Alternaria toxin-induced resistance in rose plants against rose aphid(Macrosiphum rosivorum): effect of tenuazonic acid

Many different types of toxins are produced by the fungus, Alternaria alternata （Fr.） Keissler. Little is known, however, regarding the influence of these toxins on insects. In this study, we investigated the toxin-induced inhibitory effects of the toxin produced by A. alternata on the rose aphid, Macrosiphum rosivorum, when the toxin was applied to leaves of the rose, Rosa chinensis. The results demonstrated that the purified crude toxin was non-harmful to rose plants and rose aphids, but had an intensive inhibitory effect on the multiplication of aphids. The inhibitory index against rose aphids reached 87.99% when rose plants were sprayed with the toxin solution at a low concentration. Further results from bioassays with aphids and high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） analyses demon- strated that tenuazonic acid （TEA） was one of the most important resistance-related active components in the crude toxin. The content of TeA was 0.1.99% in the crude toxin under the HPLC method. Similar to the crude toxin, the inhibitory index of pure TeA reached 83.60% 1. d after the rose plants were sprayed with pure TeA solution at the lower concentration of 0.060 IJg/ml, while the contents of residual TeA on the surface and in the inner portion of the rose plants were only 0.04 and 0.00 ng/g fresh weight of TeA-treated rose twigs, respectively, 7 d after the treatment. Our results show that TeA, an active component in the A. alternata toxin, can induce the indirect plant-mediated re- sponses in rose plants to intensively enhance the plant＇s resistances against rose aphids, and the results are very helpful to understand the plant-mediated interaction between fungi and insects on their shared host plants.

Efficient extraction of phenol from wastewater by ionic micro-emulsion method:Anionic and cationic

Phenolic wastewater is one of the priorities in the field of wastewater treatment,which poses a serious threat to the human health and nature *** this paper,cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)and anionic sodium oleate(Na OL)microemulsions were utilized to extract phenol from the *** optimal extraction factors were investigated by exploring the effects of microemulsion composition ratio and extraction conditions on the phenol extraction ***,the enhanced extraction mechanism of phenol by cations microemulsions is illustrated by studying the extraction process of cationic and anionic microemulsions in the extraction of *** optimum components were obtained:surfactant concentration of 0.2 mol·L^(-1.,isoamyl alcohol volume of 30%,internal aqueous phase concentration of CTAB microemulsion of 0.05 mol·L^(-1.,and internal aqueous phase concentration of Na OL microemulsion of 0.09 mol·L^(-1..The extraction efficiencies were 96.44%and 82.0%when using CTAB and Na OL microemulsions under optimal conditions(water-emulsion ratio of 5,contact time of 9 min,extraction temperature of 298.1. K,and p H of 9),confirming the enhanced extraction of phenol by CTAB cationic *** was analyzed that the enhanced extraction of CTAB microemulsion was due to the electrostatic adsorption of cations with phenol root ions.

Size distribution and chemical characteristics of particles from crop residue open burning in North China

Crop residue open burning is an important emission source of ambient particles in *** study analyzed the particle emission characteristics of crop residue open burning through combustion experiments with a novel open combustion simulation device using three typical crop straws in north China(corn,wheat,and rice).Particle samples size ranging from 0.006–9.890μm were collected by an Electrical Low Pressure Impactor plus,a high size-resolution instrument capable of dividing particles into 1. size *** size distributions of organic carbon(OC),elemental carbon(EC),water-soluble ions,and elements were analyzed,and source chemical profiles were constructed for PM0.1.PM1.PM2.5,and *** number concentration of particles was concentrated in the Aiken nuclei mode(0.006–0.054μm),accounting for 75%of the total number,whereas the mass concentration was concentrated in the accumulation mode(0.054–0.949μm),accounting for 85.43%of the mass ***,EC,Cl−,and K(include total K and water-soluble K)were the major chemical components of the particles,whose mass percentage distributions differed from those of other *** fivemain components exhibited a bell-shaped size distribution in the 0.006–9.890μm range,whereas the other components exhibited a U-shaped *** the chemical profiles for PM0.1.PM1.,OC was the most important component at 1.–30%,followed by EC at 2%–8%.The proportions of K^(+),Cl^(−),and K varied substantially in different experimental groups,ranging from 0–1.%,and K+and Cl−were significantly correlated(r=0.878,α=0.000).

Numerical simulation of the delay arming process of initiating explosive brakes

The delay arming process of initiating explosive （ IE ） brakes for fuse is complex and hard to be verified. A numerical simulation model of IE brakes was established based on the arbitrary La- grange-Euler method. The model included the structure, the air filed, etc. The simulation boundary conditions were defined, including the contacts, blasting parameters of the explosive and the fluid- solid coupling interface. The simulation results show that the shear pin of the chosen IE can be cut off. When the piston needs to move 0.8 cm, the time set to the delay arming of the IE brakes model is about 40μS. The maximum displacement of the piston is 1. 1. cm. The model provides basis for parameters design and further improvement of IE brakes.

Effects of different brush border membrane vesicle isolation protocols on proteomic analysis of Cry1.c binding proteins from the midgut of Helicoverpa armigera

Brush border membrane vesicles （BBMV） isolated from insect midguts have been widely used to study CrylA binding proteins. Sample preparation is important in two- dimensional electrophoresis （2-DE）, so to determine a suitable BBMV preparation method in Helicoverpa armigera for 2-DE, we compared three published BBMV preparation methods mostly used in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis （SDS- PAGE）. All methods yielded similar types and numbers of binding proteins, but in different quantities. The Abdul-Rauf and Ellar protocol was the best of the three, but had limitations. Sufficient protein quantity is important for research involving limited numbers of insects, such as studies of insect resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis in the field. Consequently, we integrated the three BBMV isolation methods into a single protocol that yielded high quantities of BBMV proteins from H. armigera larval midguts, which proved suitable for 2- DE analysis.

Recyclable polymer-based nano-hydrous manganese dioxide for highly efficient Tl(I) removal from water

TI（I） in water even at a trace level is fatal to human beings and the ecosystem. Here we fabricated a new polymer-supported nanocomposite （HMO-001. for efficient TI（I） removal by encapsulating nanosized hydrous manganese dioxide （HMO） within a polystyrene cation exchanger （D-001.. The resultant HMO-001.exhibited more preferable removal of TI（I） than D-001.and IRC-748, an iminodiacetic chelating polymer, particularly in the presence of competing Ca（II） ions at greater levels in solution. Such preference was ascribed to the Donnan membrane effect caused by D-001.as well as the specific interaction between TI（I） and HMO. The adsorbed TI（I） was partially oxidized into insoluble TI（III） by HMO at acidic pH, while negligible oxidation was observed at circumneutral pH. The exhausted HMO-001.was amenable to efficient regeneration by binary NaOH-NaC1. solution for at least 1.-cycle batch runs without any significant capacity loss. Fixed-bed column test of Tl（I）-contained indus- trial effluent and natural water further validated that TI（I） retention on HMO-001.resulted in a conspicuous concentration drop from 1.3 mg/L to a value lower than 0.1. mg/L （maximum concentration level for industrial effluent regulated by US EPA） and from 1.4 μg/L to a value lower than 0.1.μg/L （drinking water standard regulated by China Health Ministry）, respectively.

Effect of ozone injection on the long-term performance and microbial community structure of a VOCs biofilter

For biofilters treating waste gases containing volatile organic compounds（VOCs）, biomass accumulation is a common problem which will induce bed clogging and significant decrease in VOCs removal efficiency during long-term operation. In this study, ozone injection was developed as a biomass control strategy, and its effects on the biofilter performance and the microbial community structure were investigated in long-term operation. Two biofilters,identified as BF1.and BF2, were operated continuously for 1.0 days treating gaseous toluene under the same conditions, except that 200 mg/m^3 ozone was continuously injected into BF1.during days 45–1.0. During the operation period, ozone injection did not change the toluene removal efficiency, while the pressure drop of BF1.with ozone injection was significantly lowered compared with BF2. The wet biomass accumulation rate of BF1.was 1. g/m^3/hr, which was only46% of that in BF2. According to the carbon balance result, ozone injection also increased the toluene mineralization rate from 83% to 91., which could be an important reason for the low biomass accumulation. The PMA-q PCR result indicated that ozone injection increased the microbial viability of the biofilm. The high-throughput sequencing result also revealed that the dominant phyla and genera were not changed significantly by ozone injection, but some ozonetolerant genera such as Rhodanobacter, Dokdonella and Rhodococcus were enhanced by ozone exposure. All the results verified that ozone injection is capable of sustaining the long-term performance of biofilters by lowering the biomass accumulation, increasing the microbial viability and changing the microbial community structure.

Mechanistic study on 4,4'-sulfonylbis removal with CO_(2)/Ar gas-liquid DBD plasma

In this study,a single dielectric barrier discharge(DBD)coaxial reactor was used to degrade 4,4'-sulfonylbis(TBBPS)in water using greenhouse gas(CO_(2))and argon as the carrier *** investigation focused on CO_(2)conversion,reactive species formation,gas-liquid mass transfer mechanism,and degradation mechanism of TBBPS during the discharge plasma *** the decrease of CO_(2)/Ar ratio in the process of plasma discharge,the emission spectrum intensity of Ar,CO_(2)and excited reactive species was *** increase promoted collision and dissociation of CO_(2),resulting in a series of chemical reactions that improved the production of reactive species such as·OH,^(1.O_(2),H_(2)O_(2)and O_(3).These reactive species initiated a sequence of reactions with *** indicated that at a gas flow rate of 240 mL/min with a CO_(2)/Ar ratio of 1.5,both the highest CO_(2)conversion rate(1..76%)and TBBPS degradation rate(94.24%)were *** degradation mechanism was elucidated by determining types and contents of reactive species present in treatment liquid along with analysis of intermediate products using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry *** research provides novel insights into carbon dioxide utilization and water pollution control through dielectric barrier discharge plasma technology.
