Effects of meteorological conditions and topography on the bioaccumulation of PAHs and metal elements by native lichen(Xanthoria parietina)

The bioaccumulation of PAHs and metal elements in the indigenous lichens Xanthoria parietina was monitored during two years at a quarterly frequency,in 3 sites of contrasted anthropic influence.The impact of the meteorological factors(temperature,relative humidity,rainfall,wind speed)was first estimated through principal component analysis,and then by stepwise multilinear regressions to include wind directions.The pollutants levels reflected the proximity of atmospheric emissions,in particular from a large industrial harbor.High humidity and mild temperatures,and in a lower extent low wind speed and rainfall,also favored higher concentration levels.The contributions of these meteorological aspects became minor when including wind direction,especially when approaching major emission sources.The bioaccumulation integration time towards meteorological variations was on a seasonal basis(1–2 months)but the wind direction and thus local emissions also relied on a longer time scale(12 months).This showed that the contribution of meteorological conditions may be prevalent in remote places,while secondary in polluted areas,and should be definitely taken into account regarding long-term lichen biomonitoring and inter-annual comparisons.In the same time,a quadruple sampling in each site revealed a high homogeneity among supporting tree species and topography.The resulting uncertainty,including sampling,preparation and analysis was below 30%when comfortable analytical conditions were achieved.Finally,the occurrence of unexpected events such as a major forest fire,permitted to evaluate that this type of short,although intense,events did not have a strong influence on PAH and metals bioaccumulation by lichen.

The management of metastatic prostate cancer(mPCa)has changed over the past ten years.Several new drugs have been approved with significant overall survival benefits in metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer(PCa)including chemotherapy(docetaxel,cabazitaxel),new hormonal therapies(abiraterone,enzalutamide),Radium-223 and immunotherapy.The addition of docetaxel to androgen deprivation therapy(ADT)versus ADT alone in the castration sensitive metastatic setting has gained significant overall survival benefit particularly for high volume disease.More recently two phase III trials have assessed the efficacy of abiraterone plus prednisone plus ADT over ADT alone in newly high risk castrate sensitive mPCa.Determination of the appropriate treatment sequence using these therapies is important for maximizing the clinical benefit in castration sensitive and castration resistant PCa patients.Emerging fields are the identification of new subtypes with molecular characterization and new therapeutic targets.

In this paper, the authors prove an analogue of Gibbons' conjecture for the extended fourth order Allen-Cahn equation in R^N, as well as Liouville type results for some solutions converging to the same value at infinity in a given direction. The authors also prove a priori bounds and further one-dimensional symmetry and rigidity results for semilinear fourth order elliptic equations with more general nonlinearities.

Postoperative visual acuity can be limited by post-keratoplasty astigmatism,even with a clear corneal graft.Astigmatism management can be performed by selective suture removal,adjustment of sutures,optical correction,photorefractive procedures,wedge resection,intra-ocular lens implantation,intracorneal ring segments,relaxing incisions with or without compression sutures and repeated keratoplasty.Relaxing incisions can be made in the graft,graft-host interface or host cornea.Despite the unpredictability of the method because the flat and steep meridians are usually not orthogonal after penetrating keratoplasty,with asymmetric power distribution,all the studies showed an overall reduction of refractive,keratometric or topographic astigmatism,ranging from 30%to 72%with manual or femtosecond-assisted techniques.Most patients with astigmatism higher than 6 diopters had residual cylinder less than or equal to 3 diopters,which can be treated by laser excimer ablation or secondary intraocular lens implantation.

Dear Editor,Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)treatment is focused on two regimens.The polychemotherapy,FOLFIRINOX(folinic acid,fluorouracil,irinotecan,oxali-platin),is used in patients with good health conditions[1],while gemcitabine,as monotherapy,in patients with poor health conditions[2–4].Gemcitabine resistance-associated pathways have been targeted to sensitize cancer cells,but the results were disappointing.Using a transcrip-tomic bioinformatics analysis combined with biological validation,we showed that glucuronidation was associ-ated with the gemcitabine resistance in PDAC,and its inhibition could switch tumors from resistant to sensitive.

Malaria caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite is responsible for more than 240 million cases per year and killed 627,000 people in 2020,mostly African children.The malaria parasite is transmitted by mosquitos belonging to the genus Anopheles.After an asymptomatic liver stage,the parasite is released into the bloodstream to invade red blood cells(RBCs)and replicate asexually.This erythrocytic phase is associated with a variety of clinical manifestations,including mild and severe malaria.Cerebral malaria(CM)is one of the most severe forms,characterized by the sequestration of parasitized RBCs in the small capillaries of the brain and the local development of cytokine-mediated inflammation.Genetic variants in genes encoding proteins involved in red blood cell physiology are protective factors against severe malaria,as clearly demonstrated for the sickle cell variant of hemoglobin(HbS).

A new notion of bent sequence related to Hadamard matrices was introduced recently,motivated by a security application(Solé,et al.,2021).The authors study the self-dual class in length at most 196.The authors use three competing methods of generation:Exhaustion,Linear Algebra and Gr?bner bases.Regular Hadamard matrices and Bush-type Hadamard matrices provide many examples.The authors conjecture that if v is an even perfect square,a self-dual bent sequence of length v always exists.The authors introduce the strong automorphism group of Hadamard matrices,which acts on their associated self-dual bent sequences.The authors give an efficient algorithm to compute that group.

Gene therapy using small interfering RNA(siRNA)is emerging as a novel therapeutic approach to treat various diseases.However,safe and efficient siRNA delivery still constitutes the major obstacle for clinical implementation of siRNA therapeutics.Here we report an ionizable supramolecular dendrimer vector,formed via self-assembly of a small amphiphilic dendrimer,as an effective siRNA delivery system with a favorable safety profile.By virtue of the ionizable tertiary amine terminals,the supramolecular dendrimer has a low positively charged surface potential and no notable cytotoxicity at physiological pH.Nonetheless,this ionizable feature imparted sufficient surface charge to the supramolecular dendrimer to enable formation of a stable complex with siRNA via electrostatic interactions.The resulting siRNA/dendrimer delivery system had a surface charge that was neither neutral,thus avoiding aggregation,nor too high,thus avoiding cytotoxicity,but was sufficient for favorable cellular uptake and endosomal release of the siRNA.When tested in different cancer cell lines and patient-derived cancer organoids,this dendrimer-mediated siRNA delivery system effectively silenced the oncogenes Myc and Akt2 with a potent antiproliferative effect,outperforming the gold standard vector,Lipofectamine 2000.Therefore,this ionizable supramolecular dendrimer represents a promising vector for siRNA delivery.The concept of supramolecular dendrimer nanovectors via self-assembly is new,yet easy to implement in practice,offering a new perspective for supramolecular chemistry in biomedical applications.
