Numerical study on local failures of reinforced concrete slabs against underwater close-in explosions

Reinforced concrete(RC)slabs are the primary load-carrying member of underwater *** can suffer severe local failures such as cratering,spalling,or breaching as a result of underwater close-in(UWCI)*** this study,we established a fully validated high-fidelity finite element analysis approach to precisely reproduce the local failures of RC slabs after a UWCI explosion.A recently proposed dynamic constitutive model is used to describe wet *** effects of free water content on the material properties,including the tensile/compressive strength,elastic modulus,strain rate effect,failure strength surface,and equation of state,are comprehensively calibrated based on existing test *** calibrated material parameters are then verified by a single-element test.A high-fidelity finite element analysis(FEA)approach of an RC slab subjected to a UWCI explosion is established using an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE)*** previous UWCI explosion tests on RC orifice targets and underwater contact explosion tests on saturated concrete slabs showed that the established FEA approach could accurately reproduce the pressure-time history in water and damage patterns,including the cracking,cratering,and spalling,of the RC orifice target and saturated concrete ***,parametric studies conducted by simulating an RC slab subjected to a UWCI explosion showed that:(i)the local failure of an RC slab enlarges with increased charge weight,reduced standoff distance,and reduced structural thickness;(ii)compared to a water-backed RC slab,an air-backed RC slab exhibits much more obvious local and structural ***,to aid the anti-explosion design of relevant underwater facilities,based on over 90 simulation cases empirical formulae are summarized to predict local failure modes,i.e.,no spall,spall,and breach,of water-and air-backed RC slabs subjected to a UWCI explosion.

Comparison of the hygrothermal performance of two light-framed timber structure buildings under different operation modes

Light-framed timber structure(LTS)buildings have been highly valued in recent years due to their low-carbon ***,the applicability of the building envelope is closely related to indoor and outdoor *** hot summer and cold winter(HSCW)climate zone in China has high humidity and great temperature variation throughout the year,resulting in distinct outdoor environments in different *** indoor environment is greatly affected by energy-consumption patterns and window-opening habits,which largely depend upon the regulation operations of *** these interrelated factors lead to extremely complex boundary conditions on each side of the building *** the structures of LTS buildings are applicable in this climate zone,therefore,needs to be carefully *** this study,two LTS buildings with different envelopes were established in Haining,China,situated in the HSCW climate zone,and selected as the study *** operation modes were adopted to create a variety of indoor *** each condition,the processes of heat and moisture transfer within the building envelopes and the indoor environment were monitored and *** comparison indicated that the building envelope with high moisture storage and insulation ability maintained a relatively stable indoor environment,especially when the environment changed ***,if the outdoor environment was equable(e.g.,relative humidity within the range of 30%–60%)or intermittent energy consumption modes were adopted,the building envelope with a low thermal inertia index and weak moisture-buffering ability performed better because it enabled a faster response of the indoor environment to air ***,a high risk of moisture accumulation between the thermal insulation layer and other materials with a large water vapour transfer resistance factor was also identified,suggesting a higher requirement for the vapour insulation of the env

Automatic detection and assessment of surface cracks are beneficial for understanding the mechanical performance of ultra-high performance concrete(UHPC).This study detects crack evolution using a novel dynamic mode decomposition(DMD)*** this method,the sparse matrix‘determined’from images is used to reconstruct the foreground that contains cracks,and the global threshold method is adopted to extract the crack *** application of the DMD method to the three-point bending test demonstrates the efficiency in inspecting cracks with high ***,the geometric features,including the area and its projection in two major directions,are evaluated over *** relationship between the geometric properties of cracks and load-displacement curves of UHPC is *** to the irregular shape of cracks in the spatial domain,the cracks are then transformed into the Fourier domain to assess their *** indicate that crack patterns in the Fourier domain exhibit a distinct concentration around a central ***,the power spectral density of cracks exhibits an increasing trend over *** investigation into crack evolution in both the spatial and Fourier domains contributes significantly to elucidating the mechanical behavior of UHPC.

Micromechanics investigations of composites with fiber-shaped reinforcement are extensively applied in the engineering design and theoretical analysis of thermal composites in the aerospace engineering and high-tech *** this paper,a critical review of various classical micromechanics approaches is provided based on the classification framework and the development of micromechanics *** numerical micromechanics tools have been developed to overcome limitations through exactly/approximately solving the internal governing equations of *** connections and limitations of those models are also investigated and discussed,based on which three recently developed numerical or semi-analytical models are explained,including finite-element micromechanics,finite-volume direct averaging micromechanics,and locally exact homogenization theory,as well as machine learning *** it is almost inevitable to mention the interfacial effects on thermal behavior of fibrous composites,we review the new mathematical relations that interrupt the original continuity conditions due to the existence of interphase/interface within unit *** speaking,the interphase/interface is demonstrated to play a significant role in influencing the effective coefficients and localized thermal *** present work also briefly reviews the application of micromechanics tools in emerging engineered woven composites,natural fibrous composites,and ablative thermal protection *** is demonstrated that sophisticated micromechanics tools are always demanded for investigating the effective and localized responses of thermal fibrous composites.

Prediction of maximum upward displacement of shield tunnel linings during construction using particle swarm optimization-random forest algorithm

During construction,the shield linings of tunnels often face the problem of local or overall upward movement after leaving the shield tail in soft soil areas or during some large diameter shield *** floating will increase the initial stress on the segments and bolts which is harmful to the service performance of the *** this study we used a random forest(RF)algorithm combined particle swarm optimization(PSO)and 5-fold cross-validation(5-fold CV)to predict the maximum upward displacement of tunnel linings induced by shield tunnel *** mechanism and factors causing upward movement of the tunnel lining are comprehensively *** input variables were selected according to results from analysis of influencing *** prediction performance of two models,PSO-RF and RF(default)were *** Gini value was obtained to represent the relative importance of the influencing factors to the upward displacement of *** PSO-RF model successfully predicted the maximum upward displacement of the tunnel linings with a low error(mean absolute error(MAE)=4.04 mm,root mean square error(RMSE)=5.67 mm)and high correlation(R^(2)=0.91.).The thrust and depth of the tunnel were the most important factors in the prediction model influencing the upward displacement of the tunnel linings.

An approach for determination of lateral limit angle in kinematic planar sliding analysis for rock slopes

Planar sliding is one of the frequently observed types of failure in rock *** analysis is a classic and widely used method to examine the potential failure modes in rock *** accuracy of planar sliding kinematic analysis is significantly influenced by the value assigned to the lateral limit angleγ***,the assignment ofγlim is currently used generally based on an empirical *** study aims to propose an approach for determining the value ofγlim in deterministic and probabilistic kinematic planar sliding analysis.A new perspective is presented to reveal thatγlim essentially influences the probability of forming a potential planar sliding *** procedure to calculate this probability is introduced using the block theory *** is found that the probability is correlated with the number of discontinuity sets presented in rock ***,different values ofγlim for rock masses with different sets of discontinuities are recommended in both probabilistic and deterministic planar sliding kinematic analyses;whereas a fixed value ofγlim is commonly assigned to different types of rock masses in traditional ***,an engineering case was used to compare the proposed and traditional kinematic analysis *** error rates of the traditional method vary from 45%to 1.9%,while that of the proposed method ranges between 1.and 1.%.Therefore,it is likely that the proposed method is superior to the traditional one.

A Multiscale Model of Mass-Functionally Graded Beam-Fluid System Under Bending and Vibration Responses

In this paper,a multiscale model is developed for the mass functionally graded(FG)beam-fluid system to investigate its static and dynamic responses based on 3D printed porous beam free vibration tests,which are determined by two *** the microstructural level,the gradient variation is realized by arbitrary distribution of matrix pores,and the effective moduli under specific distribution are obtained using the micromechanics homogenization *** the meantime,at the structural level,the mechanical responses of FG porous beams subjected to mass loading are considered in a static fluid ***,the explicit expressions of local finite-element(FE)expressions corresponding to the static and dynamic responses are given in the *** present results are validated against numerical and experimental results from the literature and mechanical tests of 3D printed structures,with good agreement generally obtained,giving credence to the present *** this basis,a comprehensive parametric study is carried out,with a particular focus on the effects of boundary conditions,fluid density,and slenderness ratio on the bending and vibration of FG beams with several different gradations.

Corrosion behavior and protection mechanism of carbon steel coated with ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene(ECTFE)

Ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene(ECTFE)coating was applied to the surface of carbon steel through electrostatic spraying and low-temperature heat *** morphology and structure of the coating were analyzed using various characterization *** electrochemical data of the coated steel soaked in 3.5%(mass fraction)NaCl solution for 90 d at different periods were also *** findings indicate that the outer surface of the coating remains structurally stable before and after soaking.F can diffuse into the steel substrate,facilitating the bonding between the coating and the steel substrate,but the free F also induces a weakening effect on the crystalline *** to the thickness of the coating edge and the susceptibility to infiltration of the corrosive medium,under-film micro-zone corrosion occurs at a slow *** soaking for 90 d,the impedance modulus measures approximately 1.^(4)Ω·cm^(2),and the open circuit potential(OCP)is−0.61.*** self-corrosion current density is 1.1.×1.^(−6)A/cm^(2),resulting in a calculated coating protection rate of 99.29%.In summary,despite edge corrosion occurring,the ECTFE coating provides excellent corrosion protection.

There is growing evidence of the high transmission potential of COVID-1. through virus-laden *** aerosols are inhaled in various concentrations,an overall assessment of transmission risks at different indoor scales is ***,a comprehensive risk assessment method that evaluates the direct link between short-range and room-scale zones is stl *** this paper,a risk assessment model combining both short-range and room-scale effects is developed to obtain effective reproduction number in confined indoor environments,called Turbulent Jet Wells Riley(TJWR)*** with the viral load data and aerosol generation data of different human respiratory activities,the Monte Carlo simulation method is applied to calculate the quanta emission rate,which further provides the input parameters of the TJWR *** known outbreaks(Hangzhou banquet hall X,Guangzhou restaurant Y,and Hong Kong restaurant Z,China)are chosen to validate the TJWR *** show that the TJWR model is more efficient than the original Wells-Riley *** average relative error of the TJWR model ranges between 9%and 44%,while for the Wells-Riley model,it ranges between 57%and 78%.The TJWR model also proves that infection risk assessments using the well-mixed assumption can systematically underestimate the transmission risk for those close to the ***,there is a significant positive linear correlation between the total number of exposed individuals at the short-range and the effective reproduction *** newly developed TJWR model has great potential for rapid and real-time overall airborne transmission risk assessment in buildings and cities.
