A causation mechanism for coal bursts during roadway development based on the major horizontal stress in coal:Very specific structural geology causing a localised loss of effective coal confinement and Newton’s second law

In 2017,one of the international authorities on coal bursts,Mark Christopher,published a paper entitled"Coal bursts that occur during development:A rock mechanics enigma",in which several relevant technical issues were *** paper outlines what is considered to be a credible,first-principles,mechanistic explanation for these three current development coal burst conundrums by reference to early published coal testing work examining the significance of a lack of"constraint"to coal stability and an understanding of how very specific structural geology and other geological features can logically cause this to occur in situ,albeit on a statistically very rare *** basic model is examined by reference to published information pertaining to the development coal-burst that occurred at the Austar Coal Mine in New South Wales,australia,in 2014 and from the Sunnyside District in Utah,the United ***"cause and effect"model for development of coal bursts presented also offers a meaningful explanation for the statistical improbability for what are nonetheless potentially highly-destructive events,being able to explain the statistical rarity being just as important to the credibility of the model as explaining the local conditions associated with burst *** model could also form the basis for a robust,riskbased approach utilising a"hierarchy of controls",to the operational management of the development coal burst ***,the use of pre-mining predictions for likely burst-prone and non-burstprone areas,the use of the mine layout to avoid or at least minimise mining within burst-prone areas if appropriate,and finally the development of an operational Trigger Action Response Plan(TARP)that reduces the likelihood of inadvertent roadway development into a burst-prone area without suitable safety controls already being in place.

Mechanical behaviours of bedded sandstone under hydromechanical coupling

The combination of the dipping effect and hydromechanical(H-M)coupling effect can easily lead to water inrush disasters in water-rich roadways with different dip angles in coal ***,H-M coupling tests of bedded sandstones under identical osmotic pressure and various confining pressures were ***,the evolution curves of stress-strain,permeability and damage,macro-and mesoscopic failure characteristics were ***,the mechanical behaviour was characterized,and finally the failure mechanism was *** results showed that:(1)The failure of the sandstone with the bedding angle of 45°or 60°was the structure-dominant type,while that with the bedding angle of 0°,30°or 90°was the force-dominant type.(2)When the bedding angle was in the range of(0°,30°)or(45°,90°),the confining pressure played a dominant role in influencing the peak ***,withinβ∈(30°,45°),the bedding effect played a dominant role in the peak strength.(3)With the increase in bedding angle,the cohesion increased first,then decreased and finally increased,while the internal friction angle was the opposite.(4)When the bedding angle was 0°or 30°,the“water wedging”effect and the“bedding buckling”effect would lead to the forking or converging shear *** the bedding angle was 45°or 60°,the sliding friction effect would lead to the shear slipping *** the bedding angle was 90°,the combination of the“bedding buckling”effect and shear effect would lead to the mixed tension-shear *** above conclusions obtained are helpful for the prevention of water inrush disasters in water-rich roadways with different dips in coal mines.

In relation to the Shifu Road Station project on Line 4 of the Shenyang Metro in China,a small-pipe roof-beam method for constructing subway stations is ***,a numerical simulation was performed to optimize the supporting parameters of the proposed method and determine the design ***,the deformation of the pipe roof and surface settlement during the construction process were ***,the surface settlement attributed to the excavation was studied through field monitoring,and the proposed method was compared with other *** results show that an increase in the pipe-roof spacing has little effect on the surface settlement and piperoof *** bearing capacity of the pipe roof can be efficiently utilized once the flexural stiffness reaches 2EI,and the flexural stiffness is not the dominant factor controlling the *** essential stages in controlling surface settlement are the excavations of the transverse pilot tunnels and the soil between *** final settlement value of the ground was 24.1 mm,resulting in a reduction in the construction period by at least five months while satisfying the control requirements.

Utilising the scientific method to demonstrate that slender beam/column behaviour is the dominant behavioural mechanism leading to roof/rib failure

As per most other earth science engineering problems,the underground coal geotechnical environment and the way in which roof and rib support interacts with the rock mass are complex *** is therefore generally recognised that without prudent simplification,the complexity of the problem will overwhelm all current geotechnical methods of modelling,not least for the reason that a rock mass can never be characterised to a level that allows a"non-simplified"*** fact that numerical models,which are commonly purported to be a"simulation"tool and the so-called epitome of advanced geotechnical engineering,always need to be"calibrated"to a known reality is taken to be conclusive proof of this *** the problem should not be oversimplified(*** dominant failure mechanisms or critical data input parameters should not be ignored),without question judicious simplification is at the heart of all engineering design,to the point that it has a well-established name–"reductionism".The hypothesis addressed in this paper,is that horizontal and vertical stress-driven slender beam and column behaviour(which includes unstable Euler Buckling)are respectively the dominant(but not only)roadway roof and ribline behavioural mechanism that(if not controlled)can lead to excessive deformation,failure and eventual *** a part of the Scientific Method,a hypothesis can only be tested via real-world observations,measurements and analyses in establishing it is a credible *** the Scientific Method,this paper demonstrates that slender beam/column behaviour is the dominant instability mechanism within a coal mine roof/rib subject to elevated horizontal/vertical stress conditions and therefore,must be representatively accounted for in any credible empirical,analytical,or numerical approach to coal mine roof/rib stability assessment and associated ground support design.

The working principles of the measurement apparatus developed based on capacitive grating technology are introduced in this *** grating technology is a precision length measurement *** advantages are small vol- ume,low price,low production cost,and easy to obtain precise readings of the measured *** measurement apparatus is composed of one industrial control computer,two microcontrollers and corresponding *** sys- tem stability is guaranteed during the design of the circuit with the practical situation of its industry application taken into *** software is divided into lower layer and upper *** layer has different *** cau- ses of system errors and the method of error elimination are also *** analysis of the data obtained from ex- periments and the operating results of prototype apparatus both indicate that the proposed measurement apparatus has achieved outstanding competitive technical level of same kind products in international market and thus has ideal im- plications for mass production.

Three-dimensional trajectory parameter measurement of industrial products is the key technical criteria that drives the product *** has recently become one of the hotspots in the measurement *** paper presents a method for measuring the eyeglass frame parameters using the inner trajectory as measurement *** three-dimensional parameters can be measured and calculated from top view and front *** preprocessing is performed to ensure the reliability of data *** necessary derivation and explanation for formulas of important parameters are provided.A standard square board is used as the template and is measured multi-times to verify the measurement *** experimental data are processed and the type A uncertainty is calculated,which concludes that the measurement results are convincible and comply with the product standard,and the proposed method is correct and the design requirements are met.
