While agricultural green development(AGD)is highly recognized and has become a national strategy in China,it is imperative to bridge the knowledge gaps between AGD and the UN Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),and to evaluate the contribution of AGD to meeting the SDGs.The first aim of this study was to compare the AGD goals and indicators with those of the SDGs so as to identify their relationship.The next aim was to examine the historical evolution of AGD indicators and analyze the gaps between the current status of various indicators and their benchmarks.Limiting factors were identified in China's transition toward AGD.These findings reveal that the indicators of AGD align with those of the SDGs,but have greater specificity to the context in China and are more quantifiable.There has been a significant increase per capita calorie and protein intakes in China,as well as a notable rise in agricultural output per unit of arable land and rural incomes from 1980 to the 2010s.However,these achievements have been accompanied by a high resource use and environmental pollution,highlighting the need for a more sustainable,environmentally responsible agriculture in China.

Automatic guidance of agricultural vehicles requires automatic execution of operation commands received from the navigation controller by using electronically controlled mechanisms for wheel steering,speed changing and work implementing.Automatic steering contributes as a prerequisite technique in automatic and semi-automatic agricultural navigation.This research aimed to develop an electric automatic steering system that was compact in its structure and integrated into original steering mechanism in a simply and convenient way for aftermarket modification.A brushless motor and reducer assembly was utilized to provide an adequate steering torque instead of manual maneuver.A rapid assembling approach was proposed by passing the steering shaft through the hollow output shaft.A digital proportional-integral-differential(PID)algorithm was implemented to calculate the rotation speeds and directions by comparing the desired angle and the actual angle,which was implemented in a printed circuit board with a microcontroller unit(MCU)and interface chips.An unmanned wheeled tractor was applied as test platform to integrate the newly developed electric automatic steering system.Tests were conducted to evaluate its performance in terms of stability and responsiveness.An autonomous navigation system guided the tractor along target paths in the field by sending steering commands to the electric automatic steering system.The results show that the steering angle error was less than 0.81°when desired steering angle was less than 10°.The lateral error difference was no more than 4.76 cm when repeating following the same target path,which indicated that the electric automatic steering system responded accurately and robustly to steering commands.

Autophagy receptor ZmNBR1 promotes the autophagic degradation of ZmBRI1a and enhances drought tolerance in maize

Drought stress is a crucial environmental factor that limits plant growth, development, and productivity.Autophagy of misfolded proteins can help alleviate the damage caused in plants experiencing drought.However, the mechanism of autophagy-mediated drought tolerance in plants remains largely unknown.Here, we cloned the gene for a maize(Zea mays)selective autophagy receptor, NEXT TO BRCA1GENE 1(ZmNBR1), and identified its role in the response to drought stress. We observed that drought stress increased the accumulation of autophagosomes. RNA sequencing and reverse transcriptionquantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that ZmNBR1 is markedly induced by drought stress. ZmNBR1 overexpression enhanced drought tolerance, while its knockdown reduced drought tolerance in maize. Our results established that ZmNBR1 mediates the increase in autophagosomes and autophagic activity under drought stress.ZmNBR1 also affects the expression of genes related to autophagy under drought stress. Moreover, we determined that BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE1A(ZmBRI1a), a brassinosteroid receptor of the BRI1-like family, interacts with ZmNBR1. Phenotype analysis showed that ZmBRI1a negatively regulates drought tolerance in maize, and genetic analysis indicated that ZmNBR1 acts upstream of ZmBRI1a in regulating drought tolerance. Furthermore, ZmNBR1facilitates the autophagic degradation of ZmBRI1a under drought stress. Taken together, our results reveal that ZmNBR1 regulates the expression of autophagy-related genes, thereby increasing autophagic activity and promoting the autophagic degradation of ZmBRI1a under drought stress, thus enhancing drought tolerance in maize. These findings provide new insights into the autophagy degradation of brassinosteroid signaling components by the autophagy receptor NBR1 under drought stress.

Toxic arsenic(As)and trace element selenium(Se)are transformed by microorganisms but their complex interactions in soil-plant systems have not been fully understood.An Asand Se-oxidizing bacterium,Agrobacterium sp.T3F4,was applied to a native seleniferous As-polluted soil to investigate As/Se uptake by the vegetable Brassica rapa L.and As-Se interaction as mediated by strain T3F4.The Se content in the aboveground plants was significantly enhanced by 34.1%,but the As content was significantly decreased by 20.5% in the T3F4-inoculated pot culture compared to the control(P<0.05).Similar result was shown in treatment with additional 5 mg/kg of Se(IV)in soil.In addition,the As contents in roots were significantly decreased by more than 35% under T3F4 or Se(IV)treatments(P<0.05).Analysis of As-Se-bacterium interaction in a soil simulation experiment showed that the bioavailability of Se significantly increased and As was immobilized with the addition of the T3F4strain(P<0.05).Furthermore,an As/Se co-exposure hydroponic experiment demonstrated that As uptake and accumulation in plants was reduced by increasing Se(IV)concentrations.The 50% growth inhibition concentration(IC50)values for As in plants were increased about one-fold and two-fold under co-exposure with 5 and 10μmol/L Se(IV),respectively.In conclusion,strain T3F4 improves Se uptake but decreases As uptake by plants via oxidation of As and Se,resulting in decrease of soil As bioavailability and As/Se competitive absorption by plants.This provides a potential bioremediation strategy for Se biofortification and As immobilization in As-polluted soil.

agricultural plastics play a pivotal role in agricultural production.However,due to expensive costs,agricultural plastic waste management(APWM)encounters a vast funding gap.As one of the crucial stakeholders,the public deserves to make appropriate efforts for APWM.Accordingly,identifying whether the public is willing to pay for APWM and clarifying the decisions’driving pathways to explore initiatives for promoting their payment intentions are essential to address the dilemma confronting APWM.To this end,by applying the extended theory of planned behavior(TPB),the study conducted an empirical analysis based on 1,288 residents from four provinces(autonomous regions)of northern China.Results illustrate that:1)respondents hold generally positive and relatively strong payment willingness towards APWM;2)respondents’attitude(AT),subjective norm(SN),and perceived behavioral control(PBC)are positively correlated with their payment intentions(INT);3)environmental cognition(EC)and environmental emotion(EE)positively moderate the relationships between AT and INT,and between SN and INT,posing significant indirect impacts on INT.The study’s implications extend to informing government policies,suggesting that multi-entity cooperation,specifically public payment for APWM,can enhance agricultural non-point waste management.

Balancing ecological preservation with sustainable agricultural practices is a global issue. Erhai Lake has felt this challenge keenly. To address it, in 2022, a Science and Technology Backyards(STBs) project was launched in Gusheng Village. The goal of this is to care for the environment while ensuring that farms and farmers can thrive sustainably. The uniqueness of the Erhai STB arises from its interdisciplinary integration, encompassing fields such as ecology, agronomy and social science, resulting in specifically-designed solutions for the Erhai context. While this model aligns with broader STB paradigms, its distinctive edge lies in technological innovation and robust support mechanisms for local agricultural stakeholders. This paper describes the methodology and outcomes of the STB initiative, highlighting its pivotal role in spearheading sustainable transition in Erhai. Preliminary findings underscore the potential of the STB model as an efficacious tool for harmonizing environmental conservation and agricultural practices, that are both financially and environmentally sustainable, rendering it a potential model for comparable regions in China and other counties.

Detecting genes that affect specific traits(such as human diseases and crop yields)is important for treating complex diseases and improving crop quality.A genome-wide association study(GWAS)provides new insights and directions for understanding complex traits by identifying important single nucleotide polymorphisms.Many GWAS summary statistics data related to various complex traits have been gathered recently.Studies have shown that GWAS risk loci and expression quantitative trait loci(e QTLs)often have a lot of overlaps,which makes gene expression gradually become an important intermediary to reveal the regulatory role of GWAS.In this review,we review three types of gene-trait association detection methods of integrating GWAS summary statistics and e QTLs data,namely colocalization methods,transcriptome-wide association study-oriented approaches,and Mendelian randomization-related methods.At the theoretical level,we discussed the differences,relationships,advantages,and disadvantages of various algorithms in the three kinds of gene-trait association detection methods.To further discuss the performance of various methods,we summarize the significant gene sets that influence highdensity lipoprotein,low-density lipoprotein,total cholesterol,and triglyceride reported in 16 studies.We discuss the performance of various algorithms using the datasets of the four lipid traits.The advantages and limitations of various algorithms are analyzed based on experimental results,and we suggest directions for follow-up studies on detecting gene-trait associations.

The garden pea(Pisum sativum L.)is a significant cool-season legume,serving as crucial food sources,animal feed,and industrial raw materials.The advancement of functional genomics over the past two decades has provided substantial theoretical foundations and progress to pea breeding.Notably,the release of the pea reference genome has enhanced our understanding of plant architecture,symbiotic nitrogen fixation(SNF),flowering time,floral organ development,seed development,and stress resistance.However,a considerable gap remains between pea functional genomics and molecular breeding.This review summarizes the current advancements in pea functional genomics and breeding while highlighting the future challenges in pea molecular breeding.

Although China has achieved great advancements toward national food security,the country is still confronted with a range of challenges,including natural resource stress,imbalanced diets and environmental pollution.Optimized management of crop–livestock systems is the key measure to realize agricultural green transformation.However,optimized management of crop–livestock systems that use multi-objective zoning is lacking.This study employed a multi-objective zoning management approach to comprehensively analyze four indicators:ammonia volatilization,nitrogen surplus,soil carrying capacity and ecological red line area.With its significant ecological integrity and a strong emphasis on sustainability,the Baiyangdian Basin serves as a unique and suitable test case for conducting analyses on multi-objective nutrient optimization management,with the aim to facilitate the agricultural green transformation.This study finds that less than 8%of the area in the Baiyangdian Basin meet the acceptable environmental indicator standard,whereas around 50%of the area that had both nitrogen surplus and ammonia volatilization exceeded the threshold.Implementation of unified management,that is,the same management technique across the study areas,could result in an increase of areas meeting environmental indicator thresholds to 21.1%.This project developed a novel multi-indicator partition optimization method,in which distinct measures are tailored for different areas to satisfy multiple environmental indicators.Implementation of this method,could potentially bring more than 50%area below the threshold,and areas with ammonia emissions and nitrogen surplus could be reduced to 15.8%.The multi-indicators partition optimization method represents a more advanced and efficiency-oriented management approach when compared to unified management.This approach could be regarded as the best available option to help China achieve agricultural transformation to improve efficient production and reduce environmental pollution.It is recommended that cu

Nutrition impacts of non-solid cooking fuel adoption on under-five children in developing countries

This paper examines the nutrition impacts of using non-solid cooking fuel on under-five children in developing countries.We draw on data from more than 1.12 million children in 62 developing countries from the Demographic and Health Surveys(DHS).Results from both fixed effects(FE)and instrumental variable(IV)estimates show that using non-solid cooking fuel significantly improves the nutrition outcomes of under-five children.Compared with their peers from households mainly using solid fuel,children from households mainly using non-solid fuel exhibit a lower probability of experiencing stunting(by 5.9 percentage points)and being underweight(by 1.2 percentage points).Our further investigation provides evidence for several underlying mechanisms,such as improved indoor air quality,induced reduction in children’s respiratory symptoms,benefits on maternal health,and reduction in maternal time spent on fuel collection or cooking.Heterogenous analyses suggest that the nutrition benefits of using non-solid cooking fuel are more prominent among boys,children above three years old,and those from households of lower socioeconomic status,rural areas,and Southeast Asia.
