Plant-available water capacity of soils at a regional scale:Analysis of fixed and dynamic field capacities

Estimation of the plant-available water capacity(PAWC)of soils at a regional scale helps in adopting better land use planning,developing suitable irrigation schedules for crops,and optimizing the use of scarce water *** the current study,72 soil profiles were sampled from the Barossa region of South Australia to estimate pedo-transfer functions deduced from easily estimated soil *** functions were then used to estimate the fixed(10 and 33 kPa)and dynamic pressure head(h_(fc))water contents at field capacity(FC)for minimum drainage flux(0.01 and 0.001 cm d^(-1)),which serves as the upper boundary for plant-available water in *** estimated residual water content was corrected for subsoil constraints,especially the exchangeable sodium percentage(ESP).The results showed that the mean values of h_(fc)in sand-dominated light and medium textured soils(i.e.,sand,loamy sand,sandy loam,and loam)varied in a narrow range(15.8-18.2 kPa),whereas those in the clay-dominated heavy textured soils(i.e.,clay loam)showed a wide range(11.3-49.3 kPa).There were large differences in PAWC for dynamic FC(PAWC_(fc))and fixed FC at 10 kPa(PAWC10),33 kPa(PAWC33),and a mix of 10and 33 kPa(PAWC_(10,33))pressure heads depending on soil ***,the difference between PAWC at 10 kPa and h_(fc)(ΔPAWC_(10))was positive,whereas that between 33 kPa and h_(fc)(ΔPAWC_(33))was negative across all ***,the estimation of PAWC assuming a fixed FC at 10 and 33 kPa pressures(i.e.,PAWC_(10,33))for sandy,clay,and silty soils reduced the difference between fixed and dynamic pressure PAWCs to<10% across the *** estimation of PAWC was improved by incorporating the impact of subsoil constraints,such as high ESP,which was more pronounced for clay and silty *** findings demonstrate the inherent inconsistencies between static pressure and flux-based dynamic FC estimations in *** heterogeneity,intra-texture variability,subsoil constraints,and swell

Solar energy harvesting includes active high temperature hydronic evacuated tubular collectors,photovoltaic electric generation,passive direct gain sunspaces and maximum *** are space heating,absorption cooling,dehumidification and domestic hot *** systems include seasonally adjusted radiant heating and cooling and *** architecture provides thermal mass static storage and unitized hot and chilled water storage that provides sufficient thermal inertia within each living unit to provide necessary interior climate control in excess of one day during peak thermal demand conditions. The site ground is coupled with the solar building systems through implementation of a closed loop geo-thermal field. Ground loop application will include seasonal warm thermal storage and direct water cooling assist to the solar driven absorption cooling and dehumidification. Air flow through building spaces is provided by free flow passage of air from north to south in all spaces of all units and vertical natural chimney *** air quality is governed by enthalpy recovery systems dedicated to each living unit that provide for air changes as dictated by use. FDA MAUDE database analysis of titanium middle ear prosthesis

Purpose:Partial ossicular replacement(PORP)and total ossicular replacement prostheses(TORP)are used to restore ossicular chain *** favorable auditory outcomes,these interventions have associated risks and *** study examines the FDA MAUDE database for ossicular chain prosthesis adverse events to highlight complications,interventions,and root cause analysis(RCA)*** and methods:The MAUDE database was searched for Medical Device Reports(MDRs)relating to PORPs and TORPs from 2010 to *** event descriptions were reviewed,and adverse events were identified as a device issue,patient issue,and/or packaging issue that occurred intraoperatively or ***:Our search identified 70 MDRs which included 110 reported adverse *** consisted of 63 device issues,often due to device breaks and displacements,39 patient issues,including common complaints of hearing loss and erosion,and 8 packaging *** comparing PORPs and TORPs,TORPs had more reported device issues whereas PORPs had more packaging *** device issues were commonly resolved by completing the procedure with a backup device and most postoperative device issues required additional *** devices returned to the manufacturer,RCA determined that most breaks were caused by modification and/or mishandling or that the product met specifications with an undetermined cause for the ***:Device issues were the most common adverse events and frequently required subsequent *** occurred more often with TORPs and was associated with changes in hearing or *** findings of this study are purely descriptive and may not have direct clinical relevance.

Ram sperm motility after intermittent scrotal insulation evaluated by manual and computer-assisted methods

Clinical trials in otology:Examining trends and framework for prioritization

Objective:To characterize otologic clinical trials and examine otologic clinical trial trends from 2008 to 2018 using the *** ***:Data was collected from *** and included all clinical trials that focused on otology from 2008 to *** measures include status of trials,funding sources,details regarding otologic conditions studied,and trends in clinical ***:There were 992 otology clinical trials from 2008 to 2018.457(46.1%)were completed and 94(9.5%)were *** remained the highest(76.5%)contributor to otology clinical *** otologic conditions studied,from most common to least common,include hearing loss(40.6%),vestibulopathy(18.8%),tinnitus(18.8%),and otitis media(15.1%).The number of otology clinical trials increased by an average of 12.0 trials per year from 2008 to 2018(p<0.001).The number of otology clinical trials focusing on hearing loss and vestibulopathy significantly increased over the studied period(p<0.001),while those focusing on tinnitus and otitis media did not(p=0.09 and p=0.20,respectively).The majority of clinical trials on each of these four conditions focused on treatment ***:Our study describes trends in otology clinical trials registered on *** from 2008 through *** total number of clinical trials over this time period increased significantly,driven by trials investigating hearing loss and ***,most clinical trials were industrysponsored and focused on treatment *** study provides an outline of otology clinical trials registered in a US web-based database,which may be of use for the development of future clinical trials.

Opioid prescribing patterns within otolaryngology

Objective:Determine current opioid prescribing patterns for adult procedures within an academic Otolaryngology-head and Neck Surgery training program in order to establish a general guideline and more uniform approach to narcotic prescribing ***:The is a prospective,single-center pilot *** online,anonymous survey was sent to all members of the Otolaryngology-head and Neck Surgery training program at Medical University of South Carolina including residents,fellows,and attending surgeons,and advanced practice providers (APP).The survey consisted of questions including demographics,most commonly prescribed analgesic and the average number of opioid tablets prescribed postoperatively for eleven of the most common adult procedures within ***:Forty-two participants responded to the *** the 42 respondents,20 were attending surgeons,11 junior level residents (year 1-3),6 senior level residents (year 4-5),and 5 *** most commonly prescribed narcotic was hydrocodone-acetaminophen with 83.3% (35/42) of respondents prescribing this *** or uvulopalatopharyngoplasty had the highest average number of tablets prescribed at 32.3 (Range:5 to 90).Neck dissection,parotidectomy,and thyroidectomy procedures all averaged over 20 *** laryngoscopy opioid dose was the lowest at 4.8 tablets (range 0-20).Opioid prescriptions by surgery were broken down by provider class with only septoplasty showing a significant difference with attending physicians prescribing an average of 20 tablets vs 14.1 tablets for residents (P =0.034).Conclusion:We believe there remains an unacceptably high variability in current opioid prescribing patterns within otolaryngology especially within more painful *** of standardized post-operative narcotic guidelines is warranted.
