Exploration of heavy metals and organic pollutants, their leaching capacity along with health and environmental risks in contaminated industrial construction and demolition waste （ICDW） within a pesticide manufacturing plant were investigated. A maximum content of 90.8 mg·kg-1 Cd was found present in the wastes, which might originate from phosphorus rocks and industrial sulfuric acid used in pesticide production processes. An average concentration of 979.8 mg·kg-1 dichlorovos and other 11 organophosphorus pesticide were also detected. Relatively high leaching rates of around 4.14‰ were obtained from laboratory simulated ICDW using both glacial acetic acidsodium hydroxide and deionized water. Pesticide pollutants had the strongest tendency to retaining on dry bricks （leaching rate 1.68 9‰） compared to mortar-coatings, etc. due to their different physical characteristics and octanol-water partioning coefficient. Mobility of pesticide from on-site ICDW by water was spatially correlated to waste types, process sections and human activities, with a flux of leaching rate between 5.9‰ to 27.4%. Risk-based corrective action （RBCA） model was used to simulate the risk of contaminated ICDW debris randomly scattered. Oral and demlal ingestion amount by local workers was 9.8 × 10-3 and 1.9 × 10-2 mg.（kg-d）-1, respectively. Potential leaching risk to aquatic systems exceeded the limit for nearly 75% waste. Environmental and health risk exceedance was found in most ICDW, while the risk value of the most severely contaminated brick waste was 660 times beyond critical level. Implications for waste management involving construction and deconstruction work, waste transferring and regulation supplying were also provided.

In order to promote digital innovations in the field of energy use and monitoring in all end customer sectors, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) has launched the “Pilotprogramm Einsparzähler” in 2016. The program promotes the development of digital platforms following the “Efficiency First” principle, focusing not on individual projects but on the establishment of a business model. smartB successfully applied for subsidies for the development of a software tool, the architecture of which is the content of this open source paper. The tool applies a multivariate regression-model to model a given system’s energy consumption (significant energy uses or SEUs), adjusted to relevant external factors (e.g. weather) and given output levels or product properties. Thereby comparing energy consumption before and after an energy conservation measure (ECM), the tool allows for a quantification and verification of achieved energy savings as laid out in international standards for energy management (ISO, 2014). Achieved energy savings induced by an ECM and energy efficiency improvements cannot be measured directly. We use the term “negawatt-hour”, defined as a unit of energy saved as a direct result of energy conservation measures. International norms provide accepted standards to derive quantified savings in negawatt-hours from a qualified comparison between consumption before and after an ECM, as presented at the beginning of the paper.

The current trend of forest management in many countries is reduced use of clear-felling and planting, and increased use of continuous cover management. In Finland, the new forest act of 2014 made all types of cuttings equally allowable on the condition that if the post-cutting residual stand basal area is too low, the stand must be regenerated within certain time frame. Forest landowner can freely choose between even-and uneven-aged management. This study developed a method for opti-mizing the timing and type of cuttings without the need to categorize the management system as either even-aged or uneven-aged. A management system that does not set any requirements on the sequence of post-cutting diameter distributions is called any-aged management. Planting or sow-ing was used when stand basal area fell below the required minimum basal area and the amount of advance regeneration was less than required in the regulations. When the cuttings of 200 stands managed earlier with even-aged silviculture were optimized with the developed system, final felling followed by artificial regeneration was selected for almost 50%of stands. Reduction of the minimum basal area limit greatly decreased the use of artificial regeneration but improved profitability, suggesting that the truly optimal management would be to use natural regeneration in financially mature stands. The optimal type of thinning was high thinning in 97-99%of cases. It was calculated that the minimum basal area re-quirement reduced the mean net present value of the stands by 12-16%when discount rate was 3-5%.

Plateaued rate of decline in neonatal mortality rate is one of the major obstacles in achieving Millennium Development Goal 4 especially in developing countries. Even in India, nationwide interventions targeting safe mother and newborn care have not yielded the desired impact, indicating the necessity to combat neonatal mortality rate at population specific level. The objective of this study is to identify the newborn care practices and beliefs, analyze their harmful or beneficial characteristics, describe the deviations from the essential newborn care practices during hospital/home delivery, explain barriers to care seeking and identify areas of potential resistance for behavior change;and utilize study findings to tailor-make cost-effective essential newborn care package. The study uses qualitative data from in-depth interview of mothers who had experienced neonatal death and key-informant interviews with healthcare personnel and birth attendants. 33 cases were randomly selected from the registered neonatal deaths across Bharuch district of Gujarat, India. Key finding of this study is less prevalent practice of essential newborn care among all cases irrespective of place of delivery and the health-care personnel facilitating delivery. Habitual traditional/tribal newborn care methods challenge the practice of prescribed essential newborn care. Clustering of deaths in few households added significantly to the existing burden of neonatal deaths, attributed to superstition “Ratewa” by tribal. Study has concluded that the introduction and implementation of essential newborn care at hospital and community/ household level are the need of the hour. Quality home based neonatal care through cost effective interventions is deemed necessary where accessing institutional care is not possible in the immediate term. Soil microbial communities and enzyme activities play key roles in soil *** are sensitive to changes in environmental factors,including seasonal temperature,precipitation variations and soil *** understand the interactive mechanisms of seasonal changes that affect soil microbial communities and enzyme activities in a subtropical masson pine(Pinus massoniana)forest,we investigated the soil microbial community structure and enzyme activities to identify the effect of seasonal changes on the soil microbial community for two years in Jinyun Mountain National Nature Reserve,Chongqing,*** soil microbial community structure was investigated using phospholipid fatty acids(PLFAs).The results indicated that a total of 36 different PLFAs were identified,and 16:0 was found in the highest proportions in the four seasons,moreover,the total PLFAs abundance were highest in spring and lowest in *** and actinomycetes were the dominant types in the study *** changes also had a significant(P<0.05)influence on the soil enzyme *** maximum and minimum values of the invertase and catalase activities were observed in autumn and winter,***,the maximum and minimum values of the urease and phosphatase acid enzymatic activities were found in spring and winter,*** correspondence analysis(CCA)analysis revealed that the seasonal shifts in soil community composition and enzyme activities were relatively more sensitive to soil moisture and temperature,but the microbial community structure and enzyme activity were not correlated with soil pH in the study *** study highlights how the seasonal variations affect the microbial community and function(enzyme activity)to better understand and predict microbial responses to future climate regimes in subtropical area.
