The Theaflavin Monomers Inhibit the Cancer Cells Growth in Vitro

The inhibition effects of tea theaflavins complex (TFs), theaflavin-3-3’-digallate (TFDG), theaflavin-3’-gallate (TF2B), and an unidentified compound (UC) on the growth of human liver cancer BEL-7402 cells, gastric cancer MKN-28 cells and acute promyelocytic leukemia LH-60 cells were investigated. TFs was obtained through the catalysis of catechins with immobilized polyphenols oxidase. TFDG, TF2B and UC were isolated from TFs with high speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC). The results showed that TF2B significantly inhibited the growth of all three kinds of cancer cells, TFs, TFDG and UC had some effect on BEL-7402 and MKN-28, but little activity on LH-60. The inhibition effects of TF2B, TFDG, and UC on BEL-7402 and MKN-28 were stronger than TFs. The relationship coefficients between monomer concentration and its inhibition rate against MKN-28 and BEL-7402 were 0.87 and 0.98 for TF2B, 0.96 and 0.98 for UC, respectively. The IC50 values of TFs, TF2B, and TFDG were 0.18, 0.11, and 0.16 mM on BEL-7402 cells, and 1.11, 0.22, and 0.25 mM on MKN-28 cells respectively.

Relationship between the Pre-existing Active Kunlun Fault and Co-seismic Surface Ruptures Produced by the 2001 Mw 7.8 Central Kunlun Earthquake, China

Field investigations allow to constrain the co-seismic surface rupture zone of ～400 km with a strike-slip up to 16.3 m associated with the 2001 Mw 7.8 Central Kunlun earthquake that occurred along the western segmentof the Kunlun fault, northern Tibet. The co-seismic rupture structures are almost duplicated on the pre-existing fault traces of the Kunlun fault. The deformational characteristics of the co-seismic surface ruptures reveal that the earthquake had a nearly pure strike-slip mechanism. The geologic and topographic evidence clearly shows that spatialdistributions of the co-seismic surface ruptures are restricted by the pre-existing geological structures of the Kunlun fault.

Effect of N,N-Dimethylglycine on Homocysteine Metabolism in Rats Fed Folate-Sufficient and Folate-Deficient Diets

Objective This study aimed to investigate the effects of N,N-dimethylglycine(DMG) on the concentration and metabolism of plasma homocysteine(pHcy) in folate-sufficient and folate-deficient *** In this study, 0.1% DMG was supplemented in 20% casein diets that were either folatesufficient(20 C) or folate-deficient(20 CFD). Blood and liver of rats were subjected to assays of Hcy and its metabolites. Hcy and its related metabolite concentrations were determined using a liquid chromatographic *** Folate deprivation significantly increased pHcy concentration in rats fed 20 C diet(from 14.19 ±0.39 μmol/L to 28.49 ± 0.50 μmol/L;P < 0.05). When supplemented with DMG, pHcy concentration was significantly decreased(12.23 ± 0.18 μmol/L) in rats fed 20 C diet but significantly increased(31.56 ±0.59 μmol/L) in rats fed 20 CFD. The hepatic methionine synthase activity in the 20 CFD group was significantly lower than that in the 20 C group;enzyme activity was unaffected by DMG supplementation regardless of folate sufficiency. The activity of hepatic cystathionine β-synthase(CBS) in the 20 CFD group was decreased but not in the 20 C group;DMG supplementation enhanced hepatic CBS activity in both groups, in which the effect was significant in the 20 C group but not in the other *** DMG supplementation exhibited hypohomocysteinemic effects under folate-sufficient conditions. By contrast, the combination of folate deficiency and DMG supplementation has deleterious effect on pHcy concentration.

Dynamics of non-structural carbohydrates following a full masting event reveal a role for stored starch in relation to reproduction in Fagus crenata

Although mature trees have substantial non-structural carbohydrate(NSC)storage that is well documented with respect to its capacity to buffer the asynchrony of supply and demand at the whole-plant level,its role in reproduction remains poorly understood,especially in mast seeding *** order to elucidate whether masting depletes the whole-tree NSC storage pool,seasonal and inter-annual variations in starch and soluble sugar(SS)concentrations in branchlets,stems and coarse roots of Fagus crenata were measured in two stands over 5 years after a full masting *** masting reduced individual storage pools to 72% and 49% of the maxima in the two stands;this was observed 2-3 years after full *** addition,temporary reduction in starch concentration in summer due to moderate fruiting was found in roots and deep sapwood cores of stems,representing tree rings formed 20 years ago,but not in *** with a higher starch storage pool in roots than in branchlets,these results indicate that starch stored in roots and stems is available and supports life-history traits,such as masting events,that occur ***,limited rainfall in the late growing season caused a reduction in both organ NSC concentration and individual storage irrespective of masting,which further complicated the masting-NSC *** findings have important implications for interpreting the role of carbon resources in masting events.

Temporal Emplacement Sequence of the South Nam Xe Carbonatites (Northwest Vietnam)

South Nam Xe carbonatites are located in northwest Vietnam and include calcio-and ferro-carbonatite *** investigation on their petrography,mineralogy and whole rock chemistry aims to constrain temporal emplacement sequence of the carbonatites during their *** calciocarbonatites are supposed to be formed in the first or second stage due to massive coarse-grained texture with an assemblage of calcite,typical magmatic alkaline silicates(aegirine,arfvedsonite),biotite,fluorapatite and *** calcites show a high CaO/(MgO+Fe_(2)O_(3)+MnO)ratio and a predominance of SrO over MnO(SrO=3.81-3.98 wt.%;MnO=0.66-0.78 wt.%).Rare earth elements(REE)tend to participate in rock-forming minerals rather than in isolated REE *** ferrocarbonatites are composed of magmatic and hydrothermal varieties and assumed to be formed in the third and/or fourth *** minerals of the former include zoned ankerite,Sr-rich calcite,subhedral feldspar crystals,phlogopite and magnetite;fluorapatite,monazite and REE carbonates are minor resulting in a moderate REE concentration of 43,200 ***,the latter is predominant by syntax-texture REE fluorcarbonates and(Ba,Sr)***,the highest REE concentration(163,900 ppm)of the rock coupled with abundance of volatile minerals(fluorite,fluorcarbonates,sulphides)and ^(18)O enrichment in the calcites(δ^(18)O_(V-SMOW)=12.01-13.26‰)is probably attributed to hydrothermal subjection in the last stage.
