A series of independent faulted basins developed in the present middle reaches of the Yellow River during late Cenozoic, among which the Sanmen Lake Basin is located in the east edge of the Loess Plateau, a transitional zone between the second and third macromorphological step of China. The thick strata of the Sanmen Group deposited in the large basin. The Sanmen Group is a perfect place for the study on paleoenvironmental change, tectono-climatic cycles as well as the formation and evolution of the Yellow River. In this paper, the paleoenvironmental changes, regional tectonic movement and the evolutionary process of the Sanmen Lake Basin during the past 5 Ma were reconstructed based on the analysis of paleomagnetic stratigraphy, pollen, TOC and carbonate content from the Huangdigou outcrop near the Sanmenxia Reservoir, Pinglu County, Shanxi Province. The sedimentary records from the outcrop indicate that the basin was first formated by fault activity at about 5.4 MaBP, and after the strong tectonic movement at 3.6 MaBP the lake enlarged and the rainfall of summer monsoon increased. There was no great climatic transition near 2.6 MaBP, corresponding to the bottom age of loess in the Loess Plateau. After Olduvai event (about 1.77 MaBP) the Picea and Abies were presented in the sediments, which indicates a colder climate. The tectonic movement at 1.2 MaBP caused the light angular discordance between the upper and lower Sanmen Group. The sedimentary records show a cold and wet climate during the prosperous periods of loess accumulation such as L1., L9, L6. The tectonic intensification periods of the Sanmen Basin correspond with the tectonic movements in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau chronologically. The earliest age of the outflow from the Paleo-Sanmen Lake or the partly cutting off of the Sanmenxia Gorge was about 0.41. 0.35 MaBP. Periodicity of Retzius lines is a key factor in dental development. In this study, we examined the periodicity of Retzius lines in fossil Pongo from South China using polarized light microscope observation of dental ground sections. The periodicities all of the 1. teeth were 9 d. Comparisons of periodicity were made with extant primates, fossil apes and hominins. Periodicity of fossil Pongo from South China was relatively long but fell within the variation of extant Pongo, Gorilla and modern human, and longer than periodicity of Pan and other extant primates. Fossil Pongo from South China was similar to Lufengpithecus and Sivapithecus, shorter than Gigantopithecus and longer than European and African fossil apes and most early hominins in periodicity. Generally, the periodicities of Asian large-body fossil apes were longer than the periodicities of European and African large-body fossil apes in Miocene. Difference among species and trend of evolution in periodicity were analyzed and discussed. We found that periodicity might gradually increase from Proconsul in early Miocene to several fossil apes in Miocene and then Gigantopithecus in Pleistocene. In addition, this study made correlate analysis between periodicity and body mass respectively in males and females of six extant apes and five fossil apes, and found that periodicity positively correlated with body mass.

In this study, the first complete mitochondrial genome（mitogenome） of lepidopteran family Drepanidae（superfamily Drepanoidea） was reported with the notes about its phylogenetic implications. The Oreta fuscopurpurea mitogenome is 1.,564 bp in length, including 1. protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs（lrRNA and srRNA）, 22 transfer RNAs and a non-coding control region（AT-rich region）, with a 79.6% A＋T content. The gene orientation and arrangement of the mitogenome are the same as other sequenced lepidopterans. All protein-coding genes usually start with the common ATN codon except for COI gene, which used CGA as the initial codon; eight PCGs use a typical stop codon of TAA, whereas the remaining PCGs use incomplete stop codon of T or TA. All tRNAs have the typical clover-leaf structure with the exception of t RNA^（Ser）（AGN）. The lrRNA and sr RNA genes are 1.409 bp and 778 bp in size respectively, with the former harboring one（TA）_（1.） microsatellite-like repeat and an 1. bp insertion. The 20 intergenic spacers totaling of 1.4 bp and 8 overlapping sequences totaling of 25 bp are scattered throughout the whole mitogenome. The 526 bp AT-rich region contains some structures characteristic of lepidopterans, such as the motif ATAGA preceded by an 1. bp poly-T stretch, a tRNA-like and a sterm-loop structures. Phylogenetic analysis of the Oreta fuscopurpurea with other 47 insect species covering 20 lepidopteran families were conducted based on the sequence data of the 1. mitogenomic protein coding genes with maximum likelihood（ML） and Bayesian inference（BI） methods, and the results showed distinctly that the superfamily Drepanoidea was sister to the clade of（Bombycoidea, Lasiocampoidea）＋（Noctuoidea, Geometroidea）.

East Asia has long been recognized as a major center for temperate woody plants *** several theories have been proposed to explain how the diversity of these temperate elements accumulated in the region,the specific process remains *** we describe six species of Carpinus,a typical northern hemisphere temperate woody plant,from the early Miocene of the Maguan Basin,southwestern China,southern East *** constitutes the southernmost,and the earliest occurrence that shows a high species diversity of the *** with other Carpinus fossil records from East Asia,we show that the genus had achieved a high diversity in East Asia at least by the middle *** the six species here described,three have become extinct,indicating that the genus has experienced apparent species loss during its evolutionary history in East *** contrast,the remaining three species closely resemble extant species,raising the possibility that these species may have persisted in East Asia at least since the early *** findings indicate that the accumulation of species diversity of Carpinus in East Asia is a complex process involving extinction,persistence,and possible subsequent speciation.

A number of fossil mammals have been found in the very thick Cenozoic stratigraphy of the Guide Basin in the northeastern margin of the Tibetan *** of these are of great significance in mammal evolution and stratigraphic correla-tion on and around the Tibetan Plateau and North ***,the chronology of these mamals is poorly *** of the mammals will not only place precise age constraints on the mammals,but also provide much inlormation on the related stratigraphy that records the uplift process of the Tibetan *** paleomagnetism of the upper part of the Cenozoic stratigraphy at He'erjia and Lajigai north of Guide County has revealed magnetic chrons that can be correlated to Ganss and 3An *** the section spanning about 3.1..5 Ma and the *** and third layers of fossil mammals at about 5.25,5.1.and 4.4 Ma,*** of the significant genus Gazella kueitensis and the Chinese elephant Anancus sinensis are firstly constrained at about 5.25 MaBP and 4.4 Ma,*** mammalian evolution and the associated increase in coarse sediments and sedimentation rate may suggest that the northeastern Tibetan Plateau was uplifted rapidly at that time,and the eastern Tibetan Plateau with its neighboring regions was not high enough to stop mammal exchange between the northern and southern sides of the Tibetan Piateau.
