Modeling Soil Organic Carbon Storage and Its Dynamics in Croplands of China

Soil organic carbon （SOC） is one of the centre issues related to not only soil fertility but also environmental safety. Assessing SOC dynamics in croplands has been a challenge in China for long due to the lack of appropriate methodologies and data sources. As an alternative approach for studying SOC dynamics, process-based models are adopted to meet the needs. In this paper, a process-based model, DeNitrification-DeComposition （DNDC）, was applied to quantify the SOC storage and the spatial distribution in croplands of China in 2003, with the support of a newly compiled county-level soil/ climate/land use database. The simulated results showed that the total SOC storage in the top layer （0-30 cm） of the 1.18 × 10^8 ha croplands of China is 4.7-5.2 Pg C in 2003 with an average value of 4.95 Pg C. The SOC storage in the northeastern provinces （1.3 Pg C） accounts for about 1/4 of the whole national totals due to their dominantly fertile soils with high organic matter content. SOC density ranges from 3.9 to 4.4 kg C m 2, with an average of 4.2 kg C m^-2, a level is much lower than the world average level. The model results also indicated that high rates of SOC losses occurred in the croplands with the most common cropping patterns in China as like single soybean 〉 maize 〉 paddy 〉 cotton 〉 winter wheat and corn rotation. The results reported in this paper showed that there was still a great potential for improving SOC status in most croplands of China by adopting proper farming practices and land-use pattern. Therefore, long-term policy to protect SOC is urgently needed.

Pathogen Identification and Phylogenetic Analysis of Sugarcane Rust in Plateau Areas at Low Latitudes

[Objectives]This study was conducted to clarify the species,occurrence and distribution characteristics of sugarcane rust pathogens in low-latitude plateau sugarcane rust areas of Yunnan Province and the phylogenetic relationship between the pathogens and that between them and other rust fungi of the genus Puccinia.[Methods]Fifty seven sugarcane rust samples collected from the sugarcane areas of Baoshan,Lincang,Menghai,Menglian,Ximeng,Lancang and Wenshan in Yunnan were subjected to molecular identification.[Results]The four sugarcane rust samples from Haiyin1 hao in Menghai,Yunnan Province belonged to orange rust of sugarcane,and the pathogen was Puccinia kuehnii Butler.;and other 53 samples of sugarcane rust belonged to brown rust of sugarcane,and the pathogen was Puccinia melanocephala *** *** rDNA sequences of other rust fungi from the genus Puccinia were downloaded from GenBank and used for the construction of an NJ tree for systematic evolution analysis together with the sequences obtained in this *** results showed that the four *** sequences obtained in this study were clustered with Puccinia polysora(GenBank accession number:GU058024)into one group,and they were close genetically;the 53 *** sequences were clustered with ***(GenBank accession number:GU058002),***(GenBank accession number:AJ296545),Aecidium deutziae(GenBank accession number:KU309317)and ***(GenBank accession number:DQ354526)into one group,and they had a close genetic relationship;and the genetic relationship of the two species of sugarcane rust fungi identified in this study was relatively distant.[Conclusions]This study provides a scientific basis for sugarcane rust epidemic prediction,disease resistance breeding,and precise prevention and control.

Changes in Contents of N,P,K,pH and Organic Matter of Soil Experiencing Hydro-Fluctuation in Three Gorges Reservoir

Setting monitoring transect in the middle and shallow water area(altitude 156-172 m) in Three Gorges reservoir hydro-fluctuation belt to research the changing characteristics of the contents of N, P,K,pH and organic matter of the soil which experienced the influence of fluctuation the first time. The results showed that by the influence of water level fluctuating,contents of soil N,P,K,pH and organic matter had reduced in different soil layers in hydro-fluctuation *** available N decreased by 41.53%-59.87%,available P decreased by 5.26%- 36.76%,available K decreased by 3.55%-45.56%, total N decreased by 9.52%-40.00%,total P had no change generally,total K had decreased a little, content of organic material decreased by 7.62%- 37.83%%,pH value turned to neutral,changed by 1.73%-9.58%.

The aim of this study is to standardize the planting technology of sweet sorghums for forage,to prepare? technical specifications for planting sweet sorghums for forage. Based on years of experiment,it is prepared according to the requirements of GB/1. 1 Standardization Guide Rule Part I: Standard Structure and Compilation. The results show that it defines the application scope,basic requirements,preparation before sowing,planting requirements,field management,harvesting requirements of the technical specifications for planting sweet sorghums for forages,and determines the specific measures and technical indicators of the technical specifications. This paper provides technical support for the standardization,industrialization and marketization of planting sweet sorghums for forage.

Effects of Long-Term Combined Application of Organic and Mineral Fertilizers on Microbial Biomass,Soil Enzyme Activities and Soil Fertility

Soil health is important for the sustainable development of terrestrial ecosystem. In this paper, we studied the relationship between soil quality and soil microbial properties such as soil microbial biomass and soil enzyme activities in order to illustrate the function of soil microbial properties as bio-indicators of soil health. In this study, microbial biomass C and N contents （Cmic ＆ Nmic）, soil enzyme activities, and soil fertility with different fertilizer regimes were carried out based on a 15-year long-term fertilizer experiment in Drab Fluvo-aquic soil in Changping county, Beijing, China. At this site, 7 different treatments were established in 1991. They were in a wheat-maize rotation receiving either no fertilizer （CK）, mineral fertilizers （NPK）, mineral fertilizers with wheat straw incorporated （NPKW）, mineral fertilizers with incremental wheat straw incorporated （NPKW＋）, mineral fertilizers plus swine manure （NPKM）, mineral fertilizers plus incremental swine manure （NPKM＋） or mineral fertilizers with maize straw incorporated （NPKS）. In different fertilization treatments Cmic changed from 96.49 to 500.12 mg kg^-1, and Nmic changed from 35.89 to 101.82 mg kg^-1. Compared with CK, the other treatments increased Cmic ＆ Nmic, Cmic/Corg （organic C） ratios, Cmic/Nmic, urease activity, soil organic matter （SOM）, soil total nitrogen （STN）, and soil total phosphorus （STP）. All these properties in treatment with fertilizers input NPKM＋ were the highest. Meantime, long-term combined application of mineral fertilizers with organic manure or crop straw could significantly decrease the soil pH in Fluvo-aquic soil （the pH around 8.00 in this experimental soil）. Some of soil microbial properties （Cmic/Nmic, urease activity） were positively correlated with soil nutrients. Cmic/Nmic was significantly correlated with SOM and STN contents. The development of fluorescent probes enabling to distinguish Cys,Hcy and GSH has always been a considerable challenge,in particular the distinction of Hcy and other two biothiols,because Hcy has a very similar structure with Cys and a relatively lower concentration in living *** this work,a special o-dialdehyde fluorescent probe,quinoline-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde(QDA),has been synthesized and demonstrated superior performance in differentiating detection of Hcy and GSH,which is different from the previous reported o-dialdehyde probes specifically detecting ***,the probe can selectively distinguish Hcy and GSH from different signal channels in living cells and zebrafish,meaning it has great potential in biological *** finding will provide a novel idea for the design of fluorescent probes to distinguish biothiols.

Spread of invasive migratory pest Spodoptera frugiperda and management practices throughout China

Relationship between species diversity and tree size in natural forests around the Tropic of Cancer

Although numerous hypotheses have been proposed to explain the patterns of species diversity of forests at local and landscape levels,it is still difficult to predict the alpha diversity of species,especially in tropical and subtropical natural forests where trees of different sizes and shapes are highly *** might characterize species diversity,and the possible correlation between these variables may contribute to the development of easy-to-use growth indicators to predict diversity and to understand the status of trees within a *** this study,diameter classes were divided using the equal diameter class(EDC)and minimum measured diameter(MMD)methods,and five species diversity indices were calculated for each diameter class of 14 permanent plots in five national nature reserves surrounding the Tropic of Cancer(23.5°),southwest *** results show that species richness,abundance,and spatial diversity indices decreased in a typical inverted J-shape pattern with increasing diameter class and MMD,and could be easily modeled by a negative exponential *** ShannonWiener index showed a linear decrease while Pielou’s evenness index displayed a linear increase,with a small degree of *** results suggest that species diversity in subtropical forests is closely related to tree size,and the relationship is possibly independent of *** DBH of some trees in a stand could be informative regarding species diversity and contribute to the investigation and assessment of biodiversity.

Aiming at the basic and key technical problems in prevention and control of sugarcane white leaf disease(SCWL),this study systematically overcame key technical bottleneck of prevention and control of new SCWL after 10 years of collaborative research,and achieved several innovative *** phytoplasmas newly recorded in China and the new subgroup of SCWL phytoplasmas(16SrXI-D)were discovered for the first time in Yunnan,and the whole genome analysis of the epidemic subgroup was *** main transmission source of SCWL pathogens has been identified as infected seed canes,and Tettigoniella viridis and Clovia conifer were newly discovered as vectors for virus *** disease resistance of 25 main varieties was identified,and 10 control varieties were *** prevention and control strategy of"emphasizing early warning,strictly carrying out quarantine,blocking the vectors and controlling residual plants"was put forward,and a comprehensive prevention technique was established through integration of various techniques,and standardized technical regulations were formulated for demonstration *** promotion and application of these achievements have realized scientific prevention and control of SCWL,effectively curbed the spread of SCWL,and ensured the safety of sugarcane producing areas in China,achieving great economic,social and ecological benefits and providing technical support for high-quality development,loss reduction and efficiency improvement of China's sugar industry.
