This paper will discuss the difference between genre fiction and mainstream fiction, the difference between science fiction and other fields of genre fiction, and in particular, the philosophical use of science fiction in our search for a better world. All genres used to be called ″romance″ to distinguish them from ″true″ novels. There were arguments about it in Hawthorne’s The House of Seven Gables and in a heated exchange between H.G. Wells and Henry James. I will talk about this difference. All genre fiction pays attention to the external world, but science fiction is the only one of them that looks forward by being grounded in the present. Is science fiction really a genre? There are some doubts. Science fiction is not about science per se, but about the philosophy of science:the study of the external world and its relation to man. It is ideal for ″thought experiments.″ By exploring possible futures, we cannot only examine our present world, but can see ways in which it can be improved. Hence, science fiction is the search for, if not utopia, then at least a better world. This paper will also discuss the ideas of Kim Stanley Robinson, Ursula K. Le Guin, and others in their search for a better future.

In this paper,snow and ice thickness products derived from an updated Fast Ice Prediction System Version 2.0(FIPS V2.0)in Prydz Bay,East Antarctica,are introduced and compared with in-situ *** V2.0 is comprised of a newly-developed snowdrift parameterization compared to the original FIPS *** simulation domain covers the entire fast ice region in Prydz Bay and is config-ured to 720 grid cells,with a spatial resolution of 0.125°.The ERAInterim reanalysis from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting(ECMWF)were used as the atmospheric *** in-situ observations were obtained near Zhongshan Station by the wintering team,and the measurement frequency of the snow and ice thicknesses was around one *** the FIPS V2.0 pro-ducts and in-situ observations introduced in this paper cover the time periods from 2012 to *** primary assessments based on the in-situ observations show that FIPS V2.0 has mean biases of 0.01±0.07 m and 0.23±0.09 m for snow and ice thickness simula-tions,*** results indicate that the updated FIPS V2.0 produces a reasonable snow thickness due to the newly-developed snowdrift parameterization,but it overestimates the ice thickness due to the cold bias in the air temperature *** 2-D snow and ice thickness distributions provide important references for sea ice thermodynamic studies,remote sensing validations,and ice-breaker navigation assessments in this *** dataset is avail-able at http://***/10.11922/sciencedb.j00076.00066.

Chromobacterium violaceum is a Gram negative, facultative anaerobe, generally present in water, soil in tropical and subtropical regions. This bacterium is an emerging environmental pathogen that causes life threatening infection in humans and animals. It can cause wound infection, visceral abscess, septicaemia, meningitis, diarrhoea, UTI. It is associated with significant mortality due to severe systemic infection. As the bacteria have high spreading tendency leading to sepsis, early identification and prompt treatment is necessary. Here we report a case of Chromobacterium violaceum wound infection in a 9 years old male from Dhaka, who was successfully treated with combination of cefixime and flucloxacillin antibiotics as per culture sensitivity report.

Climate change influences both ecosystems and ecosystem *** impacts of climate change on ecosystems and ecosystem services have been separately ***,it is less well known how ecosystem changes driven by climate change will influence ecosystem services,especially in climate-sensitive ***,we analyzed future climate trends between 2040 and 2100 under four Shared Socioeconomic Pathway(SSP) scenarios(SSP1-2.6,SSP2-4.5,SSP3-7.0,and SSP5-8.5) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6(CMIP6).We quantified their impacts on ecosystems patterns and on the ecosystem service of sandstorm prevention on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP),one of the most climate-sensitive regions in the world,using Random Forest model(RF) and Revised Wind Erosion Equation(RWEQ).Strong warming(0.04℃/yr) and wetting(0.65 mm/yr) trends were projected from 2015 to *** these trends,there will be increased interspersion in the pattern of grassland and sparse vegetation with meadow and swamp vegetation,although their overall area will remain similar,while the areas of shrub and needleleaved forest classes will increase and move toward higher *** by the changes in ecosystem patterns caused by climate change indirectly,grassland will play an irreplaceable role in providing sandstorm prevention services,and sandstorm prevention services will increase gradually from 2040 to 2100(1.059-1.070 billion tons) on the ***,some areas show a risk of deterioration in the future and these should be the focus of ecological *** research helps to understand the cascading relationship among climate change,ecosystem patterns and ecosystem services,which provides important spatio-temporal information for future ecosystem service management.
