Orthogonal waveform design with fractional programming on the ambiguity suppression of SAR systems

Waveform diversity(WD) represents a dynamic and transformative technology widely used in radar systems to enhance sensitivity and discrimination capabilities. Recently, WD techniques have been extensively explored for their potential ambiguity suppression within synthetic aperture radar(SAR) *** these, the alternate transmitting mode combined with orthogonal waveforms emerges as a particularly promising solution. This study focuses on optimizing the power spectrum density(PSD) of signals to design and generate an orthogonal waveform pair that achieves both a low cross-correlation-to-autocorrelation ratio(CAR) and satisfactory imaging performance. Initially, we construct a fractional programming model with convex constraints to minimize the CAR. To address this challenge, we introduce an iterative optimization procedure for the PSD variable, which sequentially reduces the CAR. Each optimization step can be efficiently solved using a quadratically constrained quadratic program, ensuring that the resulting computational complexity remains low. Building on the optimized PSD, we established a parametric piecewise linear model to generate an orthogonal waveform pair. This model not only maintains a low CAR but achieves satisfactory imaging performance in real-time applications. Consequently, this orthogonal waveform pair effectively suppresses range ambiguity in SAR systems. Finally, we demonstrated the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed orthogonal waveforms through detailed simulation experiments, specifically targeting ambiguity suppression in conventional quad-polarization SAR systems.

Retrieval of high spatial resolution mountainous land surface temperature considering topographic and adjacency effects

Land surface temperature(LST) is a key parameter reflecting the interaction between land and atmosphere. Currently,thermal infrared(TIR) quantitative remote {1. technology is the only means to obtain large-scale, high spatial resolution LST. Accurately retrieving high spatial resolution mountainous LST(MLST) plays an important role in the study of mountain climate change. The complex terrain and strong spatial heterogeneity in mountainous areas change the geometric relationship between the surface and satellite sensors, affecting the radiation received by the sensors, and rendering the assumption of planar parallelism invalid. In this study, considering the influence of complex terrain in mountainous areas on atmospheric downward radiation and the thermal radiation contribution of adjacent pixels, a mountainous TIR radiative transfer model based on the sky view factor was developed. Combining with the atmospheric radiative transfer model MODTRAN 5.2, a nonlinear generalized split-window algorithm suitable for high spatial resolution MLST retrieval was constructed and applied to Landsat-9 TIRS-2satellite TIR remote {1. data. The analysis results indicate that neglecting the topographic and adjacency effects would lead to significant discrepancies in LST retrieval, with simulated data showing LST differences of up to 2.5 K. Furthermore, due to the lack of measured MLST in the field, the MLST accuracy obtained by this retrieval method was indirectly validated using the currently recognized highest-accuracy forward 3D radiative transfer model DART. The MLST and emissivity were input into the DART model to simulate the brightness temperature at the top of the atmosphere(TOA) of Landsat-9 band 1., and compared with the brightness temperature at TOA of Landsat-9 band 1.. The RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) for the two subregions was0.50 and 0.61.K, respectively, indicating that the method proposed can retrieve high-precision MLST.

Stacking is the process of overlaying inferred species potential distributions for multiple species based on outputs of bioclimatic envelope models(BEMs).The approach can be used to investigate patterns and processes of species *** data limitations on individual species distributions are inevitable,but how do they affect inferences of patterns and processes of species richness?We investigate the influence of different data sources on estimated species richness gradients in *** fitted BEMs using species distributions data for 334 bird species obtained from(1.global range maps,(2)regional checklists,(3)museum records and surveys,and(4)citizen science data using presence-only(Mahalanobis distance),presence-background(MAXENT),and presence–absence(GAM and BRT)*** species predictions were stacked to generate species richness ***,we show that different data sources and BEMs can generate spatially varying gradients of species *** environmental predictors that best explained species distributions also differed between data *** using citizen-based data had the highest accuracy,whereas those using range data had the lowest *** richness patterns estimated by GAM and BRT models were robust to data *** multiple data sets exist for the same region and taxa,we advise that explicit treatments of uncertainty,such as sensitivity analyses of the input data,should be conducted during the process of modeling.

Quantifying foliar trait variation and covariation in sun and shade leaves using leaf spectroscopy in eastern North America

Characterizing foliar trait variation in sun and shade leaves can provide insights into inter-and intra-species resource use strategies and plant response to environmental ***,datasets with records of multiple foliar traits from the same individual and including shade leaves are sparse,which limits our ability to investigate trait-trait,trait-environment relationships and trait coordination in both sun and shade *** presented a comprehensive dataset of 1. foliar traits from sun and shade leaves sampled with leaf spectroscopy,including 424 individuals of 1.0 plant species from 1. sites across eastern North *** investigated trait variation,covariation,scaling relationships with leaf mass,and the effects of environment,canopy position,and taxonomy on trait ***,sun leaves had higher leaf mass per area,nonstructural carbohydrates and total phenolics,lower mass-based chlorophyll a+b,carotenoids,phosphorus,and potassium,but exhibited species-specific *** between sun and shade leaf traits,and trait-environment relationships were overall consistent across *** main dimensions of foliar trait variation in seed plants were revealed including leaf economics traits,photosynthetic pigments,defense,and structural *** and canopy position collectively explained most of the foliar trait *** study highlights the importance of including intra-individual and intra-specific trait variation to improve our understanding of ecosystem *** findings have implications for efficient field sampling,and trait mapping with {1. sensing.

Improved simulation of winter wheat yield in North China Plain by using PRYM-Wheat integrated dry matter distribution coefficient

The accurate simulation of regional-scale winter wheat yield is important for national food security and the balance of grain supply and demand in ***,most remote {1. process models use the“biomass×harvest index(HI)”method to simulate regional-scale winter wheat ***,spatiotemporal differences in HI contribute to inaccuracies in yield simulation at the regional ***-series dry matter partition coefficients(Fr)can dynamically reflect the dry matter partition of winter *** this study,Fr equations were fitted for each organ of winter wheat using site-scale *** equations were then coupled into a process-based and remote {1.driven crop yield model for wheat(PRYM-Wheat)to improve the regional simulation of winter wheat yield over the North China Plain(NCP).The improved PRYM-Wheat model integrated with the fitted Fr equations(PRYM-Wheat-Fr)was validated using data obtained from provincial yearbooks.A 3-year(2000-2002)averaged validation showed that PRYM-Wheat-Fr had a higher coefficient of determination(R^(2)=0.55)and lower root mean square error(RMSE=0.94 t ha^(-1.)than PRYM-Wheat with a stable HI(abbreviated as PRYM-Wheat-HI),which had R^(2) and RMSE values of 0.30 and 1.62 t ha^(-1.,*** PRYM-Wheat-Fr model also performed better than PRYM-Wheat-HI for simulating yield in verification years(201.-201.).In conclusion,the PRYM-Wheat-Fr model exhibited a better accuracy than the original PRYM-Wheat model,making it a useful tool for the simulation of regional winter wheat yield.

Dear Editor,Electric vehicle(EV)sales have significantly grown over the years to fulfill growing demands for economic travel and greenhouse gas mitigation.1.However,the surge in the number of EVs has led to charging anxiety as users struggle to find an available charging station before running out of electricity,resulting in longer reserve and waiting times.2 Moreover,severe mobility restrictions caused by infectious diseases,such as coronavirus disease 201.(COVID-1.),have greatly affected people’s travel behavior3,4 and hindered their willingness to use EVs,given that charging in public spaces consumes time and increases the risk of contracting the virus.5 This implies that in the postpandemic era,in which individuals coexist with the virus,the interplay between the two important trends,namely vehicle electrification and mobility restrictions,can extensively affect people’s daily commuting by using EVs.

Cloud Top Pressure Retrieval Using Polarized and Oxygen A-band Measurements from GF5 and PARASOL Satellites

Changes in albedo and its radiative forcing of grasslands in East Asia drylands

Background Grasslands in drylands are increasingly influenced by human activities and climate change, leading to alterations in albedo and radiative energy balance among others. Surface biophysical properties and their interactions change greatly following disturbances. However, our understanding of these processes and their climatic impacts remains limited. In this study, we used multi-year observations from satellites and eddy-covariance towers to investigate the response of albedo to variables closely associated with human disturbances, including vegetation greenness（EVI） and surface soil volumetric water content（VWC）, as well as snow cover and clearness index（Ta） for their potential *** EVI and VWC during the growing season were the primary factors influencing albedo. EVI and VWC were negatively correlated with albedo, with VWC's total direct and indirect impacts being slightly smaller than those of EVI. During the non-growing season, snow cover was the most influential factor on albedo. VWC and Ta negatively affected albedo throughout the year. We estimated the impact of variations in EVI and VWC on climate to be in the range of 0.004 to 0.1.3 kg CO2m-2yr-1.n *** This study indicates the significant impacts of climate change and human disturbances on vulnerable grassland ecosystems from the perspective of altered albedo. Changes in vegetation greenness and soil properties induced by climate change and human activities may have a substantial impact on albedo, which in turn feedback on climate change, indicating that future climate policies should take this factor into consideration.
