The potential future increase in corn-based biofuel may be expected to have.a negative impact on water quality in streams and lakes of the Midwestern US due to increased agricultural chemicals usage. This study used the SWAT model to assess the impact of continuous-corn farming on sediment and phosphorus loading in Upper Rock River watershed in Wisconsin. It was assumed that farmers in the area where corn was rotated with soybean would progressively skip soybean for continuous corn as corn became more profitable. Simulations using SWAT indicated that conversion of corn-soybean to corn-corn-soybean would cause 11% and 2% increase in sediment yield and TP loss, respectively. The conversion of corn-soybean to continuous corn caused 55% and 35% increase in sediment yield and TP loss, respectively. However, this increase could be mitigated by applying various BMPs and/or conservation practices such as conservation tillage, fertilizer management and vegetative buffer strips. The conversion to continuous corn tilled with conservation tillage reduced sediment yield by 2% and did not change TP loss. Increase in P fertilizer amount was roughly proportional to increase in TP loss and 11% more TP was lost when fertilizer was applied four months before planting. Vegetative buffer strips, 15 to 30 m wide, around corn farms reduced sediment yield by 51 to 70% and TP loss by 41 to 63%.

Introduction: In the Pacific Northwest of North America, research addressing lentic-breeding amphibian populationvulnerability has emphasized aquatic habitats, frequently neglecting terrestrial habitats. Consequently, wetlandprotection and restoration often fails to preserve or restore adjacent uplands required by lentic-breeding *** to the juxtaposition and connectivity of uplands to wetlands could locally extirpate lentic-breedingamphibians. The objective of this research is to identify the relative importance of juxtaposed terrestrial and aquatichabitats in a lentic-breeding amphibian, the northern red-legged frog (Rana aurora), by evaluating the relationshipbetween its occurrence and abundance with its aquatic and terrestrial habitats. To accomplish this, egg mass countswere used to quantify R. aurora populations in 30 stillwater habitats across an urbanization gradient. Using aGeographic Information System, seven descriptors of aquatic and surrounding terrestrial habitats were measured toevaluate their relationships to R. aurora occurrence and ***: Rana aurora occurrence and breeding abundance both reflect the forested area around wetland breedingsites and forest connectivity to those sites. Rana aurora breeding abundance also strongly reflects the percent offorested perimeter around wetland breeding sites. The forest habitat most important for R. aurora breeding abundanceseems to be > 200 m from the breeding wetlands. The American bullfrog presence and the two aquatic parametersmeasured, wetland area and vegetated area, were unrelated to R. aurora occurrence and breeding ***: Area and connectivity of juxtaposed forested terrestrial habitat may represent a basic control on R. aurorapresence and population size. Urban development policies should consider preservation and restoration of uplandforest habitats beyond current fixed-width buffers and wetland habitat area at landscape scales.

Cautery-assisted palatal stiffening operation for obstructive sleep apnea: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective:To systematically review outcomes for cautery-assisted palatal stiffening operation (CAPSO) as a treatment for adult obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).Methods:Five databases (including PubMed/MEDLINE) were searched through July 12,***:Eight studies (307 patients) met ***,CAPSO alone (80 patients) improved AHI from a mean ± standard deviation (M±SD) of (16.8±11.9) to (9.9±10.9) events/h (41.1% decrease).Mixed CAPSO with/without tonsillectomy (92 patients) improved AHI from a M] SD of (24.8 ± 12.6) to (10.6 ± 9.5) events/h (61.7% decrease).CAPSO with expansion pharyngoplasty (EP),(78 patients) improved AHI from a M ± SD of (26.3 ± 17.7) to (12.6 ± 5.8) events/h (52.1% decrease).CAPSO alone (90 patients) improved lowest oxygen saturation (LSAT) by 5.4 *** CAPSO with/without tonsillectomy (77 patients) improved LSAT by 10.6 points,and CAPSO with EP (78 patients) improved LSAT by 5.2 *** improved (182 patients) from an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score of 11.8 to 5.1,P ave.also improved after CAPSO.
