Extraction of 17β-estradiol in water using non-imprinted polymer submicron particles in membrane filters

17β-Estradiol （E2） is an endocrine disrupting chemical of harm to both animals and human beings at a low concentration level （ng/L）. It cannot be completely removed by wastewater treatments, and is often detected in both environment and drinking waters. The purpose of this feasibility study, towards environmental engineering in the field of water analysis and treatment, was to remove E2 by extraction using non-imprinted polymer （NIP） submicron particles. Experimental results showed that 0.5 mg/L of E2 could be completely extracted by adding 10 mg of NIP particles directly into 10 mL of water. However, the extraction efficiency decreased to 64% for 100 mL of water. prefilling the NIP particles inside a membrane filter showed a potential for water treatment of a large volume, requiring no effort to distribute the particles uniformly in the water. High extraction efficiency （80 ± 10）% for E2 was achieved for 100 mL of water. A total mass of 0.29 mg E2 was extracted from 1000 mL of water containing 0.8 mg/L E2 （by using only 10 mg of NIP particles）. Both efficiency and mass capacity can be increased, by scaling up the amount of NIP particles, towards environmental engineering applications.

Organisms often evolve behaviours that increase or reinforce the protection from predators afforded by their morpho- logical defences. For example, mimetic animals may adopt postures or locomotory behaviours that emulate a characteristic fea- ture of their model to increase predator deception. Caterpillars with eyespots are thought to mimic snakes, and when threatened many of these caterpillars adopt a posture that appears to enhance this resemblance. Herein we evaluate the quantitative strength of evidence of behavioural mimicry in the caterpillars of 14 species by comparing how closely a series of putative snake-mimicking caterpillars resemble snakes while at rest and when threatened. Specifically, we quantified the head morphology and eye position of a range of snake species, as well as the shape of the apparent head （i.e. anterior body segments） and position of eyespots in caterpillars resting or in their defensive posture. This allowed us to objectively examine evidence for an increased resemblance to either snakes generally, or to Viperidae snakes specifically, upon adopting the defensive posture. Widening the anterior body segments during the defensive posture typically made caterpillars appear more viper-like as opposed to more snake-like in general. Enhanced resemblance to vipers upon mounting the defensive posture was apparent only from the dorsal view. Laterally, caterpillars more closely resembled snakes in the resting posture and shifting to the defensive posture instead reduced mimetic fidelity, Overall we found evidence for behavioural mimicry in all 14 species examined. We highlight that objectively quantifying mimetic fidelity can help identify key features involved in deception .

Metabolic rate depression is an important survival strategy for many animal species and a common element of hibernation,torpor,estivation,anoxia and *** of the molecular mechanisms that regulate reversible transitions to and from hypometabolic states have identified principles of regulatory *** control mechanisms are conserved among biologically diverse organisms and include the coordinated reduction of specific groups of key regulatory enzymes or proteins in the cell,a process likely driven by microRNA target repression/*** present review focuses on a growing area of research in hypometabolism and mechanisms involving the rapid and reversible control of translation facilitated by *** analysis draws primarily from current research on three animal models:hibernating mammals,anoxic turtles and freeze-tolerant frogs(with selected examples from multiple other sources).Here,we demonstrate a link between metabolic rate depression,a well-documented response to periods of environmental stress,and microRNA ***-based expression profiles and PCR-driven studies have revealed that specific microRNAs are induced in response to environmental *** members of this group decrease pro-apoptotic signaling,reduce muscle wasting and reduce protein translation,whereas other members contribute to cell cycle arrest and mitogen-activated protein kinase *** of the same microRNAs are frequently deregulated in numerous disease pathologies and,hence,the hypometabolism model could provide a novel approach for the treatment of stroke and heart attack in humans.

A comprehensive simulation-based assessment of office building performance adaptability to teleworking scenarios in different Canadian climate zones

Recent studies have shown that office building systems do not adapt well to partial occupancy(e.g.,from teleworking)and thus perform *** a result,this study aims to assess office building performance adaptability by investigating the impact of four different technologies,including occupancy-based lighting,smart plugs(occupancy-based plug load),demand-controlled ventilation(DCV),occupancy-based thermostat,and their cumulative effect in office buildings in six different Canadian climates.A three-story office building is simulated in EnergyPlus version 9.3.0 under five occupancy scenarios,including 0%occupancy,100%occupancy,50%uniformly distributed occupancy across the floor,50%consolidated occupancy scenario where occupants work in core zones,and 50%consolidated occupancy scenario where occupants work in perimeter *** results are compared using energy use intensity(EUI),energy use intensity per occupant(EUP),and the corresponding greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions.A total of 180 simulations demonstrate the occupancy-adaptive technologies are generally most beneficial for low occupancy scenarios and milder *** results also show the cumulative impact of all these technologies on the potential energy savings is significant in the climates under ***,the results show office buildings can improve their performance adaptability during partial occupancy by implementing the studied *** from filling in the current knowledge gap in the literature on partial occupancy,the for the first time results of this study systemically demonstrate how each technology performs under different partial occupancy scenarios and how they perform together at each climate.

The aqueous polymerization of acrylamide and crosslinking with N,N-methylenebisacrylamide afforded hydrogelsdisplaying high levels of light scattering (poor optical clarity). Enhancement of the optical clarity within a polyacrylamide(PAm) hydrogel was accomplished through the implementation of 'refractive index matching'. Water-soluble additives wereutilised to better match the refractive index inhomogeneities throughout a given hydrogel. This resulted in lower lightscattering within the system and hence improved clarity. Amino acids, sugars, polymers, and other water-soluble additivessuch as glycerol were investigated by this methodology. Most additives investigaed displayed potential for effectivelyreducing the light scattering within a PAm hydrogel as a function of increased additive concentration. On increasing therefractive index of the water medium, the overall refractive index of a PAm hydrogel was also observed to increase. Thisprovided a quantitative means of determining the effectiveness of a given additive for improving the optical clarity within ahydrogel.

This study investigated physical,chemical and lipid oxidative properties of emulsion gels(W/O)incorporating Jerusalem artichoke(JA)*** purified inulin extract(PPIE,1%)improved the homogeneity of emulsion gel(with no syneresis)and developed smaller particle size droplets(average 40μm)than control(average size 60μm).HPLC revealed that PPIE had 80.28%inulin content compared with commercial inulin(CI,100%).Crude inulin extract(CIE,0.08–0.33 mg/mL)delayed linoleic acid oxidation because of higher total phenolic content(4.96±0.01,mg GAE/g),compared with PPIE(0.72±0.03).Lipid oxidative stability of emulsion gels with inulin samples was in the order of CI>PPIE>CIE(P<0.05)by Rancimat analysis,which agreed with volumetric gel index *** study suggests that emulsion gels with JA inulin(PPIE)could act as a potential fat replacement in food systems.
