Melanoma is the deadliest skin cancer and is responsible for over 7000 deaths in the US *** spread of cancer,or metastasis,is responsible for these deaths,as secondary tumors interrupt normal organ *** tumor cells,or those cells that spread throughout the body from the primary tumor,are thought to be responsible for *** developed an optical method,photoacoustic flow cytometry,in order to detect and enumerate circulating melanoma cells(CMCs)from blood samples of *** tested the blood of StageⅣmelanoma patients to show the ability of the photoacoustic flow cytometer to detect these rare cells in *** then tested the system on archived blood samples from StageⅢmelanoma patients with known outcomes to determine if detection of CMCs can predict future *** detected between 0 and 66 CMCs in StageⅣ*** the StageⅢstudy,we found that of those samples with CMCs,two remained disease free and five developed *** those without CMCs,six remained disease free and one developed *** believe that photoacoustic detection of CMCs provides valuable information for the prediction of metastasis and we postulate a system for more accurate prognosis.

AIM To evaluate trends and disparities in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) outcomes among Hispanic patients in the United States with a focus on tumor stage at *** We retrospectively evaluated all Hispanic adults(age > 20) with HCC diagnosed from 2004 to 2014 using United States Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results(SEER) cancer registry data. Tumor stage was assessed by SEER-specific staging systems and whether HCC was within Milan criteria at *** logistic regression models evaluated for predictors of HCC within Milan criteria at *** Overall, Hispanics accounted for 19.8% of all HCC(73.3% men, 60.9% had Medicare or commercial insurance, 33.5% Medicaid, and 5.6% uninsured). Thirtyeight percent of Hispanic HCC patients were within Milan criteria at *** latter time periods, significantly more patients were diagnosed with HCC within Milan criteria, and in 2013-2014, 42.6% had HCC within Milan criteria. On multivariate regression, Hispanic males(OR vs females: 0.76, 95%CI: 0.68-0.83, P 65 years(OR vs age < 50: 0.67, 95%CI: 0.58-0.79, P < 0.001),and uninsured patients(OR vs Medicare/commercial: 0.49, 95%CI: 0.40-0.59, P <0.001) were significantly less likely to have HCC within Milan criteria at *** While one in five HCC patients in the United States are of Hispanic ethnicity,only 38% were within Milan criteria at time of diagnosis, and thus over 60% wereineligible for liver transplantation, one of the primary curative options for HCC patients. Improved efforts at HCC screening and surveillance are needed among this group to improve early detection.

The scientific community has shown great interest in the field of mass spectrometry-based proteomics and peptidomics for its applications in biology. Proteomics technologies have evolved to produce large data sets of proteins or peptides involved in various biologic and disease progression processes generating testable hypothesis for complex biologic questions. This review provides an introduction to relevant topics in proteomics and peptidomics including biologic material selection, sample preparation, separation techniques, peptide fragmentation, post-translational modifications, quantification, bioinformatics, and biomarker discovery and validation. In addition, current literature, remaining challenges, and emerging technologies for proteomics and peptidomics are presented.

Investigating the Correlation between Patient Education on Web-Based Portal Functionality and the Reduction in 30-Day Hospital Readmission Rates

Background: The growing use of web-based patient portals offers patients valuable tools for accessing health information, communicating with healthcare providers, and engaging in self-management. However, the influence of educating patients on these portals’ functionality on clinical outcomes, such as all-cause readmission rates, remains underexplored. Objective: This research proposal tested the hypothesis that educating a subset of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), on how to effectively access and utilize the functionality of web-based patient portals can reduce all-cause readmission rates. Methods: We performed a prospective, quasi-experimental study at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, USA;dividing participants into an intervention group, receiving education about accessing and navigating “My Chart”, the Bon Secours Web based portal, and a control group, receiving standard care. We then compared 30-day readmission rates, patient engagement, and self-management behaviors between the groups. Data was analyzed using statistical tests to assess the intervention’s impact. Results: We projected that educated patients will exhibit lower readmission rates, improved engagement, and better self-management. The results of the study showed that there was a significant decrease in 30-day readmissions in the intervention group in comparison with the control group (22.7% and 40.9%, respectively). This reduction of 18. 2% of readmissions evaluated here for a trial of meaningful clinical effect is statistically insignificant (p = 0. 184). The practical significance of the intervention is considered small-to-moderate (Cramer V = 0. 20) suggesting that the observed difference has a potential clinical importance even though the difference was not statistically significant. BACKGROUND： With the recent advances in oncological hepatic surgery, major liver resections became more widely utilized procedures. The era of modern hepatic surgery witnessed improvements in patients care in preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative aspects. This significantly improved surgical outcomes regarding morbidity and mortality. This review article focuses on the recent advances in oncological hepatic *** SOURCES： This review includes only data from peer-reviewed articles and journals. Pub Med database was utilized as the primary source of the supporting literature to this review article on the latest advances in oncological hepatic *** and high sensitivity search strategies were performed to search related studies exhaustively up till June 2016. We critically and independently assessed over 50 recent publications written on this topic according to the selection criteria and quality assessment standard. We paid particular attention to the studies published in high impact journals that address the use of the surgical techniques mentioned in the articles in well-known ***： Among all utilized approaches aiming at the preoperative assessment of the liver function, Child-TurcottePugh classification remains the most reliable tool correlating with survival outcome. Although the primary radiological tools including ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging remain on top of the menu of tests utilized in assessment of focal hepatic lesions, intraoperative ultrasonography projects to be a powerful additional tool in terms of sensitivity and specificity compared to the other conventional techniques in assessment of the liver inthe operative setting, a procedure that can change the surgical strategy in 27.2% of the cases and consequently improve the oncological surgical outcome. Deep Contextual Representation Learning for Identifying Essential Proteins via Integrating Multisource Protein Features

Essential proteins with biological functions are necessary for the survival of organisms. Computational recognition methods of essential proteins can reduce the workload and provide candidate proteins for biologists. However, existing methods fail to efficiently identify essential proteins, and generally do not fully use amino acid sequence information to improve the performance of essential protein recognition. In this work, we propose an end-to-end deep contextual representation learning framework called DeepIEP to automatically learn biological discriminative features without prior knowledge based on protein network heterogeneous information. Specifically, the model attaches amino acid sequences as the attributes of each protein node in the protein interaction network, and then automatically learns topological features from protein interaction networks by graph embedding algorithms. Next, multi-scale convolutions and gated recurrent unit networks are used to extract contextual features from gene expression profiles. The extensive experiments confirm that our DeepIEP is an effective and efficient feature learning framework for identifying essential proteins and contextual features of protein sequences can improve the recognition performance of essential proteins.

GV Technology for Exploration and Delineation of Lode Gold Claims

Demands for new gold deposits are increasing worldwide and the need to better define lode and placer claims is a critical environmental and economic issue. Recently, interesting results have been produced using dedicated geological information systems designed to explore for earth mineral deposits. These systems employ properties of fundamental physical fields generated by interactions of superlight elementary particles. GV technology （Geo-Vision geological direct detection radiometric and Air-Gamma technology）, a revolutionary technology for exploring the earth from outer space and from inside aircraft, has been utilized to identify and precisely locate gold deposits. All elements of the Earth＇s crust exist in an excited state and are constantly emitting what can be called their ＂intrinsic radiation＂. The melding of science and data interpretation makes GV Technology ideal for defining both lode and placer gold deposits. The use of GV technology will improve success ratios associated with the exploration for and delineation of gold deposits and provide better definition of successful core drilling locations. The technology will also decrease the cost of defining gold deposits and since GV technology is ecologically friendly, it provides considerable reductions in environmental mitigation costs. From 1995 to 2014, GV technology has been used to identify and delineate gold deposits in Russia, Mongolia, Kirghizia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Namibia, Australia, and the United States.
