Light,as both energy source and informational signal,profoundlyinfluences plant growth and development during the whole lifespan from seed germination to *** senses lightthrough multiple photoreceptors including the blue/UV-A photo-receptors cryptochromes （CRY,CRY1/2） and phototropins（PHOT,PHOT1/2）,the red/far-red photoreceptors phytochromes（PHY,phyA-E）,and the UV-B photoreceptor *** Arabidop-sis,both CRY and PHY are involved in mediating light regulationof hypocotyl elongation,cotyledon/leaf expansion,anthocyaninaccumulation,flowering,stomatal development,and light entrainment of the circadian clock.

Most crops were first domesticated about 13 000 to 11 000 years ago. Humans are dependent on crops for survival, and from the beginnings of agriculture have been energetically involved in developing crops that better serve their needs （Allard 1999）. During the last decades breeding has contributed approximately a 50% contribution to increasing the world＇s food crop production. However, plant breeding only began to adopt a scientific approach in the 1900s, when Mendel＇s hybridization experiment was rediscovered. Mendelian genetics and the development of the statistical concepts of randomJzatJon and replication had considerable impact on plant breeding methods （Hallauer et al. 1988）. In spite of the fact that scientific crop breeding has only existed for one century, it is a discipline that is developing very quickly. The major objective of crop breeding programs is to develop new genotypes that are genetically superior to those currently available for specific environments. To achieve this objective, breeders employ a range of selection methods and technologies （Hallauer et al. 1988; Falconer and Mackay 1996; Allard 1999）.

Diapause hormone (DH) is a neurohormone which is secreted from suboesophageal ganglion and responsible for induction of embryonic diapause in many insects. Using rapid amplification of the cDNA ends (RACE) method, the cDNA encoding diapause hormone in Helicoverpa armigera, a main kind of crops pest was cloned. The nucleotide sequence reveals that the mRNA encodes an open reading frame and the 25-aa DH peptide is localized at N-terminal region just after the signal peptide. A homology search showed that H. armigera DH has high homology with the diapause hormone of Bornbyx mori and Helicoverpa zea; and it also belongs to the FXPRL neuropeptide family. Thus, H. armigera DH seems to be a new type of diapause hormone molecule.

A now sesquiterpenoid named as celastrine was isolated from the seed oil of Celastrus flagellaris Rupr. Its structure was determined as 1 alpha ,6 beta ,8 alpha ,13-tetraacetoxy-9 alpha -benzoyloxy-beta -dihydroagarofuran by UV, IR, MS and NMR(H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, H-1-H-1 COSY, H-1-C-13 COSY, NOESY and HMBC) spectra.

Let DerA be the Lie algebra of derivations of the d-torus A = C[t1± 1, . . . , td±1]. By applying Shen-Larsson’s functors we get a class of indecomposable DerA-modules from finite-dimensional indecomposable gld-modules. We also give a complete description of the submodules of these indecomposable DerA-modules. Our results generalize those obtained by Rao.

Effects of ultradry storage on fluidity of plasma membrane of seed

The effects of ultradry seed storage on the fluidity of plasma membrane have been investigated using the DPH fluorescent probe (1,6-diphenyi-1, 3, 5,-hexatriene). The results demonstrated that the micro-viscosity of plasma membrane of ultradried seeds has no significant changes compared with the seeds which were stored under -20℃ condition. However, there is a little adverse effect on the seeds with extreme dehydration. The results were consistent with higher vigor level of ultradried seed. It indicated that ultradry seed storage could maintain the physiological function of seed, protect the integrity of the membrane and improve the storability of seed. Furthermore, the results also revealed that sugar has the effect on protecting membrane structure and preserving the fluidity of the plasma membrane under seed dehydration. In the meantime, some mechanism about ultradry seed storage and the tolerance of dehydration of seed have been discussed.
