The aggressive invasion of exotic reptiles in Florida with a focus on prominent species： A review

Florida, along with Hawaii, has among the two worst invasive species problems in the USA, and the state is espe-cially susceptible to establishment by alien reptiles. Besides the large numbers of established non-native reptile species in Florida, many of these species present novel difficulties for management, or have.other characteristics making effective management ex-tremely challenging. Moreover, initiation of management action requires more than recognition by experts that a potentially harmful species has become established. It also requires the political will along with concomitant resources and appropriate per-sonnel to develop effective methods and apply them. We review the situation in Florida, including assessment of risk for estab- lishment, and we use a subset of prominent species to illustrate in more detail the array of invasive reptile species circumstances in Florida, including routes of introduction, impacts, and potential and implemented management actions. These examples not only highlight the severity of the invasive reptile problems in the state, but they also show the diversity in resolve and response towards them and the motivating factors [Current Zoology 57 （5）： 599-612, 2011].

RAB guanosine triphosphatases （GTPases） are key regulators of vesicle trafficking and are essential to the growth and development of all eukaryotic cells. During evolution, the RAB family has expanded in different patterns to facilitate distinct cellular, developmental and physiological adaptations. Yeast has only 11 family members, whereas mammalian RABs have.expanded to 18 RAB subfamilies. Plant RABs have.diversified primarily by duplicating members within a single subfamily. Plant RABs are divided into eight subfamilies, corresponding to mammalian RAB1, RAB2, RAB5, RAB6, RAB7, RAB8, RAB11 and RAB18. Functional diversification of these is exemplified by the RAB1 ls, orthologs of which are partitioned into unique cell compartments in plants where they function to transport vesicles during localized tip growth. Similarly, the RAB2 family in grasses is likely involved in vesicle secretion associated with wall expansion, as determined by analysis of over-expression mutants. We propose that dicots and monocots have.also diverged in their RAB profiles to accommodate unique cellular functions between the two groups. Here we present a bioinformatics analysis comparing the RAB sub-families of rice, maize and Arabidopsis. These results will guide future functional studies to test for the role of diversification of subfamilies unique to monocots compared to dicots.

Aims Acorn weevils(Curculio spp.),endoparasitic granivorous insects,impede recruitment of fagaceous trees,and in turn affect community structure and ecosystem *** studies have.made considerable progress in elucidating local factors that contribute to seed predation by acorn weevils,but it is still not clear how habitat configurations interplay with local factors in influencing Curculio *** this study,we assessed the roles of crop size,landscape configurations(area and isolation)and their interactions on the predation rate of seeds by acorn *** We studied acorn weevils feeding on the seeds of Castanopsis sclerophylla(Fagaceae)on two peninsulas and nine islands with varying areas and isolation levels in the Thousand-island Lake in Chun’an County,Zhejiang Province of ***,crop size was estimated for 130 trees and predation status was assessed for 26207 seeds from these trees during two *** linear mixed models were performed to clarify how island area and isolation interplayed with crop size to determine predation rate on a single *** Findings A negative relationship was detected between crop size and seed predation rate,indicating predator satiation at the tree *** suggests that acorn weevils tend to stay sedentary once they have.arrived at a suitable *** fragmentation had significant effects on seed predation such that predation rate was higher on larger,less isolated ***,the relationship between crop size and predation rate was significantly changed by both island area and *** finding highlighted that the effects of habitat isolation might be overlooked relative to those of habitat loss.

Growing Threat of Rapidly-Intensifying Tropical Cyclones in east Asia

This study examines the long-term change in the threat of landfalling tropical cyclones(TCs) in east Asia over the period 1975–2020 with a focus on rapidly intensifying(RI) TCs. The increase in the annual number of RI-TCs over the western North Pacific and the northwestward shift of their genesis location lead to an increasing trend in the annual number of landfalling RI-TCs along the coast of east Asia. The annual power dissipation index(PDI), a measure of the destructive potential of RI-TCs at landfall, also shows a significant increasing trend due to increases in the annual frequency and mean landfall intensity of landfalling RI-TCs. The increase in mean landfall intensity is related to a higher lifetime maximum intensity(LMI) and the LMI location of the landfalling RI-TCs being closer to the coast. The increase in the annual PDI of east Asia is mainly associated with landfalling TCs in the southern(the Philippines, South China, and Vietnam) and northern parts(Japan and the Korean Peninsula) of east Asia due to long-term changes in vertical wind shear and TC heat potential. The former leads to a northwestward shift of favorable environments for TC genesis and intensification, resulting in the northwestward shift in the genesis, RI, and LMI locations of RI-TCs. The latter provides more heat energy from the ocean for TC intensification, increasing its chances to undergo RI.

Automatic identification and detection of fruit on trees by machine vision is the basis of developing automatic harvesting robots in *** occlusion of branches,leave. and other fruits in canopy images will affect the accuracy of fruit *** provide a scientific and reliable technical guidance for fruit harvesting robots,a method using point cloud images was proposed in this study to detect red fruits to overcome the impact of occlusion on ***,the fruit regions were segmented from a tree’s point cloud by applying the color threshold of red and ***,the noise in fruit point clouds was removed with sparse outlier ***,the point cloud of each fruit was detected and counted based on the subtractive clustering *** the sweet pepper dataset,the true positive rate(TPR)is 90.69%and the false positive rate(FPR)is 6.97%for all fruits that are at least partially visible in the scene.

SWAT Model Application to Assess the Impact of Intensive Corn-farming on Runoff, Sediments and Phosphorous loss from an Agricultural Watershed in Wisconsin

The potential future increase in corn-based biofuel may be expected to have.a negative impact on water quality in streams and lakes of the Midwestern US due to increased agricultural chemicals usage. This study used the SWAT model to assess the impact of continuous-corn farming on sediment and phosphorus loading in Upper Rock River watershed in Wisconsin. It was assumed that farmers in the area where corn was rotated with soybean would progressively skip soybean for continuous corn as corn became more profitable. Simulations using SWAT indicated that conversion of corn-soybean to corn-corn-soybean would cause 11% and 2% increase in sediment yield and TP loss, respectively. The conversion of corn-soybean to continuous corn caused 55% and 35% increase in sediment yield and TP loss, respectively. However, this increase could be mitigated by applying various BMPs and/or conservation practices such as conservation tillage, fertilizer management and vegetative buffer strips. The conversion to continuous corn tilled with conservation tillage reduced sediment yield by 2% and did not change TP loss. Increase in P fertilizer amount was roughly proportional to increase in TP loss and 11% more TP was lost when fertilizer was applied four months before planting. Vegetative buffer strips, 15 to 30 m wide, around corn farms reduced sediment yield by 51 to 70% and TP loss by 41 to 63%.

The Poso Depression provides a record of Plio-Pleistocene environments and palaeogeography of Central ***-based sedimentological and provenance studies suggest that during the Pliocene the Poso Depression was a sea channel connecting Gorontalo and Bone bays formed in an asymmetric *** Pliocene history began with deposition of the Puna Formation with fan deltas at the eastern basin margin and channel complexes in the deep-water basin further *** of light and heavy minerals indicate the main sediment source was ultrabasic rocks in east Sulawesi with minor and intermittent magmatic and metamorphic input from West ***,in the Middle to Late Pliocene,carbonates of the Poso Formation accumulated on the eastern basin *** are unconformably overlain by shallow marine glaucophane-rich siliciclastics of the Pleistocene Lage Formation that are associated with the rapid exhu-mation and uplift of the Pompangeo metamorphic *** uplift led to the development of a land bridge connecting western and eastern *** terrane evolution favoured increasing the area of exposed land due to rapid tectonic uplift,which when combined with the tropical climate,contributed to faunal speciation and dispersal in Sulawesi.

Objective:To characterize complex multimorbidity among cancer survivors and evaluate the association between cancer survivorship,time since cancer diagnosis,and self-reported fair/poor health,self-rated worse health in 2 years,and 2-year ***:We used the 2010-2012 Health and Retirement *** survivors were indi-viduals who reported a(nonskin)cancer diagnosis 2 years or more before the *** defined complex multimorbidity as the co-occurrence of chronic conditions,functional limitations,and/or geriatric *** addition to descriptive analyses,we used logistic regression to evaluate the independent association between cancer survivor status and health *** also examined whether cancer survivorship differed by the number of years since ***:Among 15,808 older adults(age≥50 years),11.8%were cancer *** with cancer-free individuals,a greater percentage of cancer survivors had complex multimorbidity:co-occurring chronic conditions,functional limitations,and geriatric *** survivor-ship was significantly associated with self-reported fair/poor health,self-rated worse health in 2 years,and 2-year *** effects declined with the number of years since diagnosis for fair/poor health and mortality but not for self-rated worse ***:Cancer survivor status is independently associated with more complex multi-morbidity,and with worse health *** effects attenuate with time,except for patient perception of being in worse health.
