Background:Forest restoration has been considered an effective method to increase soil organic carbon(SOC),whereas it remains unclear whether long-term forest restoration will continuously increase *** large uncertainties may be mainly due to the limited knowledge on how soil microorganisms will contribute to SOC accumulation over ***:We simultaneously documented SOC,total phospholipid fatty acids(PLFAs),and amino sugars(AS)content across a forest restoration gradient with average stand ages of 14,49,70,and>90 years in southern ***:The SOC and AS continuously increased with stand *** ratio of fungal PLFAs to bacterial PLFAs showed no change with stand age,while the ratio of fungal AS to bacterial AS significantly *** total microbial residue-carbon(AS-C)accounted for 0.95-1.66% in SOC across all forest restoration stages,with significantly higher in fungal residue-C(0.68-1.19%)than bacterial residue-C(0.05-0.11%).Furthermore,the contribution of total AS-C to SOC was positively correlated with clay content at 0-10 cm soil layer but negatively related to clay content at 10-20 cm soil ***:These findings highlight the significant contribution of AS-C to SOC accumulation along forest restoration stages,with divergent contributions from fungal residues and bacterial *** clay content with stand age significantly affects the divergent contributions of AS-C to SOC at two different soil layers.

Mangroves are one of the most ecologically sensitive ecosystems to global climate change,which have cascading impacts on soil carbon(C),nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)***,mangroves are experiencing increasing N and P loadings and reduced oxygen availability due to intensified climate change and human ***,both direct and interactive effects of these perturbations on microbially mediated soil C,N and P cycling are poorly ***,we simultaneously investigated the effects of N and P loadings and reduced oxygen on microbial biomass,microbial respiration,and extracellular enzyme activities(EEAs)in mangrove *** calculated the microbial metabolic quotient(qCO_(2)),which is regarded as a useful inverse metric of microbial C use efficiency(CUE).Our results show that reduced oxygen significantly increases both qCO_(2) and microbial specific EEAs(enzyme activity per unit of microbial biomass)for C-,N-and P-acquisition regardless of N or P ***,we found that qCO_(2) positively correlated with microbial specific EEAs under reduced oxygen,whereas no clear relationship was detected under ambient *** results suggest that reduced oxygen increases microbial specific EEAs at the expense of increasing microbial respiration per unit biomass,indicating higher energy cost per unit enzyme production.

BACKGROUND The musculoskeletal tumour society score(MSTS) is a well-known questionnaire for measuring functional outcome in patients with neoplasms in the *** guidelines for cross-cultural translation and validation ensure the equivalence of content between the original and translated versions. The translation and validation provide the possibility to compare different sarcoma populations on an international level. This study is based on the hypothesis that the Danish MSTS questionnaire is a valid tool for measuring the end result after surgery for neoplasms in the *** To validate the Danish version of the upper and lower extremity version of the *** The translation of the MSTS was conducted in accordance with international guidelines. Patients operated for sarcomas and aggressive benign tumors were invited to participate in the study. The psychometric properties of the Danish version of the MSTS were tested in terms of validity and reliability and for the risk of floor or ceiling effect. Spearman's rank coefficient was used to test the validity by comparing with the Toronto Extremity Salvage Score(TESS). The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient(ICC) was used to evaluate inter-rater reliability. Cronbach's alpha was used to test for internal consistency. Spearman's rank coefficient was used to compare the MSTS lower extremity version with the objective test, Timed Up and Go(TUG).RESULTS The upper extremity version demonstrated an ICC of 0.95 in the inter-rater reliability test. The lower extremity version had an ICC of 0.88 in the inter-rater reliability test, respectively. Both MSTS versions showed a ceiling effect. Thevalidity of the MSTS was measured by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient by comparing the MSTS with the TESS and found it to be of 0.80(P < 0.01) and 0.83(P < 0.01) for the upper extremity and lower extremity version, respectively. Environmental contaminants such as persistent organic pollutants （POPs） are man-made bioaccumulative compounds with long half-lives that are found throughout the world as a result of heavy use in a variety of consumer products during the twentieth century. Wildlife and animal studies have long suggested adverse effects of exposure to these compounds on human reproductive health, which, according to the endocrine disrupter hypothesis, are ascribed to the compounds＇ potential to interfere with endocrine signaling, especially when exposure occurs during certain phases of fetal and childhood development. An extensive number of epidemiological studies have addressed the possible effects of exposure to POPs on male reproductive health, but the results are conflicting. Thus far, most studies have focused on investigating exposure and the different reproductive health outcomes during adulthood. Some studies have addressed the potential harmful effects of fetal exposure with respect to malformations at birth and/ or reproductive development, whereas only a few studies have been able to evaluate whether intrauterine exposure to POPs has long-term consequences for male reproductive health with measurable effects on semen quality markers and reproductive hormone levels in adulthood. Humans are not exposed to a single compound at a time, but rather, to a variety of different substances with potential divergent hormonal effects. Hence, how to best analyze epidemiological data on combined exposures remains a significant challenge. This review on POPs will focus on current knowledge regarding the potential effects of exposure to POPs during fetal and childhood life and during adulthood on male reproductive health, including a critical revision of the endocrine disruption hypothesis, a comment on pubertal development as part of reproductive development and a comment on how to account for combined exposures in epidemiological research.

A review of the sentinel prey method as a way of quantifying invertebrate predation under field conditions

Sentinel prey can provide a direct, quantitative measure of predation under field conditions. Live sentinel prey provides more realistic data but rarely allows the partitioning of the total predation pressure; artificial prey is less natural but traces left by different predators are identifiable, making it suitable for comparative studies. We reviewed the available evidence of the use of both types of invertebrate sentinel prey. Fifty- seven papers used real prey, usually measuring predation on a focal （often pest） species, with studies overwhelmingly from North America. The median predation was 25.8% d-1. Artificial sentinel prey （45 papers） were used in both temperate and tropical areas, placed more above ground than at ground level. The most commonly used artificial prey imitated a caterpillar. Up to 14 predator groups were identified, registering a median of 8.8% d J predation; half the studies reported only bird predation. Predation on real prey was higher than on artificial ones, but invertebrate predation was not higher than vertebrate predation. Invertertebrate but not vertebrate predation was negatively related to prey size. Predation near the Equator was not higher than at higher latitudes, nor in cultivated than noncultivated habitats. The use of sentinel prey is not yet standardised in terms of prey size, arrangement, exposure period or data reporting. Due to the simplicity and ease of use of the method, such standardisation may increase the usefulness of comparative studies, contributing to the understanding of the importance and level of predation in various habitats worldwide.

In a fragmented landscape,transitional zones between neighboring habitats are common,and our understanding of community organizational forces across such habitats is *** studies are numerous,but the majority of them utilize information on species richness and *** and taxonomic diversity,however,provide little information on the functioning and phylogeny of the co-existing *** the evaluation of their functional and phylogenetic relationships,we aimed to assess whether ground beetle assemblages are deterministically or stochastically structured along grassland-forest *** results showed different community assembly rules on opposite sides of the forest *** the grassland,co-occurring species were functionally and phylogenetically not different from the random null model,indicating a random assembly *** to this,at the forest edge and the interior,co-occurring species showed functional and phylogenetic clustering,thus environmental filtering was the likely process structuring carabid *** assembly in the grassland was considerably affected by asymmetrical species flows (spillover)across the forest edge:more forest species penetrated into the grassland than open-habitat and generalist species entered into the *** asymmetrical species flow underlines the importance of the filter function of forest *** unfavorable,human-induced changes to the structure,composition and characteristics of forest edges may alter their filter function,edges have to be specifically considered during conservation management.

Fragility is one of the central concepts in glass and liquid sciences,as it characterizes the extent of deviation of viscosity from Arrhenius behavior and is linked to a range of glass ***,the intervention of crystallization often prevents the assessment of fragility in poor glass-formers,such as supercooled metallic *** experimental data on their compositional dependence are scarce,let alone fundamentally *** this work,we use fast scanning calorimetry to overcome this obstacle and systematically study the fragility in a ternary La–Ni–Al system,over previously inaccessible composition *** observe fragility dropped in a small range with the Al alloying,indicating an alloying-induced fragility *** use x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,resistance measurements,electronic structure calculations,and DFT-based deep-learning atomic simulations to investigate the cause of this fragility *** results show that the fragility crossover can be fundamentally ascribed to the electronic covalency associated with the unique Al–Al *** findings provide insight into the origin of fragility in metallic liquids from an electronic structure perspective and pave a new way for the design of metallic glasses.

The impact of male overweight on semen quality and outcome of assisted reproduction

It is well-documented that male overweight and obesity causes endocrine disorders that might diminish the male reproductive capacity; however, reports have been conflicting regarding the influence of male body mass index （BMI） on semen quality and the outcome of assisted reproductive technology （ART）. The aim of this study was to investigate whether increased male BMI affects sperm quality and the outcome of assisted reproduction in couples with an overweight or obese man and a non-obese partner. Data was prospectively collected from 612 infertile couples undergoing ART at a Danish fertility center. Self-reported information on paternal height and weight were recorded and BMI was calculated. The men were divided into four BMI categories： underweight BMI 〈 20 kgm^-2, normal BMI 20-24.9 kg m^-2, overweight BMI 25-29.9 kgm^-2 and obese BMI 〉 30 kgm^-2. Conventional semen analysis was performed according to the World Health Organization guideline and sperm DNA integrity was analyzed by the Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay （SCSA）. No statistically significant effect of male BMI was seen on conventional semen parameters （sperm concentration, total sperm count, seminal volume and motility） or on SCSA-results. Furthermore, the outcome of ART regarding fertilization rate, number of good quality embryos （GQE）, implantation and pregnancy outcome was not influenced by the increasing male BMIo
