mandated reductions of phosphorus driven by concerns to protect engine catalyst *** has forced the use of lower levels of zinc dialkvldithiophosphate（ZDDP）in modem engine *** is known to be one of the most cost effective antioxidants *** in its use must be compensated for by the use of other phosphorus-free antioxidants.A challenge exists for the engine oil formulators to identify the most cost effective alternatives to ZDDP while at the same time utilizing inexpensive and rapid,yet meaningful bench test *** paper looks at the use of a bulk oil oxidation test（AlbOT）,pressurized differential scanning calorimetry（PDSC）,the Caterpillar Micro-Oxidation Test（CMOT）and the Thermo-Oxidation Engine Oil Simulation Test（TEOST-MHT）to evaluate and rank the robustness of passenger car engine oil performance for both oxidation protection and deposit control *** tests are utilized to screen a number of antioxidant systems in engine oils formulated with 500 ppm of phosphorus derived from *** antioxidant components are selected from a series of commonly used and commercially available materials plus some developmental *** components include a molybdenum compound,alkylated diphenylamines,hindered *** new developmental and experimental multi-functional *** performance of these fullyformulated engine oils are ranked in the selected bench tests in order to highlight the benefits of each antioxidant system under *** activity studies are carried out on a select group of tests in order to gain further insight as to how antioxidant chemical structure impacts oxidation and deposit control *** res
