Heat-sensitive moxibustion for lumbar disc herniation:a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

OBJECTIVE:To assess the efficacy and safety of heat-sensitive moxibustion in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation(LDH).METHODS:Randomized controlled trials(RCTs) involving heat-sensitive moxibustion in the treatment of LDH were retrieved from the Chinese Biological Medical Literature database(1978-20011),Weipu database(1989-2011),Wanfang digital journal(1998-2011),China National Knowledge Internet(1979-2011),PubMed(1966-2011),EMBASE(1980-2011),and Cochrane Library(Issue 1,2011).Hand-search of the relevant journals from the Library of Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was also adopted for the collection of *** were extracted and evaluated by two reviewers independently with a specially designed extraction *** Cochrane Collaboration's RevMan 5.0.20 software was used for data ***:A total of 6 trials involving 580 patients were ***-analysis showed that the total effectiveness rate in the heat-sensitive moxibustion group was significantly different when compared with conventional moxibustion [RR=1.19,95% CI [1.06,1.33)] and diclofenac sodium [RR=1.47,95% CI [1.17,1.85)],but similar to that of *** cure rate in the heat-sensitive moxibustion group was significantly different when compared with conventional moxibustion [RR=1.58,95% CI(1.04,2.40)] and diclofenac sodium [RR=1.91,95% CI(1.01,3.60)],but similar with that of *** terms of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association scores,significant differences were noted in subjective indices,objective indices,and daily life *** trials reported that there were no adverse events over the duration of ***:Compared with conventional moxibustion,acupuncture,and diclofenac sodium,heat-sensitive moxibustion in the treatment of LDH is superior in *** large-scale trials are required to define the role of heat-sensitive moxibustion in the treatment of this disease.

Mast cells(MCs)play an important role in the immune *** connective tissues,mechanical stimuli activate intracellular calcium signaling pathways,induce a variety of mediators including leukotriene C4(LTC4)release,and affect MCs’*** paper focuses on MCs’intracellular calcium dynamics and LTC4 release responding to mechanical stimuli,explores signaling pathways in MCs and the effect of interstitial fluid flow on the transport of biological messengers and feedback in the MCs *** use a mathematical model to show that(i)mechanical stimuli including shear stress induced by interstitial fluid flow can activate mechano-sensitive(MS)ion channels on MCs’membrane and allow Ca^(2+)entry,which increases intracellular Ca^(2+)concentration and leads to LTC4 release;(ii)LTC4 in the extracellular space(ECS)acts on surface cysteinyl leukotriene receptors(LTC4R)on adjacent cells,leading to Ca^(2+)influx through Ca^(2+)release-activated Ca^(2+)(CRAC)*** elevated intracellular Ca^(2+)concentration further stimulates LTC4 release and creates a positive feedback in the MCs *** findings of this study may facilitate our understanding of the mechanotransduction process in MCs induced by mechanical stimuli,contribute to understanding of interstitial flow-related mechanobiology in MCs network,and provide a methodology for quantitatively analyzing physical treatment methods including acupuncture and massage in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).

Mechanical effects of needle texture on acupoint tissue

An application of small-world network on predicting the behavior of infectious disease on campus

Networks haven been widely used to understand the spread of infectious *** study examines the properties of small-world networks in modeling infectious disease on *** different small-world models are developed and the behaviors of infectious disease in the models are observed through numerical *** results show that the behavior pattern of infectious disease in a small-world network is different from those in a regular network or a random *** spread of the infectious disease increases as the proportion of long-distance connections p increasing,which indicates that reducing the contact among people is an effective measure to control the spread of infectious *** probability of node position exchange in a network(p2)had no significant effect on the spreading speed,which suggests that reducing human mobility in closed environments does not help control infectious ***,the spreading speed is proportional to the number of shared nodes(s),which means reducing connections between different groups and dividing students into separate sections will help to control infectious *** the end,the simulating speed of the small-world network is tested and the quadratic relationship between simulation time and the number of nodes may limit the application of the SW network in areas with large populations.

Herb-partitioned moxibustion regulated the miRNA expression profile in the thyroid tissues of rats with experimental autoimmune thyroiditis

OBJECTIVE:To observe the effect of herb-partitioned moxibustion(HPM)on the miRNA expression profile of thyroid tissue in experimental autoimmune thyroiditis(EAT)***:Rats were randomly divided into normal control(NC)group,EAT model(EAT)group,HPM group and western medicine(Med)*** model rats were prepared by a combined immunization with complete and incomplete Freund’s adjuvant emulsified with porcine thyroglobulin and *** in the HPM group were treated with HPM,while rats in the Med group were treated with levothyrocine(1μg/2 m L)by *** staining was used to observe the pathological morphological changes of thyroid tissue,ELISAs was uaed to detect the serum concentrations of TGAb,TPOAb,FT3,FT4,*** then performed high-throughput mi RNA sequencing to analyse the mi RNA expression profiles in the thyroid tissues,followed by a bioinformatics ***-q PCR was used to verify the identified differentially expressed mi ***:HPM improved the thyroid tissue morphology and reduced serum TPOAb,TGAb,TSH concentration in EAT rats(P<0.05),but with no obvious effect on FT3 and FT4 *** the TSH,FT3 and FT4 concentration was significantly changed in the Med group(P<0.01 or P<0.05)compared with that of EAT *** results showed that a total of 17 mi RNAs were upregulated,and 4 were downregulated in the EAT rats,in which the expression levels of mi R-346 and mi R-331-5 p were reversed by *** target genes of the mi RNAs that regulated by HPM wereassociated with a variety of immune factors and immune ***-q PCR verification showed that the expression of mi RNA-346 and mi RNA-331-5 p was consistent with the sequencing ***:HPM could regulate the the expression of mi RNA-346 and mi RNA-331-5 p,then act on their target genes to immune and inflammation-related pathways,which may be one of the mechanisms of HPM on EAT rats.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of warming moxibustion Tianshu(ST 25, bilateral) and Qihai(CV6) in patients with diarrhea-dominant irritable bowel syndrome(D-IBS) by assessing predominant factors, and determining the best factor combinations and their interactions. To identify the optimal quantity of warming moxibustion Tianshu(ST 25, bilateral) and Qihai(CV 6) to achieve optimal ***: An L9(3~4) orthogonal design was applied to 233 confirmed subjects based on the three most influential factors and the three most frequently used levels. Nine programs were *** were assigned to four subgroups according to age and gender; each subject underwent one of the nine programs randomly. We selected Tianshu(ST 25, bilateral) and Qihai(CV 6). The scores of symptoms and the IBS Quality of Life(IBS-QOL) were evaluated after the final ***: After treatment, clinical symptoms of all patients were significantly improved(P = 0.001).Quality of life also improved significantly(P < 0.05).For all the participants, frequency was the dominating factor regarding symptoms(P = 0.01). Duration was the dominating factor for quality of life(P =0.0001). The best combination for improving symptoms in 30-40-year-old male and female patients was two courses of 10 min each once a day, and for41-50-year-old male and female patients it was three courses of 10 min(males) or 30 min(females)twice a day. The best combination for quality of life was three courses of 20 min once a day. No interaction was found between frequency and course, or frequency and ***: Warming moxibustion Tianshu(ST25, bilateral) and Qihai(CV 6) is a promising therapy for D-IBS. To acquire optimal efficacy, the three main factors(duration, frequency and treatment course) of the warming moxibustion should reach a specific quantity and be combined appropriately.

What Does GABAergic Neurotransmission System Do in Acupuncture Analgesia?

Pain management is one of the least controversial therapeutic benefits of acupuncture treatment. To date, the mechanism underlying acupuncture analgesia remains poorly understood. In this review, roles of members of GABAergic neurotransmission system which has long been related to pain perception and modulation, in acupuncture analgesia are discussed.

Moutan Cortex Radicis inhibits the nigrostriatal damage in a 6-OHDA-induced Parkinson's disease model

The traditionally used oriental herbal medicine Moutan Cortex Radicis [MCR; Paeonia Suffruticosa Andrews(Paeoniaceae)] exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and analgesic effects. In the present study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of differently fractioned MCR extracts in a 6-hydroxydopamine(OHDA)-induced Parkinson's disease model and neuro-blastoma B65 cells. Ethanol-extracted MCR was fractionated by n-hexane, butanol, and distilled water. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were treated first with 20 μg of 6-OHDA, followed by three MCR extract fractions(100 or 200 mg·kg^(-1)) for 14 consecutive days. In the behavioral rotation experiment, the MCR extract-treated groups showed significantly decreased number of net turns compared with the 6-OHDA control group. The three fractions also significantly inhibited the reduction in tyrosine hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars compacta following 6-OHDA neurotoxicity. Western blotting analysis revealed significantly reduced tyrosine hydroxylase expression in the substantia nigra pars compacta in the 6-OHDA-treated group, which was significantly inhibited by the n-hexane or distilled water fractions of MCR. B65 cells were exposed to the extract fractions for 24 h prior to addition of 6-OHDA for 30 min; treatment with n-hexane or distilled water fractions of MCR reduced apoptotic cell death induced by 6-OHDA neurotoxicity and inhibited nitric oxide production and neuronal nitric oxide synthase expression. These results showed that n-hexane-and distilled water-fractioned MCR extracts inhibited 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity by suppressing nitric oxide production and neuronal nitric oxide synthase activity, suggesting that MCR extracts could serve as a novel candidate treatment for the patients with Parkinson's disease.
