Use of Bitter Leaf(Vernonia amygdalina)Extract and Pasteurization Aim at Improving the Sensory Quality and Shelf-life of Mpedli,a Traditional Opaque Sorghum White Beer from Northern Cameroon

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensory property and shelf life of the processed mpedli beer using aqueous leaves extract of Vernonia amygdalina(VA)and heat *** white sorghum beer was made at the laboratory scale using home-made procedure(Control).Following filtration,the beer was blended with an aqueous leaf extract(1/10,v/v)of VA(BUB).Pasteurization(60°C/30 min)was performed on a portion of the VA blended sample(BPB).The sensory parameters and shelf life of the three samples were evaluated at room temperature during a month *** sensory characteristics of blended and non-supplemented mpedli beer differed significantly(p<0.05).During storage,the colour,bitterness,aroma,odour,viscosity,texture,and overall acceptability of the processed samples were ***(r=0.898;p<0.01)and odour(r=0.930;p<0.01)were both highly correlated with the acceptance of the processed *** non-supplemented samples had the highest sensory scores 48 hours after preparation,while the relevant sensory ratings in processed BUB and BPB samples were recorded from the 12th to the 21st and 27th day of storage,*** findings suggest that combining pasteurization with addition of aqueous leaf extract of VA may help small-scale brewers for improving the sensory quality and extending the shelf life of *** to the findings,the use of bitter leaf could be proposed as an alternative hop in the local brewing industry and may increase incomes of producers of local sorghum beer.

In-vitro Cytotoxicity and Anti-microbial Evaluations of Silver Doped Titania Composite Coatings

Microbial adhesion is a main concern in the aspect of contamination especially in medical devices products. Titania coating on stainless steel substrate has been used as biomaterial application due to its non-toxicity, chemical stability and good mechanical properties. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of 1-3 wt% of silver doped titania (Ag/TiO2) composite coating on; (1) cell viability using in-vitro model, L929 mouse fibroblasts cells, and (2) effect of anti-microbial activity using in-vitro model, Staphylococcus aureus. In this work, 1-3 wt% of Ag doped TiO2 coatings were deposited on stainless steel substrate using RF magnetron sputtering system. Different coating deposition times (1 h, 2 h, 4 h and 6 h) were used. The assessment on cell viability showed that all materials are non toxic on L929 cells. MTT assay study showed more than 80% of cell viable at 200 mg/ml, 100mg/ml, 50 mg/mL and 25 mg/mL. The anti-microbial activity on 6 h deposited 2 wt% of Ag doped TiO2 coating exhibit 99.9% reduction of Staphylococcus aureus after 24 h incubation. From these evaluations, 6 h deposited 2 wt% of Ag doped TiO2 coating indicate as a non-toxic material with excellent anti-bacterial properties.

The huge land areas in China provide highly diverse habitats for *** these macrofungi,many are directly related to people’s daily life and have been utilized by ancient Chinese for at least 6800 *** this study,we evaluate the current known resource diversity of Chinese macrofungi.A total of 1662 taxa are summarized,and all species names and their authorities have been checked and corrected according to authentic mycological *** the 1662 taxa,1020,692,and 480 are considered to be edible,medicinal and poisonous mushrooms,respectively.A few of edible macrofungi in China are commonly used for commercial *** known medicinal functions are labeled for medicinal *** most common medicinal functions possessed by Chinese macrofungi are antitumor or anticancer,followed by antioxidant and antimicrobial.A total of 277 Chinese macrofungi are edible simultaneously with certain medicinal functions and without known *** species could be treated as“Gold Mushrooms”.Contrarily,193 edible and/or medicinal species are also recognized as poisonous *** avoid poisoning caused by these species,ingestion either in a proper way or in small amounts is ***,the mycotoxins metabolized by these poisonous species could be a huge wealth of natural products yet to be *** to utilize these Chinese macrofungal resources is a critical to benefit humans worldwide.

Google Page Rank is a prevalent algorithm for ranking the significance of nodes or websites in a network,and a recent quantum counterpart for Page Rank algorithm has been raised to suggest a higher accuracy of ranking comparing to Google Page *** quantum Page Rank algorithm is essentially based on quantum stochastic walks and can be expressed using Lindblad master equation,which,however,needs to solve the Kronecker products of an O(N^(4))dimension and requires severely large memory and time when the number of nodes N in a network increases above ***,we present an efficient solver for quantum Page Rank by using the Runge-Kutta method to reduce the matrix dimension to O(N^(2))and employing Tensor Flow to conduct GPU parallel *** demonstrate its performance in solving quantum stochastic walks on Erdos-Rényi graphs using an RTX 2060 *** test on the graph of 6000 nodes requires a memory of 5.5 GB and time of 223 s,and that on the graph of 1000 nodes requires 226 MB and 3.6 *** with QSWalk,a currently prevalent Mathematica solver,our solver for the same graph of 1000 nodes reduces the required memory and time to only 0.2%and 0.05%.We apply the solver to quantum Page Rank for the USA major airline network with up to 922 nodes,and to quantum stochastic walk on a glued tree of 2186 *** efficient solver for large-scale quantum Page Rank and quantum stochastic walks would greatly facilitate studies of quantum information in real-life applications.

The indiscriminate utilization of nondegradable polyethylene terephthalate(PET)-based products has triggered serious environmental pollution that has to be resolved vigorously.A simple synthesis of N-doped carbon nanotubes from recycled PET(NCNTs_(r-PET))was developed by a nitric acid-assisted hydrothermal *** results and theoretical calculations show that the intrinsic defects in CNTs_(r-PET)would induce N-doping by NH_(3)generated from nitric acid during the hydrothermal process,thus producing the NCNTs_(r-PET).The life cycle assessment proves that the developed method for N-doped CNTs using r-PET as the carbon source is more environmentally friendly than the conventional chemical vapor deposition using acetylene as the carbon *** a typical application,the NCNTs_(r-PET)delivered an impressive sodium storage capacity with an ultralong *** work not only provides a new route to upcycling waste plastics into valuable carbonaceous materials in an ecofriendly manner,but also reveals a basic understanding of the N-doping mechanism in carbonaceous materials.

A Novel Facial Cream Based on Skin Penetrable Hemp Oil Microparticles

Objective: Hemp seed oil is perfect for most skin types;it moisturizes skin and protects it from inflammation, oxidation, and other causes of aging. The problem is that the Hemp oil-based products do not penetrate the skin;they remain on the skin’s surface. Recently researchers have been trying to prepare nano emulsions of hemp oil to facilitate its permeation to deep skin layers. In all techniques used today, surfactants are added to the emulsification process. These surfactants may cause unwanted skin side effects. In the present study, we prepare micronized Hemp (m-Hemp) without using any surfactants in the micronization process, thus avoiding the side effects associated with surfactant addition. Methods & Results: Particles size of m-Hemp was evaluated using electron microscopy. Various sizes of m-Hemp were found, the smallest being 100 nm in diameter. The antioxidation properties of m-Hemp were measured using the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) technique and were found to be enhanced. Skin topography and morphology following a cream containing m-Hemp treatment were visualized by Optical Profilometry and ESEM respectively. The results show a marked improvement in skin topography in all measured parameters. In addition, human keratinocytes (HaCaT) were exposed to inflammatory conditions and were then treated using Hemp. As a result, one of the key inflammatory factors (IL-2) was significantly reduced after treatment with m-Hemp (p ≤ 0.0001). The skin penetration of the cream containing m-Hemp was tested on human skin using the IMOPE (Iterative Multi-plane Optical Property Extraction) system. The results indicate that m-Hemp penetrates both the stratum corneum and the deep epidermal layers towards the dermis. Conclusion: The new cream prepared with micronized Hemp shows significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects and demonstrates the entrance of m-Hemp to the skin epidermal layer.

Municipal solid waste(MSW) can have a negative impact on the environment and/or human health, if not properly managed. Though landfill is the most common method used to manage MSW, treating MSW using waste-toenergy(Wt E) technologies is an option that is receiving increasing interest. Pyrolysis is a Wt E technology that is capable of converting waste into products such as bio-gas, biooil and bio-char. Bio-char, which varies in composition based on the raw material pyrolysed, has the potential to be used as a fuel and as an applied material for catalysis or adsorption. In this work the removal of azo dye was investigated using biochar from pyrolysis of a cellulosic municipal solid waste. The bio-char was characterised using Scanning Electron Microscopy and Surface Area Analysis. The influence of p H on the dye removal was investigated over the range 4-7. The experimental data was analysed using four non-linear kinetic models(Pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, Weber intraparticle diffusion and Elovich equation) and four non-linear isotherm models(Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Sips), and ranked based on the statistical analysis tools in origin software. The dye removal kinetics most closely followed pseudo-first order kinetics whilst the adsorption isotherms were most closely fitted by the Temkin model over the p H range studied.
