A rigorous real-time acoustic positioning method for ocean bottom seismic exploration

The conventional technique for positioning seafloor geophones in ocean bottom seismic exploration encounters several challenges,including the significant impact of outliers on positioning results,underutilization of high-precision observations,and low efficiency in real-time data *** issues inevitably affect the quality of seismic exploration *** address these challenges and enhance the accuracy of geophone positioning,this paper proposes a rigorous real-time acoustic positioning method for geophones based on sequential adjustment and Baarda's outlier detection *** proposed method comprises three key steps:grouping the original acoustic observations,constructing the intra-group acoustic positioning model,and synthesizing the positioning results across the different *** validity and practicality of this approach are confirmed through a simulation experiment as well as the field experiment conducted in the Bohai sea,*** results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively eliminates outliers in the original observations and maximizes the utilization of high-quality *** to traditional acoustic positioning methods,it significantly reduces positioning errors from meters to decimeters,and in some cases can achieve centimeter-level *** the sound velocity profile in the operating sea area is measured,the method can attain the posterior standard deviation at the millimeter level and positioning errors within 10 *** the sound velocity profile is unknown,the method can achieve the posterior standard deviation at centimeter-level and positioning errors of approximately 20 cm.

Multi-scale variability of the tropical Indian Ocean circulation system revealed by recent observations

The tropical Indian Ocean circulation system includes the equatorial and near-equatorial circulations, the marginal sea circulation, and eddies. The dynamic processes of these circulation systems show significant multi-scale variability associated with the Indian Monsoon and the Indian Ocean dipole. This paper summarizes the research progress over recent years on the tropical Indian Ocean circulation system based on the large-scale hydrological observations and numerical simulations by the South China sea Institute of Oceanology(SCSIO), Chinese Academy of sciences. Results show that:(1) the wind-driven Kelvin and Rossby waves and eastern boundary-reflected Rossby waves regulate the formation and evolution of the Equatorial Undercurrent and the Equatorial Intermediate Current;(2) the equatorial wind-driven dynamics are the main factor controlling the inter-annual variability of the thermocline in the eastern Indian Ocean upwelling;(3) the equatorial waves transport large amounts of energy into the Bay of Bengal in forms of coastal Kelvin and reflected free Rossby waves. Several unresolved issues within the tropical Indian Ocean are discussed:(i) the potential effects of the momentum balance and the basin resonance on the variability of the equatorial circulation system, and(ii) the potential contribution of wind-driven dynamics to the life cycle of the eastern Indian Ocean upwelling. This paper also briefly introduces the international Indian Ocean investigation project of the SCSIO, which will advance the study of the multi-scale variability of the tropical Indian Ocean circulation system, and provide a theoretical and data basis to support marine environmental security for the countries around the Maritime Silk Road.

Radiolarian biostratigraphy in the Southern Bering sea since Pliocene

Detailed radiolarian biostratigraphy in the Plio-Pleistocene was analyzed by using samples from IODP Site U1340 that was drilled to a core depth of 604 m in the southern Bering sea.A total of 227 species belonging to 102 genera were *** on the distributions of the radiolarian index species at Site U1340,five radiolarian zones since the Pliocene were established in the southern Bering sea for the first time,and 25 radiolarian bioevents were *** ages were estimated on the basis of the age-depth plot that was constructed by the synthetical datum of the effective biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic *** radiolarian zones at Site U1340 were systematically compared with those in its adjacent regions since the late Early Pliocene,which further improved and interpreted the biostratigraphic datum as well as their correlations in the middle-high latitude of the North *** addition,the comparative results of radiolarian zones show that Botryostrobus aquilonaris Zone emended in this paper is equivalent to the upper part of the same zone defined by Hays,1970,and Druppatractus irregularis-Dorydruppa bensoni Zone as well as Spongodiscus ***,newly proposed in this paper,are well correlated with Cycladophora sakaii Zone and Stylatractus universus Zone in the subarctic North Pacific,respectively.

Evolution and propagation of a mesoscale eddy in the northern South China sea during winter

In situ observations, satellite data, and the output from an eddy-resolving ocean circulation model were used to study the generations and propagations of an anticyclonic eddy in the northern South China sea （NSCS） during the winter of 2009-2010. In the NSCS, the anticyclonic eddy firstly appeared to the west of the Luzon Strait, migrated generally along the continental slope and dissipated around the Xisha Archipela- go. The evolution of the warm eddy contains three phases： development, maturation, and decay. The eddy mainly stayed near 119.7°E in December and then gradually moved to 118.7°E until January 15, when its intensity, as indicated by the thermocline temperature and salinity anomalies, increased significantly, re- flecting the growth of the eddy. The eddy reached its peak on January 15 and persisted until February 23. During this period, the eddy propagated westward to 116.4°E. After, the warm eddy weakened significantly and dissipated finally near the Xisha Archipelago.

ROLE OF EQUATORIAL PACIFIC OCEAN SUBSURFACE OCEANIC TEMPERATURE MODE IN ENSO CYCLE

Based on the simple ocean data assimilation(SODA) reanalysis dataset from the University of Maryland and the method of Empirical Orthogonal Functions(EOF),the characteristics of interannual and interdecadal variabilities of the equatorial Pacific subsurface oceanic temperature anomaly(SOTA) are *** first and second modes of the equatorial Pacific SOTA in the interannual and interdecadal variations are found respectively and the effect of the second mode on the ENSO cycle is *** show that the first mode of SOTA's interannual and interdecadal variabilities exhibit a dipole pattern,indicating that the warm and cold temperature anomalies appear simultaneously in the equatorial subsurface *** second mode shows coherent large-scale temperature anomalies in the equatorial subsurface Pacific,which is a dominant mode in the evolution of ENSO *** temporal series of the second mode has a significant lead correlation with the Ni?o-3.4 index,which can make a precursory prediction signal for *** function of this prediction factor in SOTA is verified by composite and case analyses.

Factor analysis of recent major heatwaves in East Asia

Heatwaves(HWs)present a major hazard to our society and more extreme heatwaves are expected with future climatic ***,it is important to improve our understanding of the underlying processes that drive HWs,in order to boost our socioeconomic-ecological *** this study,we quantified the influences of key driving factors(large-scale atmospheric circulation,soil moisture,and sea surface temperature)and their synergies on recent heatwaves in East *** conducted a factor separation analysis for three recent HW events by constraining the key factors in the regional Weather Research and Forecasting model with their climatologies or pseudo-observations in different *** study showed distinct spatial variations in the HW-controlling factors in East *** synergistic interaction of large-scale circulation and soil moisture was the most important factors in the 2013 Chinese *** the 2018 HWs in Korea and Japan,the same stagnant large-scale atmospheric circulation played a dominant role in driving the HW *** land-atmosphere coupling via soil moisture,its interaction with circulation,and SST exhibited stronger influences during the Korean HW than the Japanese *** analysis also revealed temporal variations in the factors driving Korean and Chinese HWs due to typhoon passage and other multiple processes over heterogeneous surfaces(i.e.,topographically induced Foehn winds,large-scale warm advection from the warm ocean,spatial differences in soil moisture).Our findings suggest that future heatwave-related studies should consider interactive contributions of key factors,their interplay with surface heterogeneities of complex terrain.

The basement of the South China sea（SCS）and adjacent areas can be divided into six divisions（regions）-Paleozoic Erathem graben-faulted basement division in Beibu Gulf,Paleozoic Erathem strike-slip pull-apart in Yinggehai waters,Paleozoic Erathem faulted-depression in eastern Hainan,Paleozoic Erathem rifted in northern Xisha（Paracel）,Paleozoic Erathem strike-slip extending in southern Xisha,and Paleozoic-Mesozoic Erathem extending in Nansha Islands（Spratly）*** Pre-Cenozoic basement in the SCS and Yunkai continental area are coeval within the Tethyan tectonic domain in the Pre-Cenozoic *** are formed on the background of the Paleo-Tethyan tectonic domain,and are important components of the Eastern Tethyan multi-island-ocean *** branches of the Eastern Paleo-Tethys tectonic domain,North Yunkai,North Hainan,and South Hainan sea basins,have evolved into the North Yunkai,North Hainan,and South Hainan suture zones, *** shows a distinctive feature of localization for the Pre-Cenozoic *** Qiongnan（*** Hainan）Suture Zone on the northern margin of the South China sea can be considered the vestige of the principal ocean basin of Paleo-Tethys,and connected with the suture zone of the Longmucuo-Shuanghu belt-Bitu belt-Changning-Menglian-Bentong-Raub belt,the south extension of Bitu-Changning-Menglian-Ching Mai belt-Chanthaburi-Raub-Bentong belt on the west of South China sea,and with the Lianhua-Taidong suture zone（a fault along the east side of Longitudinal Valley in Taiwan）-Hida LP/HT（low pressure-high temperature）metamorphic belt-Hida -marginal HP/LT metamorphic belt in southwestern Honshu of Japan,on the east of the South China *** Qiongbei（North Hainan）suture zone may eastwards extended along the Wangwu-Wenjiao fault zone,and connects with the Lufeng-Dapu-Zhenghe-Shangyu（Lianhuashan）deep fault zone through the Pearl River Mouth *** Meso-Tethys developed on the south of the South China *** Nansha Trough may be

Blasting and shaped charges are the main forms of underwater weapons,and their near-field underwater explosions(UNDEX)can severely damage ***,it is of great importance to study underwater explosive load characteristics of different forms of *** full physical process of a typical underwater explosion of a sphere/column blasting charge and a shaped charge was simulated using the Eulerian *** loading characteristics of the underwater blast shock wave and bubble,as well as the projectile,were *** results show that the shock wave loads of spherical,cylindrical,and polygonal charges propagate outward in spherical,ellipsoidal–spherical and ellipsoidal–spherical wavefronts,*** the shock wave reaches 16 times the distance-to-diameter ratio,its surface is approximately *** addition,in the shaped charge underwater explosion,the shaped charge liner cover absorbs 30°–90°of the shock wave energy and some of the bubble energy to form a high-speed shaped ***,ellipsoidal,and ellipsoidal bubbles are generated by underwater explosions of spherical,cylindrical,and shaped charges,*** obtained results provide a reference for evaluating the power of underwater weapons.

Relationship between phytoplankton composition and environmental factors in the surface waters of southern South China sea in early summer of 2009

Horizontal distributions of phytoplankton abundance,species composition as well as environmental factors were investigated in the surface waters of southern South China sea (SCS) in early summer (May 16 to June 7) of *** most areas of southern SCS,the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus were very low and DIN/DIP ratios usually were lower than the Redfield N/P Ratio of 16∶*** nutrients were significant lower in the upwelling region off Vietnam.A total of 144 taxa of phytoplankton were identified in the study *** dominant genera were Prorocentrum,Gonyaulax,Gyrodinium,Scrippsiella and Chaetoceros,*** patterns of early-summer phytoplankton abundance and species composition should be mainly controlled by the upwelling off Vietnam and the discharge of Mekong River in the southern *** dominated in the nutritious Mekong River Estuary or upwelling region off Vietnam; while dinoflagellates dominated in the oligotrophic pelagic *** canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicates that most of diatoms favor higher levels of silicate and phosphorus,as well as lower temperature; while most of dinoflagellates favor the lower silicate and phosphorous and higher *** and CCA results indicate that silicate,nitrate and temperature were the most relevant environmental factors to regulate the horizontal pattern of early-summer phytoplankton in the surface waters of southern SCS.

Picoplankton and virioplankton abundance and community structure in Pearl River Estuary and Daya Bay, South China

By using flow cytometry techniques, we investigated the abundance and composition of the heterotrophic prokaryotes, virioplankton and picophytoplankton community in the Pearl River Estuary and Daya Bay in the summer of 2012. We identified two subgroups of prokaryotes, high nucleic acid（HNA） and low nucleic acid（LNA）, characterized by different nucleic acid contents. HNA abundance was significantly correlated with larger phytoplankton and Synechococcus（Syn） abundance, which suggested the important role of organic substrates released from primary producers on bacterial growth. Although LNA did not show any association with environmental variables, it was a vital component of the microbial community. In contrast to previous studies, the total virioplankton concentration had a poor relationship with nutrient availability. The positive relationship between large-sized phytoplankton abundance and the V-I population confirmed that V-I was a phytoplankton-infecting viral subgroup. Although the V-II group（bacteriophages）was dominant in the virioplankton community, it was not related with prokaryotic abundance, which indicated factors other than hosts controlling V-II abundance or the uncertainty of virus-host coupling. With respect to the picophytoplankton community,our results implied that river input exerted a strong limitation to Syn distribution in the estuary, while picoeukaryotes（Euk） were numerically less abundant and showed a quite different distribution pattern from that of Syn, and hence presented ecological properties distinct from Syn in our two studied areas.
