In the Third Pole (TP) region, there are about 100,000 km2of glaciers [1], distributed mainly in the Tibetan Plateau and its surroundings. Glacier melt-water from these glaciers not only feeds rivers, such as the Indus, Brahmaputra, Ganges, Yellow and Yangtze, which finally reach the seas, but also feeds the rivers, such as the Tarim River, Heihe River and a lot of other rivers, which finally reach the arid areas or deserts. The Asian Water Tower [2]is, therefore, proposed to characterize the significance of the glaciers and glacier melt water at all the river heads in the TP, which is important water resource both for regulating seasonal water demands in the arid areas or deserts and for sea level rising. In addition, they also change the water cycle at a large scale [3].

Modality is a source or form of information. Through various modal information, humans can perceive the world from multiple perspectives. Simultaneously, the observation of remote sensing(RS) is multimodal. We observe the world macroscopically through panchromatic, Lidar, and other modal sensors.Multimodal observation of remote sensing has become an active area, which is beneficial for urban planning,monitoring, and other applications. Despite numerous advancements in this area, there has still not been a comprehensive assessment that provides a systematic overview with a unified evaluation. Accordingly, in this survey paper, we first highlight the key differences between single-and multimodal RS imagery interpretation,then use these differences to guide our research survey of multimodal RS imagery interpretation in a cascaded structure. Finally, some potential future research directions are explored and outlined. We hope that this survey will serve as a starting point for researchers to review state-of-the-art developments and work on multimodal research.

Optimizing satellite ground station facilities scheduling for RSGS:a novel model and algorithm

As the rapid increasing of the number of the satellites,the number of facilities of the satellite ground stations is becoming insuffcient and the conflicts of serving satellite data missions exist.To make full use of the facilities of the China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station(RSGS),scheduling optimization of these facilities was studied in this paper,which was not well-solved by the original method in the operation system of RSGS.The problem is formulated as a continuous time-based mixed integer linear programming(MILP)model.A decomposition optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the large-scale problem,which is difficult to solve using traditional methods.In the first step,the particle swarm optimization(PsO)algorithm is used to optimize the multi-ground station relay tasks,and the multi-ground station optimization problem is transformed into several single ground station optimization problems.Next,in two additional steps,optimization of the facilities at a single ground station is performed to further reduce the size of the model.The proposed method has been applied to operations systems of RSGS,and the approach presented in this article has demonstrated stable performance and suffcient efficiency online,resulting in the automation of facility scheduling.

This paper is the first of a series that describes some of the main dataset resources presently shared through the GEOSS Platform.The GEOSS Platform has been created to provide the technological tool to implement the Global Earth Observation System of Systems(GEOSS);it is a brokering infrastructure that presently brokers more than 190 autonomous data catalogs and information systems.The paper analyses the China Satellite datasets and describes the data publishing process from China GEOSS Data Provider to the GEOSS Platform considering both administrative registration as well as the technical registration.The China Satellite datasets are considered as one of the most important satellite data shared by the GEOSS Platform.The analysis provides some insights as well about GEOSS user searches for China Satellite datasets.

This paper studies the joint information transmission for an intelligent reflecting surface(IRS)aided single-input multiple-output(SIMO) communication system, where an IRS with discrete phase shifts aims to deliver its sensed information to the receiver, besides being a helper of the SIMO system. We first introduce the joint modulation strategy for delivering the information of the primary system and the IRS simultaneously. Specifically, the IRS modulates its information in both the received antenna index and the received signal phase; while the transmitter limits its signal phase in a small region to avoid aliasing. For the proposed strategy, we devise an IRS discrete phase shifts design to maximize the received signal power at the selected receive antenna. Then, we propose a receiver constellation design for the IRS’s and transmitter’s information to maximize the minimum Euclidean distance. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme is practical and competitive compared with several existing joint information transmission schemes.

Aerostat platforms could serve as potential aerial platforms because of their low cost,long flight times,and easy load recovery.They are suitable for emergency communication,early warnings,Earth observations,and other fields.The air-ground communication link between an aerostat platform and the ground is the basic guarantee for aerostat measurement control and service transmission.In traditional aerostat applications,platform measurement control and service transmission usually use different links.The load and ground equipment are complex,and the energy,load,and size of the platform are greatly occupied.In this paper,we propose a Beidou-assisted air-ground communication ground for a near-space platform that uses Beidou's positioning and communication functions to provide tracking and guidance information for the ground station.An air-ground wireless communication mode integrating measurement control and service transmission is achieved.The flight test shows that the system can effectively meet the practical application requirements.

Leaf area index(LAI)and canopy chlorophyll density(CCD)are key indicators of crop growth status.In this study,we compared several vegetation indices and their red-edge modified counterparts to evaluate the optimal red-edge bands and the best vegetation index at different growth stages.The indices were calculated with Sentinel-2 MSI data and hyperspectral data.Their performances were validated against ground measurements using R2,RMSE,and bias.The results suggest that indices computed with hyperspectral data exhibited higher R2 than multispectral data at the late jointing stage,head emergence stage,and filling stage.Furthermore,rededge modified indices outperformed the traditional indices for both data genres.Inversion models indicated that the indices with short red-edge wavelengths showed better estimation at the early joint-ing and milk development stage,while indices with long red-edge wavelength estimate the sought variables better at the middle three stages.The results were consistent with the red-edge inflec-tion point shift at different growth stages.The best indices for Sentinel-2 LAI retrieval,Sentinel-2 CCD retrieval,hyperspectral LAI retrieval,and hyperspectral CCD retrieval at five growth stages were determined in the research.These results are beneficial to crop trait monitoring by providing references for crop biophysical and bio-chemical parameters retrieval.

Urban land use is always the central focus of urban planners and policymakers when pursuing urban sustainable development.Currently,many studies have explored urban land use using satellite data,but few of them can identify the social function of land use through these data.In this research,OpenStreetMap(OSM)data are used to extract urban land use social functional units.Firstly,the OSM data are transferred to actual land use types based on the established mapping rules between OSM data and the urban land use classification standards.Then,the improved DBSCAN algorithm is applied with OSM data of the study area after estimating the parameters of the neighborhood radius(Eps)and the minimum polygons(MinPolys)based on the polygon density.With the two estimated parameters,the improved DBSCAN algorithm is used to cluster residential,commercial and public service land use social functional polygons of the OSM data.Following that,the clusters of the three land use types are processed into land use social functional units.The results show that OSM data perform well in determining these three land use social functional clusters using the improved DBSCAN algorithm,and the social functional units display obvious spatial features.

In this study,based on the EM-DAT(The Emergency Events Database)database,disaster assessment for the“Belt and Road”region was carried out in relation to the SDG_(13.1.1)indicator of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)agenda launched in 2015.A new method for diagnosing trends in the SDG_(13.1.1)indicators based on the Theil-Sen median method is proposed.In addition,using the data available in the EM-DAT,an overview of disaster records is used to quantify disasters for a total of 73 countries.The disaster trends for the period 2015‒2019 were found to demon-strate the following.(1)As a result of geological and climate con-ditions,Asia and Africa are high-risk disaster areas and disasters have caused considerable economic losses and affected the popu-lations in developing and underdeveloped countries in these regions.(2)The clear positive value ofΔs_(13.1.1)found for China reflects the country’s encouraging achievements in disaster preven-tion and mitigation.(3)The value of SDG_(13.1.1)was observed to be increasing in South Asia,northwest Africa and South Africa,with the increase in India and Mauritania being the most serious.The new method proposed in this paper allows the real trend in the SDG_(13.1.1)indicator in various countries to be derived and provides critical intelligence support for international disaster risk reduction plans and sustainable development goals.
