Hepatic encephalopathy before and neurological complications after liver transplantation have no impact on the employment status 1 year after transplantation

To investigate the impact of hepatic encephalopathy before orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) and neurological complications after OLT on employment after OLT. METHODSOne hundred and fourteen patients with chronic liver disease aged 18-60 years underwent neurological examination to identify neurological complications, neuropsychological tests comprising the PSE-Syndrome-Test yielding the psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score, the critical flicker frequency and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), completed a questionnaire concerning their occupation and filled in the short form 36 (SF-36) to assess health-related quality of life before OLT and 12 mo after OLT, if possible. Sixty-eight (59.6%) patients were recruited before OLT, while on the waiting list for OLT at Hannover Medical School [age: 48.7 ± 10.2 years, 45 (66.2%) male], and 46 (40.4%) patients were included directly after OLT. RESULTSBefore OLT 43.0% of the patients were employed. The patients not employed before OLT were more often non-academics (employed: Academic/non-academic 16 (34.0%)/31 vs not employed 10 (17.6%)/52, P = 0.04), had more frequently a history of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) (yes/no; employed 15 (30.6%)/34 vs not employed 32 (49.2%)/33, P = 0.05) and achieved worse results in psychometric tests (RBANS sum score mean ± SD employed 472.1 ± 44.5 vs not employed 443.1 ± 56.7, P = 0.04) than those employed. Ten patients (18.2%), who were not employed before OLT, resumed work afterwards. The patients employed after OLT were younger [age median (range, min-max) employed 47 (42, 18-60) vs not employed 50 (31, 29-60), P = 0.01], achieved better results in the psychometric tests (RBANS sum score mean ± SD employed 490.7 ± 48.2 vs not employed 461.0 ± 54.5, P = 0.02) and had a higher health-related quality of life (SF 36 sum score mean ± SD employed 627.0 ± 138.1 vs not employed 433.7 ± 160.8; P < 0.001) compared to patients not employed after OLT.

Relationships between cell cycle pathway gene polymorphisms and risk of hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To investigate the associations between the polymorphisms of cell cycle pathway genes and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). METHODS: We enrolled 1127 cases newly diagnosed with HCC from the Tumor Hospital of Guangxi Medical University and 1200 non-tumor patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University. General demographic characteristics, behavioral information, and hematological indices were collected by unified questionnaires. Genomic DNA was isolatedfrom peripheral venous blood using Phenol-Chloroform. The genotyping was performed using the Sequenom Mass ARRAY i PLEX genotyping method. The association between genetic polymorphisms and risk of HCC was shown by P-value and the odd ratio(OR) with 95% confidence interval(CI) using the unconditional logistic regression after adjusting for age, sex, nationality, smoking, drinking, family history of HCC, and hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection. Moreover, stratified analysis was conducted on the basis of the status of HBV infection, smoking, and alcohol ***: The HCC risk was lower in patients with the MCM4 rs2305952 CC(OR = 0.22, 95%CI: 0.08-0.63, P = 0.01) and with the CHEK1 rs515255 TC, TT, TC/TT(OR = 0.73, 95%CI: 0.56-0.96, P = 0.02; OR = 0.67, 95%CI: 0.46-0.97, P = 0.04; OR = 0.72, 95%CI: 0.56-0.92, P = 0.01, respectively). Conversely, the HCC risk was higher in patients with the KAT2 B rs17006625 GG(OR = 1.64, 95%CI: 1.01-2.64, P = 0.04). In addition, the risk was markedly lower for those who were carriers of MCM4 rs2305952 CC and were also HBs Ag-positive and non-drinking and nonsmoking(P < 0.05, respectively) and for those who were carriers of CHEK1 rs515255 TC, TT, TC/TT and were also HBs Ag-negative and non-drinking(P < 0.05, respectively). In situ formation of bimetallic FeNi nanoparticles on sand through green technology:Application for tetracycline removal

In this study,FeNi nanoparticles were green synthesized using Punica granatum(pomegranate)peel extract,and these nanoparticles were also formed in situ over quartz sand(GS-FeNi)for removal of tetracycline(TC).Under the optimized operating conditions,(GS-FeNi concentration:1.5%w/v;concentration of TC:20 mg/L;interaction period:180 min),99±0.2%TC removal was achieved in the batch reactor The removaT capacity was 181±1 mg/g.A detailed characterization of the sorbent and the solution before and after the interaction revealed that the removal mechanism(s)involved both the sorption and degradation of *** reusability of reactant was assessed for four cycles of operation,and 77±4%of TC removal was obtained in the *** judge the environmental sustainability of the process,residual toxicity assay of the interacted TC solution was performed with indicator bacteria(Bacillus and Pseudomonas)and algae(Chlorella sp.),which confirmed a substantial decrease in the *** continuous column studies were undertaken in the packed bed reactors using *** the optimized conditions,quite high removal efficiency(978±5 mg/g)was obtained in the *** application of GS-FeNi for antibiotic removal was further evaluated in lake water,tap water,and ground water spiked with TC,and the removal capacity achieved was found to be 781±5,712±5,and 687±3 mg/g,*** work can pave the way for treatment of antibiotics and other pollutants in the reactors using novel green composites prepared from fruit wastes.

Microbial Biofilm Formation as a Dental-fouling Microorganisms Attachment Phenomenon in Oral Cavity Environment

DMFP （Dental microbial fouling phenomenon） of OCE （oral cavity environment） was studied in the local dental labs. Multi-smears of mature supra gingival plaques were randomly collected from fifty persons in dental labs that had different cultures, ages, sex and different scientific levels. Rapid microbial identification method was used to identify of these multi-smears by using vitek-2 compact instrument. The most frequent and appearance species of bacteria was Pantoeae spp., then Klebsiella pneumonia. Total species of microbial fouling in supra gingival plaques were included sixteen species： Staphyllococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pantoeae spp., Aercococcus viridians, Leuconostoc mesenteroides cremorise, ***, Streptococcus sanguinis, Staphyllococcus sciuri, Stenotrophomonus maltiphilia, Kocuria varians, Gememlla morbillorum, Granulicatella adiacens, Nonreac biopattern, Kocuria kritinae, Kocuria rosea and *** while six fungal species were Tricoderma viride, Aspergillus flavus, Tricoderma harzianum, Cladosporium macrocarpum, Penicillium citrinum and Verticillium lecanii in addition to two yeast species were recorded Candida dubliniensis and Candida glabrata. The results were detected the most appearance of bacteria Pantoeae sp., then Klebsiella pneumonia, then Staphyllococcus aureus. These results of study suggest that adhesive strength conjugated with the biofilm layers presence in OCE may vary across different from one to other persons and mark a new path of inquiry for dental Microbial-fouling phenomenon research.

Gamma Irradiation Effects in InBi_(0.8) Te_(0.2) Crystals Grown by Horizontal Directional Freezing

The high-energy gamma-ray irradiation treatment using Co-60 isotope offers the possibility of engineering mechanical and optoelectronic properties of In Bi0.8Te0.2crystals. Tellurium-doped indium bismuthide（In Bi） crystals were prepared by horizontal directional freezing technique. Dose-dependent modifications in structure, composition and surface topographical features have been analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray energy-dispersive analysis, transmission electron and atomic force microscopy, respectively. Dielectric constant and dielectric loss were found to increase with the cumulative dose of radiation, and a shift in the ferroelectric transition temperature（Tc） from 405 to 410 K was observed for25 k Gy. Upon irradiation, there is an enhancement in microhardness（HV）, yield stress（ry） and stiffness constant（C11）.The optical transmittance was decreased by 12.45%, resulting in a reduction in the optical band gap from 0.210 e V to0.198 e V. These results indicate the suitability of In Bi0.8Sb0.2crystals for low-wavelength infrared applications.

A Simple Method to Produce Sub-Nucleosome Complexes of High Purity In Vitro

With the identification of increasing number of chromatin modifiers, histone variants, histone post-translational modifications and their cross-talk, it is essential to validate these findings and interactions in vitro for which pure histone complexes are required. Although, the production of such complexes has been described earlier but still it remains a challenge for a non-specialist lab. Here we describe a protocol to quickly obtain large quantities of highly pure histones using bacterial expression system for GST pull-down and reconstitution experiments. In addition, we describe methods to quickly reconstitute and purify H2A/H2B dimers, H3/H4 tetramers and histone octamers for in vitro experiments. We demonstrate that these sub-complexes are properly folded and are hence, true representatives of the actual substrates in vivo. We also show that histones have a propensity to be non-specifically cleaved by proteases. Our results suggest that TEV protease is the most suitable protease while working with histones. The methodology described here should allow researchers to purify histone complexes in three days enabling functional and structural analyses of histone variants, mutants and post-translational modifications.

Vein of Galen aneurismal malformations-clinical characteristics,treatment and presentation: Three cases report

BACKGROUND The vein of Galen aneurismal malformations(VGAM) are rare arteriovenous malformations of the embryonic choroid plexus. They represent about 30% of paediatric neurovascular disorders and show diverse characteristics. The VGAM is constituted by a midline dilated venous structure that receives blood from abnormal macroscopic or microscopic arteriovenous shunting vessels. Two types of VGAM exist, the choroidal and the mural. The treatment represents a challenge with the therapeutic objective to preserve the normal brain development without creating new neurological *** SUMMARY We present three cases of VGAM in the early postnatal period and their treatment. All patents were treated with the endovascular technique, which was successful. According to our experience, the endovascular technique is a safe and efficient mode of VGAM *** The objective of treatment aims to child's normal neurological development. A proper selection of patients and a thorough diagnostic workup is of vital importance. When the endovascular treatment is performed, the primary aim is not a complete VGAM exclusion at one time, which could produce a sudden reversal of blood flow with consequent venous infarction and ischemia. The aim is therefore to occlude as much of the VGAM as needed to relieve the congestive cardiac failure, to gain time and to create the conditions for a normal maturation of the neurovascular system. With the use of endovascular techniques, which represent not only the first choice of treatment but also the only safe therapeutic modality, the natural history of VGAM and their risks may be avoided safely.
