Climate refugia can serve as a remnant habitat or stepping stones for species dispersal under climate *** largest freshwater lake by surface area,Lake Superior,USA and Canada,serves as a model system for understanding cooling-mediated local refugia,as its cool water temperatures and wave action have maintained shoreline habitats suitable for southern disjunct populations of arctic-alpine plants since ***,we seek to explain spatial patterns and environmental drivers of arctic-alpine plant refugia along Lake Superior’s shores,and assess future risk to refugia under moderate(+3.5℃)and warmest(+5.7℃)climate warming ***,we examined how the interactive effects of summer surface water temperatures and wind affected onshore temperatures,resulting in areas of cooler ***,we developed an ecological niche model for the presence of disjunct arctic-alpine refugia(pooling 1253 occurrences from 58 species)along the lake’s ***,we fit species distribution models for 20 of the most common arctic-alpine disjunct species and predicted presence to identify refugia ***,we used the two climate warming scenarios to predict changes in the presence of refugia and disjunct *** type,elevation above water,inland distance,July land surface temperature from MODIS/Terra satellite and near-shore depth of water were the best predictors of disjunct ***,we predicted 2236 km of the shoreline(51%)as disjunct refugia habitat for at least one species under current conditions,but this was reduced to 20% and 7% with moderate(894 km)and warmest(313 km)climate change projections.

Older adults in disaster contexts are often thought of as a passive, vulnerable population that lacks agency and capacities to cope in the aftermath. However, it can be argued that older adults may have underrecognized strengths that can be utilized pre-, peri-, and post-disaster. One of these strengths is older adults' unique social capital that stems from long-standing connections with other members of their respective communities. Using data from in-depth, semistructured interviews with farmers in British Columbia 3–11 months after the 2021 floods, this research explored the experiences of older adult farmers' recovery. The farmers discussed how they leveraged their social capital to aid in their recovery efforts from the flood event. By using their bonding social capital, older adult farmers transformed their existing, deep-rooted connections into post-disaster assistance. This, in turn, generated the idea of the therapeutic community, helping community members cope in the aftermath. This research indicated the need to further examine how older adults in disaster settings can be viewed as assets with community knowledge and skills as opposed to solely as a vulnerable population.

Nowadays,the design of fixed packed bed reactors still relies on empirical correlations,which,especially for small tube to particle diameter ratios,are mostly too inaccurate because of the presence of wall ***,the simulation of fixed packed bed reactors plays an important role to predict and control the flow and process parameters in such,nowadays and in the *** of its straightforward applicability to non-uniform packings with particles of arbitrary shapes,the immersed boundary method(IBM)has advantages over other numerical methods and is used more and more *** paper compares two approaches of IBMs for the simulation of fixed bed reactors with spherical shaped *** classic,smooth approach is compared to the straightforward to implement blocked-off method for velocity fields above the fixed bed for particle Reynolds numbers of 300 and *** from experimental inline PIV-measurements of the reactor to be simulated serve as a basis for *** good agreement with the experiment is found for both simulation methodologies with higher resolutions,considering the more stable flow at a particle Reynolds number of *** in the different IBM approaches occurred for the more unsteady flow at a particle Reynolds number of *** to the blocked-off method,the smooth IBM reflects the formation of additional jets and recirculation zones better right above the bed,though increasing the fluid mesh resolution improves the accuracy of the blocked-off ***,a more diffusive behaviour is found for the blocked-off simulations due to the stairstep representation,which is avoided by using interpolation stencils as in the smooth *** higher mesh refinement in the blocked-off IBM this effect can be reduced,but this also increases the computational effort.

InGaN/GaN micro-light-emitting diodes(micro-LEDs)with a metal–insulator-semiconductor(MIS)structure on the sidewall are proposed to improve *** this MIS structure,a sidewall electrode is deposited on the insulating layer-coated sidewall of the device mesa between a cathode on the bottom and an anode on the ***(EL)measurements of fabricated devices with a mesa diameter of 10μm show that the application of negative biases on the sidewall electrode can increase the device external quantum efficiency(EQE).In contrast,the application of positive biases can decrease the *** band structure analysis reveals that the EQE is impacted because the application of sidewall electric fields manipulates the local surface electron density along the mesa sidewall and thus controls surface Shockley–Read–Hall(SRH)*** suggested strategies,reducing insulator layer thickness and exploring alternative materials,can be implemented to further improve the EQE of MIS micro-LEDs in future fabrication.

As wearable electronic devices are rapidly developing,there is an urgent need for lightweight,flexible,and ultrathin multifunctional electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding ***,the flexible ultrathin paper that combines efficient shielding and multifunctional integration remains a considerable ***,a novel MXene/Fe_(3)O_(4)@CNTs/TOCNF(MCT,MXene=transition metal carbide/carbonitride,CNTs=carbon nanotubes,TOCNF=TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber,TEMPO=2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical)nanocomposite paper with a multilayer electromagnetic gradient structure and electromagnetic dual losses was successfully prepared by a simple filtration *** from effective gradient design and adjusting the proportion of TOCNF,the composite paper(only 18μm)exhibits outstanding shielding effectiveness(SE)of 66 dB in the X-band,ultrahigh thickness-specific SE and surface-specific SE values of 3300 dB·mm-1 and 31,428 dB·cm^(2)·g^(-1)***,dehydroxylation treatment improves MCT paper's hydrophobicity,environmental stability,and mechanical strength,expanding its range of ***,the highly efficient Joule heating properties and hydrophobicity provide MCT additional de-icing *** also simulated the electromagnetic shielding effects of MCT composite paper,which was applied in *** study documents an innovative and intriguing material combination,providing a simple and effective manufacturing strategy for developing EMI shielding *** paper is highly suitable for outdoor portable or wearable electronic devices and has significant application potential in humid/severe cold environments.

This research paper presents a comprehensive discrete element method(DEM)examination of the mixing behaviors exhibited by cohesive particles within a twin-paddle blender.A comparative analysis between the simulation and experimental results revealed a relative error of 3.47%,demonstrating a strong agreement between the results from the experimental tests and the DEM *** main focus centers on systematically exploring how operational parameters,such as impeller rotational speed,blender's fill level,and particle mass ratio,influence the *** investigation also illustrates the significant influence of the mixing time on the mixing *** gain a deeper understanding of the DEM simulation findings,an analytical tool called multivariate polynomial regression in machine learning is *** method uncovers significant connections between the DEM results and the operational parameters,providing a more comprehensive insight into their *** multivariate polynomial regression model exhibited robust predictive performance,with a mean absolute percentage error of less than 3%for both the training and validation sets,indicating a slight deviation from actual *** model's precision was confirmed by low mean absolute error values of 0.0144(80%of the dataset in the training set)and 0.0183(20%of the dataset in the validation set).The study offers valuable insights into granular mixing behaviors,with implications for enhancing the efficiency and predictability of the mixing processes in various industrial applications.

Reacting particle systems play an important role in many industrial applications,for example biomass drying or the manufacturing of *** numerical modeling and simulation of such systems is therefore of great importance for an efficient,reliable,and environmentally sustainable operation of the *** complex thermodynamical,chemical,and flow processes that take place in the particles are a particular challenge in a ***,typically a large number of particles is involved,rendering an explicit treatment of individual ones impossible in a reactor-level *** approach for overcoming this challenge is to compute effective,physical parameters from single-particle,high-resolution *** can be combined with model reduction methods if the dynamical behaviour of particles must be *** network models with their unrivaled resolution have thereby been used successfully as high-resolution models,for instance to obtain the macroscopic diffusion coeffcient of *** parameter identification and model reduction have recently gained new impetus by the dramatic progress made in machine learning in the last *** report results on the use of neural networks for parameter identification and model reduction based on three-dimensional pore network models(PNM).We believe that our results provide a powerful complement to existing methodologies for reactor-level simulations with many thermally-thick particles.
