Background: Mutations in polymerase γcause progressive external ophthalmopleg ia and a variety of associated symptoms and signs, including neuropathy, ataxia, hypogonadism, hearing loss, muscle weakness, and psychiatric problems. Extrapyr amidal signs have been rarely described. Objective: To describe a family with a novel polymerase γ.mutation and autosomal dominant transmission of progressive external ophthalmoplegia, neuropathy, hypogonadism, and parkinsonism. Design: Ca se report. Patients: The proband, a 49 year old woman with incipient parkinson ism, and her 59 year old brother with overt parkinsonian features. Main Outcom e Measures: Mutation in the proband by sequencing the polymerase γgene and in a ffected relatives by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Results: We found multiple mitochondrial DNA deletions in the proband’s muscle and a no vel missense mutation in the polymerase γgene (A2492G) in the proband and in he r affected siblings. Conclusion: Parkinsonism was a prominent clinical feature i n this family with autosomal dominant ophthalmoplegia, multiple mitochondrial DN A deletions, and a novel mutation in the polymerase γgene.

The preparation method of a new kind of SnO2-CdO-WO3 linear NTC (negative temperature coefficient) thermal sensitive ceramics was related in this paper. The electron transfer formula of this N type semiconducting ceramics was given. Factors which affect temperature- resistance characteristic curve, such as the composition of the material, heat treatment condition, the speed of the temperature rising, heat preservation time and sintering atmosphere were thoroughly studied and analyzed.

Background: The mitochondrial DNA gene encoding subunit 5 of complex I (ND5) has turned out to be a hot spot for mutations associated with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and strokelike episodes (MELAS) and various overlap syndromes. Objective: To describe a novel mutation in the ND5 gene in a young man man with an overlap syndrome of MELAS and myoclonus epilepsy with ragged-red fibers. Design: Case report. Patient: A 25-year-old man had recurrent strokes, seizures, and myoclonus. His mother also had multiple strokes. A muscle biopsy specimen showed no ragged-red fibers but several strongly succinate dehydrogenasereactive blood vessels. Results: Biochemical analysis showed isolated complex I deficiency and molecular analysis revealed a novel heteroplasmic mutatio n (G13042A) in the ND5 gene. Conclusions: These data confirm that ND5 is a genet ic hot spot for overlap syndromes, including MELAS and strokelike and myoclonus epilepsy with ragged-red fibers.

In this paper we investigate the existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solution of semilinear parabolic equations with coefficients that are discontinuous across the interface, some prior estimates are obtained. A net shape of the finite elements around the singular points was designed in [7] to solve the linear elliptic problems, by means of that net, we prove that the approximate solution has the same convergence rate as that without singularity.

Intensity index series of Subtropical High over the Western Pacific was constructed according to modeling results by using of CCM3.6 atmospheric model with cli-matologically SST forcing for 30 years, and with observed SST forcing from 1900 to 2000. The index series constructed by modeling closely correlated to the observations for 1951-1999 (c.c. 0.72) and to the statistically reconstructed one for 1900-1950 (c.c. 0.51). The index series for 1900-1999 showed significant 80 a and 40 a periodicity. A minimum of persistence in seasonal variations of the index occurred in Autumn, which was called 'Autumn Barrier'. It may relate to the 'Spring Barrier', found in the seasonal variations of SST over the Eastern Equatorial Pacific. The increasing trend shown in the index series for the 20th century may associate with the global warming caused by enhancement of greenhouse effect.

Neurofilaments (NFs) were isolated from bovine spinal cord. The structure of purified NFs was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The STM images showed that NF was composed of a long core filament and numerous sidearms flanking the rod regularly. The diameter of the rod was about 10 nm (10.2±0.8 nm). Most of the sidearms were short and the distance between two adjacent sidearms was approximately 10 nm. There were some long sidearms between two proximal core filaments. The distance between two adjacent long sidearms was 21 nm. A three-quarter-staggered fashion of native NF structure was put forward.

A novel solid state cathodoluminescence(SSCL) device(the device has a structure of ITO/SiO2/Alq3/SiO2/Al) is fabricated using organic materials as the fluorescent film sandwiched between two SiO2 *** alternating current(AC) voltage is applied to this device,uniform emissions are *** the voltage is 50 V,a longer wavelength emission(522 nm) is obtained,but the shorter wavelength emission(465 nm) is dominant when the voltage is 76 *** origins of these emissions are *** interface formed between SiO2 and tris-(8-hydroquinoline) aluminum(Alq3) of SSCL device was investigated by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).Analyses of the XPS spectra reveal a deep diffusion of the indium into the *** the other hand,the interaction between indium and Alq3 occurs at the interface and results in the formation of a carbon-oxygen-metal(In or Al) complex in the contact *** effect causes a luminescence quenching in the SSCL device.

The toxic chemicals from the database Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) were analyzed by structural similarity comparison, which shows that the structure patterns or characteristics of toxic chemicals exist in a sufficiently large database. Then, a two-step strategy was proposed to explore noncongeneric toxic chemicals in the database: the screening of structure patterns by similarity comparison and the derivation of detailed relationship between structure and activity by using comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) of Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) technologies. From the performance of the procedure, such a stepwise scheme is demonstrated to be feasible and effective to mine a database of toxic chemicals. It can be anticipated that database mining of toxic chemicals will be a new area for predictive toxicology of chemicals.

Glycyrrhizic acid(GA) in Glycyrrhiza uralensis(***) is physiologically *** this study,the total DNA of wild *** was randomly transformed into Hansenula anomala by implantation of low-energy Ar^+ and N^+,to produce five recombinant yeast strains relating to biological synthesis of the GA or Glycyrrhetinic acid (GAs).After culturing in liquid medium for 96 h,the resultant GA,18α-GAs and 18β-Gas were determined by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography(RP-HPLC),and the corresponding concentrations were 114.49,0.56,and 0.81 mg·L^(-1).After one hundred primers were analyzed with random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD),the seven different DNA fragments were produced by the N7059 strain of recombined yeasts,and,the polymerase chain reaction(PCR) verified that one of them came from the genome of ***,indicating a successful transfer of genetic information by ion implantation.
