The influence of silica on reaction rates and molecular hydrogen(H_(2.)generation during olivine hydrothermal alteration

Relationship between seismic structures and the diverse rupture processes of the 2.2. Türkiye earthquake doublet

U-Pb zircon geochronology of basaltic pyroclastic rocks from the basement beneath the Xisha Islands in the northwestern South China sea and its geological significance

As one of the micro-blocks dispersed in the South China sea(SCS), the basement of the Xisha Islands has rarely been drilled because of the thick overlying Cenozoic sediments, which has led to a confused understanding of the pre-Cenozoic basement of the Xisha Islands. Well CK-1, a kilometer-scale major scientific drill in the Xisha Islands in the northwestern SCS, penetrated thick reefal limestone(0–888.4 m) and the underlying basement rocks(888.4–901.4 m). In this study, we present the zircon U-Pb ages of basement basaltic pyroclastic rocks from Well CK-1 in the Xisha Islands of the northwestern SCS to investigate the basement nature of the Xisha microblock. The basement of Well CK-1 consists of basaltic pyroclastic rocks on the seamount. The zircon grains yielded apparent ages ranging from ca. 2.138.9 Ma to ca. 36 Ma. The old group of zircon grains from Well CK-1 was considered to be inherited zircons. Two Cenozoic zircons gave a weighted mean 2.6Pb/2.8U age of(36.3 ± 1.1) Ma,Mean Squared Weighted Deviations(MSWD) = 1.2. which may represent the maximum age of the volcano eruption. The Yanshanian inherited zircons(116.9–105.7 Ma and 146.1–130.2.Ma) from Well CK-1 are consistent with the zircons from Well XK-1, indicating that the basement of Chenhang Island may be similar to that of Well XK-1. We propose that the Xisha micro-block may have developed on a uniform Late Jurassic metamorphic crystalline basement, intruded by Cretaceous granitic magma.

Distribution, burial fluxes and carbon sink effect of sedimentary organic carbon in the eastern China seas

The ocean is the largest active carbon reservoir on Earth. Organic carbon(OC), as the primary species of carbon sequestration in the ocean, plays an important role in the global carbon cycle through its deposition and burial. In this study,sedimentary OC data from 5796 stations, together with relevant geochemical and sedimentological parameters in the Bohai sea,Yellow sea, and East China sea(BYES) were used to summarize and elucidate the distribution and burial patterns of sedimentary OC, and assess carbon sink effect of sedimentary OC burial. The results show that the OC content in the sediments of the BYES ranges from 0.00% to 2.12., with an average content of 0.47%±0.2.%. OC content is significantly correlated with finegrained sediments, with an average OC content in mud areas being 39% higher than that in non-mud areas. Modern OC buried in the BYES are mainly deposited in 7 major mud areas, with a total sedimentary OC burial flux of approximately 8.2. Mt C yr^(–1).Among them, the burial flux of biospheric OC is 6.92.Mt C yr^(–1), equivalent to the OC consumption amount of silicate weathering of the 9 major river basins in the eastern China. In its natural state, the annually sequestered OC in the sediments of the eastern China seas is equivalent to 2..37 Mt of atmospheric CO_(2., indicating a significant carbon sink effect. The distribution and burial of terrigenous OC in the BYES are mainly influenced by the large river inputs and complex marine hydrodynamic environment,while human activities such as dam construction have significantly altered the OC burial in these coastal mud areas.

Detection of a mud volcano in the Weitan Banks area of the northern South China sea

Situated between the petroliferous Cenozoic Zhujiang(Pearl)River Mouth Basin and the mud volcano-rich Mesozoic Dongsha Basin in the middle sector of the northern South China sea,the Weitan Banks area has been previously mapped as a basement high that is composed of Mesozoic magmatic *** this study,we present several favorable indicators for petroleum geology that were detected from geophysical profiling and benthic sampling in the area.A conspicuous hill was discovered,named“Zhongwei Hill”,~80 m high above the~340 m deep seafloor and~1 km broad,in a depression with more than 7 km thick sedimentary *** Zhongwei Hill was seismically imaged with a mushroom-shaped structure and containing a cake-like crown,fluid flow pipes,and an~10 km broad anticline at ***,the hill represents a source-plumbing-eruption *** gas zones linked to deep fracture were found at or near the *** correlation indicates that the deep strata comprise the Jurassic and Paleogene strata,the major hosts of hydrocarbon source *** addition to the hill,there are number of mounds from which three bottom water samples were collected and the samples are rich in dissolved methane with concentrations high up to~900 nmol/L,much higher than the background level(0.5–2.nmol/L).The benthic samples are rich in coarse sediment clastics,authigenic carbonate nodules,and deep-water habitats likely feeding on methanotrophic *** these observations and the context,we propose that the Zhongwei Hill represents a mud volcano,likely thermally driven,that seeps methane from Jurassic and Paleogene source layers,thus poses a favorable clue for significant hydrocarbon generation capacity in transitional zone of the Zhujiang River Mouth Basin and the Dongsha Basin.

On electro-acoustic characteristics of a marine broadband sparker for seismic exploration

The construction of major marine infrastructure projects and the exploration and development of deep-sea mineral resources require fine imaging of seabed strata and *** highresolution marine seismic exploration based on a high broadband sparker source is an important approach to reveal seabed stratum and reservoir structure,and identify *** optimize the performance of sparker seismic source,we investigated the electro-acoustic characteristics of spark discharge under conditions of different charging voltages and electrode *** show that the sound source level increased with the increase of the charging voltage,whereas the main frequency decreased when the charging voltage *** addition,it was found that the charging capacitance had more obvious influence on the main frequency than the sound source level *** the load energy decreased with increasing electrode number,the sound source level still increased but the main frequency ***,the primary to bubble(P/B)ratio increased with the increase of the electrode *** gain a deeper insight into the electro-acoustic characteristics,we investigate the relationship between sound source level and power peak,from which a good correlation was observed.A more practical statistical analysis on the rise rate of current was processed,and a perfect logarithmic function was ***,we found that the main frequency was most possibly subjected to the electrical energy,especially the charging energy per *** results indicate that the charging energy per electrode less than 10 J could increase the main frequency to above 300 *** last,the main frequency could be reduced to 2. Hz when the charging energy of a single-electrode discharge was enhanced to over 4 *** study shall be helpful in developing a sparker seismic source and improving the performance for marine engineering exploration and geohazard assessment.

An assessment of the CMIP6 performance in simulating Arctic sea ice volume flux via Fram Strait

Numerical models serve as an essential tool to investigate the causes and effects of Arctic sea ice *** the simulation capabilities of the most recent CMIP6 models in sea ice volume flux provides references for model applications and ***,reliable long-term simulation results of the ice volume fux contribute to a deeper understanding of the sea ice response to global climate *** this study,the sea ice volume flux through six Arctic gateways over the past four decades(1979-2.14)were estimated in combination of satellite observations of sea ice concentration(SIC)and sea ice motion(SIM)as well as the Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System(PIOMAS)reanalysis sea ice thickness(SIT)*** simulation capability of 17 CMIP6 historical models for the volume flux through Fram Strait were quantitatively *** ice volume flux simulated from the ensemble mean of 17 CMIP6 models demonstrates better performance than that from the individual model,yet IPSL-CM6A-LR and EC-Earth3-Veg-LR outperform the ensemble mean in the annual volume flux,with Taylor scores of 0.86 and 0.50,***6 models display relatively robust capability in simulating the seasonal variations of volume *** them,CESM2.WACCM performs the best,with a correlation coefficient of 0.96 and a Taylor score of ***,NESM3 demonstrates the largest devi-ation from the observation/reanalysis data,with the lowest Taylor score of *** variability of sea ice volume flux is primarily influenced by SIM and SIT,followed by *** extreme large sea ice export through Fram Strait is linked to the occurrence of anomalously low air temperatures,which in turn promote increased SIC and SIT in the corresponding ***,the intensified activity of Arctic cyclones and Arctic dipole anomaly could boost the southward sea ice velocity through Fram Strait,which further enhance the sea ice outflow.
