Effect of Talus Deposit Excavations on Hydrogeochemical characteristics of Kuvars Spring Water, Maltepe, Istanbul, Turkey

Spring waters consumed for drinking purposes should be clean and quality. These waters with balanced mineral distribution, which do not contain organic substances, whose physical and chemical caharacteristics comply with certain quality parameters and which do not negatively affect human health are identified as healthy water. Kuvars water is a spring water which is pumped out from the draw well at the camurluk stream basin of Maltepe province of Istanbul and filled into bottles. The camurluk stream basin is approximately 4.5 km2. The camurluk stream basin is sedimentary rocks and talus deposit outcrops. Reaching of trace elements, which is found more in the talus deposit samples than outcropping quartzarenite at the basin, to underground aquifer as ions under effect of rains, water rock interaction, leakage and filtration, is prevented by illite type clay levels existing within the talus deposit stack, which have upto 20 cm thickness. However, negative effects of the excavation that were made at the talus deposit reflect on the hydrologic cycle and chemical compositions of well waters. This effect was at first negatively affected the physical characteristics of the well waters. During the rainy periods, the water in the excavated area which was enriched with respect to the suspended sediments was percolated into the groundwaters from the joints and cracks of the quartzarenite. The turbidity value measured in the well waters of K2 and K3 were determined as 40.3 NTU and 34.2 NTU respectively. Although at the basin, the aquifer of underground water and the well waters being managed are quartzarenite, the fact that water types belonging to well waters differ (they are not same) according to the Piper diagram and when the heavy metal content of the water of well numbered KS1 is taken as basis, that some heavy metals such as Al3+, Fe2+, Ni2+, Mn2+ and cu2+ be enriched 3 to 40 times in KS2 and KS3 well waters, are caused by talus deposit—water interaction at the excavatio

This work aimed to evaluate the physical-chemical characteristics of pork from a local breed （Portuguese black pork called Preto Alentejano） and a commercial breed. Sixteen animals were used, 4 females and 4 males from each breed. Animals had 80-100 kg of live weight. The longissimus muscle between the 5th thoracic vertebra and the 10th lumbar vertebra was used in the analysis. Samples were analysed for protein, fat, pigments, ashes, dry mater, water-holding capacity, and texture. Results of fat and pigments contents indicate signiifcant （P〈0.05 and P〈0.01） differences for all treatments. For protein, ashes, dry mater, water-holding capacity and texture, no signiifcant differences were found for sex. In the analysis of fatty acids composition, ten were detected, being the main ones c16：0, c18：0, c16：1, c18：1, c18：2. There was a predominance of monounsaturated fatty acids （MUFA）, followed by saturated （SFA） and polyunsaturated （PUFA）. Differences were signiifcant for sex （P〈0.01） and breed （P〈0.01）. Preto Alentejano breed and females presented the higher percentages of SFA （P〈0.01） and MUFA （P〈0.001） fatty acids. Differences between breeds might be due to breed production system and feed differences.

In brucellosis, visual impairment due to optic nerve involvement is rare, and acute onset visual loss is an unusual presenting feature. We report a 15-y old girl who had pancytopenia and who was admitted to our hospital with acute onset of bilateral blindness and fever. There was no light perception, and anterior segment and fundus examination were normal in both eyes. No other abnormal neurological findings were detected. Increased latencies and decreased amplitudes were found in visual evoked potentials. cranial MR and cT revealed no abnormality. Blood culture was found to be positive for Brucella melitensis. Anti-Brucella treatment and high-dosemetil prednisolonwere given. Pancytopenia completely resolved 5 d after anti-Brucella treatment, and at the end of the third month her complaints about impaired vision were resolved. conclusion: Brucellosis may present with uncommon symptoms in children. Physicians, particularly in areas where the disease is endemic, must consider this in differential diagnosis of a child with acute blindness and pancytopenia.

Esophageal varice eradication results in gastric hemodynamic changes. The aim of this study was to detect the influence of variceal eradication on portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG)and fundal varices and to compare the results of two therapeutic methods (endoscopic variceal ligation and endoscopic sclerotherapy). A total of 114 consecutive patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension who underwent elective endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) (85 patients) or endoscopic sclerotherapy (EST) (29 patients) for obliteration of esophageal varices were selected for this study. Both groups were compared for PHG and fundal varice formation before and after eradication. Fifty-eight (68.2%) patients in the EVL and 18 (62.1%) patients in the EST group had PHG before esophageal varice eradication (P > 0.05). PHG grade after eradication of esophageal varices by both EVL and EST was significantly higher compared to preeradication. PHG grade and aggregation were similar in both groups. Thirty-seven patients (34 F1, 3 F2) in the EVL group and 13 patients (10 F1, 3 F2) in the EST group had fundal varices before variceal eradication (P > 0.05). Fundal varices were detected in 46 (35 F1, 11F2) and 19 (11F1, 8F 2) patients in the EVL and EST groups after eradication, respectively. There was a statistically significant increment in occurrence of fundal varices after eradication with EVL and EST groups. There was no significant difference regarding fundal varice development after esophageal variceal eradication in both groups. After varical eradication, PHG was found in 57 (87.7%) and 39 (79.6%) patients with and without fundal varices, respectively (P > 0.05). Esophageal eradication with EVL and EST increases both the incidence and the severity of PHG and fundal varice formation. Both methods have comparable influences on PHG and fundal varices.

The aim of this studywas to evaluate the relationship between inflammation and development of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with *** A total of 65 patients with newly diagnosed hyperthyroidism, 35 of whom were in sinus rhythm and 30 of whom in AF. Thirty five age- and gender-matched patients in a control group were included in the study. Factors associated with the development of AF were evaluated by multivariate regression analysis. Results Factors associated with AF in multivariate analysis included high sensitivity c reactive protein (HscRP) [odds ratio (OR): 11.19; 95% confidence interval (95% cI): 1.80–69.53; P = 0.003],free T4 (OR: 8.76; 95% cI: 2.09–36.7; P = 0.003), and left atrial diameter (OR: 1.25; 95% cI: 1.06–1.47; P = 0.008). conclusions The results of the present study suggest that HscRP, an indicator of inflammation, free T4 and left atrial diameter are associated with the development AF in patients with hyperthyroidism.
