Dissolution kinetics and reaction mechanism of Al_(2)O_(3) in molten CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag

The dissolution behavior of Al_(2)O_(3) in molten CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag,a basic slag system of electroslag remelting process,was investigated by rotating cylinder method using corundum rods to simulate Al_(2)O_(3) inclusions in *** experimental results show that the dissolution rate of Al_(2)O_(3);rods in CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag increases with the increase in rotating speed and temperature,and the rate-controlling step is the mass transfer in the *** dissolution rate of Al_(2)O,in CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag increases with the increase in the ratio of CaO to Al_(2)O_(3),which is due to the increase in dissolution driving force and the decrease in slag *** apparent activation energy of the mass transfer of AlOs in slag C is calculated to be 222.86 kJ mol^(-1..During the dissolution of Al_(2)0,inclusions in the slag,it reacts with F in liquid slag at first,then reacts with CaO to form the intermediate compounds of xCaO-yAl_(2)O_(3) system,and finally dissolves in molten *** dissolution rate of Al_(2)O_(3) inclusions in CaF_(2)-CaO-Al_(2)O_(3) slag for electroslag remelting is positively correlated with the ratio of the dissolution driving force and slag viscosity,and the correlation coeficient is 2.487×1.^(-1.).

Permanganate/sulfite(Mn(VII)/S(IV))process is a promising pre-oxidation technology for sequestering the emerging organic contaminants in drinking water treatment ***(IPM),a representative of iodinated X-ray contrast media,has been widely detected in water sources and has the risk of forming iodinated disinfection byproducts(I-DBPs)in water treatment *** this study,we investigated the evolution of iodine species during the IPM degradation by the Mn(VII)/S(IV)process and its effect on the subsequent formation of I-DBPs during chlorination at pH 7.0 and *** could be effectively degraded in the Mn(VII)/S(IV)process at environmentally relevant pH(pH 7.0 and 8.0).The results of quenching and competitive oxidation kinetic experiments revealed that SO^(·-)_(4)was the major reactive oxidizing species contributing to the degradation of IPM whereas the contributions of HO·and reactive manganese species were negligible in the Mn(VII)/S(IV)process.I–and IO–3were generated while no HOI was detected during the degradation of IPM in the Mn(VII)/S(IV)*** effects of IPM oxidation by Mn(VII)/S(IV)on the subsequent formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products(Cl-DBPs)during chlorination were related to the category of *** pre-oxidation of IPM by Mn(VII)/S(IV)resulted in the generation of I-DBPs during the disinfection process although no I-DBPs were detected if no pre-oxidation was *** finding of this study suggested that attention should be paid to the toxicity of DBPs when water containing iodinated organic contaminants is treated by Mn(VII)/S(IV)process or other pre-oxidation technologies.

Rapid recovery of desert shrubs is attributed to imbalance of water supply to demand after disturbance in Northwest China

Background Disturbance is a key driver of changes in {1. ecosystems, especially in water limited regions. In the desert ecosystem of Northwest China, shrubs are often foraged by camels and this causes the shrubs lost their aboveground tissues. Although the aboveground tissue could recover after the disturbance, the mechanisms of resprouts' recovery after the disturbance are still poorly understood. We investigated the morphological and physiological characteristics and root water uptake sources of resprouts and non-disturbed seedlings of four desert shrub species that were often foraged by *** The results showed that the resprouts grew rapidly after the removal of aboveground tissue. The height and aboveground biomass of resprouts reached the level of 5-year-old seedlings following a growing season. Compared to un-disturbed seedlings, higher leaf water potential, leaf hydraulic conductance and photosynthesis rate were observed in resprouts, indicating that resprouts grew rapidly after disturbance. Furthermore, we found that the root water uptake source did not change after disturbance. This indicated that the roots of resprouts kept intact water uptake capacity after disturbance, which could keep supplying sufficient water to the aboveground tissue. Due to the removal of aboveground tissue of the resprouts, the water demand of aboveground tissue decreased, which induced an imbalance of water supply from roots to demand of aboveground tissues of resprouts. This explained the improved physiological performance and rapid recovery of resprouts after *** The imbalance of water supply to demand contributes to the rapid recovery of desert shrubs after disturbance. The findings provide insight into the eco-physiological mechanism for the maintenance of desert ecosystems that are facing disturbance.

The sinking of phytoplankton is critical to organic matter transportation in the ocean and it is an essential process for the formation of coastal hypoxic *** study was based on a field investigation conducted during the summer of 2022 in the Changjiang River(Yangtze River) Estuary(CJE) and its adjacent *** settling column method was employed to measure the sinking velocity(SV) of different size fractions of phytoplankton at the surface of the sea and to analyze their environmental control *** findings reveal significant spatial variation in phytoplankton SV(-0.55-2.41.m/d) within the ***-speed sinking was predominantly observed in phosphate-depleted regions beyond the CJE *** the same time,an upward trend was more commonly observed in the phosphate-rich regions near the CJE *** SV ranges for different sizefractionated phytoplankton,including micro-(>20 μm),nano-(2-20 μm),and picophytoplankton(0.7-2 μm),were-0.50-4.74 m/d,-1.04-1.59 m/d,and-1.24-1.65 m/d,*** analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between SV and dissolved inorganic phosphorus(DIP),implying that the influence of DIP contributes to *** variations in phytoplankton alkaline phosphatase activity suggested a significant increase in SV across all size fractions in the event of phosphorus *** communities with limited photo synthetic capacity(maximum photochemical efficience,Fv/Fm <0.3) were found to have higher SV than that of communities with strong capacity,suggesting a link between sinking and alterations in physiological conditions due to phosphate *** findings from the in situ phosphate enrichment experiments confirmed a marked decrease in SV following phosphate *** findings suggest that phosphorus limitation is the primary driver of elevated SV in the *** study enhances the comprehension of the potential mechanisms underlying hypoxic zone formation in the CJE,providing no

Epidermal microorganisms contributed to the toxic mechanism of nZVI and TCEP in earthworms by robbing metal elements and nutrients

Disrupting effects of pollutants on symbiotic microbiota have been regarded as an important mechanism of host toxicity,with most current research focusing on the intestinal *** fact,the epidermal microbiota,which participates in the nutrient exchange between hosts and environments,could play a crucial role in host toxicity via community *** compare the contributions of intestinal and epidermal symbiotic microorganisms to host toxicity,this study designed single and combined scenarios of soil contamination[nano zerovalent iron(nZVI)and tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate(TCEP)],and revealed the coupling mechanisms between intestinal/epidermal symbiotic bacterial communities and earthworm toxicological *** analysis showed that 1.%of intestinal microbes were highly correlated with host endpoints,compared to 45%of epidermal microbes showing a similar *** comparisons revealed that key species on the epidermis were mainly heterotrophic microbes with genetic abilities to utilize metal elements and carbohydrate *** verifications demonstrated that when facing the co-contamination of nZVI and TCEP,certain symbiotic microorganisms became dominant and consumed zinc,copper,and manganese along with saccharides and amino acids,which may be responsible for the nutritional deficiencies in the host *** findings can enrich the understanding of the coupling relationship between symbiotic microorganisms and host toxicity,highlighting the importance of epidermal microorganisms in host resistance to environmental pollution.

Geographical patterns and determinants of insect biodiversity in China

Insects play important roles in the maintenance of ecosystem functioning and the provision of livelihoods for millions of ***,compared with terrestrial vertebrates and angiosperms,such as the giant panda,crested ibis,and the metasequoia,insect conservation has not attracted enough attention,and a basic understanding of the geographical biodiversity patterns for major components of insects in China is ***,we investigated the geographical distribution of insect biodiversity across multiple dimensions(taxonomic,genetic,and phylogenetic diversity)based on the spatial distribution and molecular DNA sequencing data of *** analysis included 1. orders,360 families,5,275 genera,and 1.,1.5 species of *** results revealed that Southwestern and Southeastern China harbored higher insect biodiversity and numerous older lineages,representing a museum,whereas regions located in Northwestern China harbored lower insect biodiversity and younger lineages,serving as an evolutionary *** also observed that mean annual temperature and precipitation had significantly positive effects,whereas altitude had significantly negative effects on insect biodiversity in most ***,cultivated vegetation harbored the highest insect taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity,and needleleaf and broadleaf mixed forests harbored the highest insect genetic *** results indicated that human activities may positively contribute to insect spatial diversity on a regional *** study fills a knowledge gap in insect spatial diversity in *** findings could help guide national-level conservation plans and the post-2020 biodiversity conservation framework.

Taxonomy,distribution,and contemporary exposure of terrestrial mammals to floods and human pressure across different areas for biodiversity conservation in China

A significant research focus is placed on identifying animal species and areas at future risk to human-induced alterations of the environment and long-term changes in climatic ***,the extent to which exposure to extreme climatic events and intense human pressure can increase the risk of harmful impacts on species remains poorly *** on terrestrial mammals in China,one of the world’s megadiverse countries,we investigated patterns of contemporary exposure to floods and human pressures and determined their taxonomic representation and distribution across three major area-based conservation schemes,namely,national nature reserves(NNRs),priority areas for biodiversity conservation(PABCs),and {1. biodiversity areas(KBAs).Among the 440 species assessed with moderate or high exposure to floods,327(∼75%)also qualified as moderate or high in exposure to intense human *** species mainly belong to the orders Chiroptera,Eulipotyphla,and ***,there were 305,31.,and 31. species with moderate or high exposure to flood and intense human pressure represented across NNRs,PABCs,and KBAs,*** findings support the prioritization of KBAs for expansion of site-based protection efforts such as NNRs in China,considering threats to species from exposure to adverse effects from both extreme climate and human pressure.

Single-atom catalysts(SACs)with high catalytic activity as well as great stability are demonstrating great promotion in electrocatalytic energy conversion,which is also a big challenge to ***,we proposed a facile synthetic strategy to construct nickel-iron bimetallic hydroxide nanoribbon stabilized single-atom iridium catalysts(Ir-NiFe-OH),where the nickel-iron hydroxide nanoribbon not only can serve as good electronic conductor,but also can well stabilize and fully expose single-atom *** as catalyst for urea oxidation reaction(UOR),it exhibited excellent UOR performance that it only needed a low operated potential of 1.38 V to achieve the current density of 1.0 mA·cm^(-2).In-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray absorption spectrum,and density functional theory calculations proved that Ir species are active centers and the existence of both Ni and Fe in the local structure of Ir atom can optimize the d-band center of Ir species,promoting the adsorption of intermediates and desorption of products for *** hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)/UOR electrocatalytic cell demanded voltages of 1.46 and 1.50 V to achieve 50 and 1.0 mA·cm^(-2),respectively,which demonstrated a higher activity and better stability than those of conventional *** work opens a new avenue to develop catalysts for UORs with boosted activity and stability.

Preparation of lithium-ion battery anode materials from graphitized spent carbon cathode derived from aluminum electrolysis

Graphitized spent carbon cathode(SCC)is a hazardous solid waste generated in the aluminum electrolysis *** this study,a flotation-acid leaching process is proposed for the purification of graphitized SCC,and the use of the purified SCC as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries is *** flotation and acid leaching processes were separately optimized through one-way *** maximum SCC carbon content(93wt%)was achieved at a 90%proportion of−200-mesh flotation particle size,a slurry concentration of 1.wt%,a rotation speed of 1.00 r/min,and an inflatable capacity of 0.2 m^(3)/h(referred to as FSCC).In the subsequent acid leaching process,the SCC carbon content reached 99.58wt%at a leaching concentration of 5 mol/L,a leaching time of 1.0 min,a leaching temperature of 85°C,and an HCl/FSCC volume ratio of 5:*** purified graphitized SCC(referred to as FSCC-CL)was utilized as an anode material,and it exhibited an initial capacity of 348.2 mAh/g at 0.1.C and a reversible capacity of 347.8 mAh/g after 1.0 ***,compared with commercial graphite,FSCC-CL exhibited better reversibility and cycle ***,purified SCC is an important candidate for anode material,and the flotation-acid leaching purification method is suitable for the resourceful recycling of SCC.
