Contrasting compositions of PM_(2.5)in Northern Thailand during La Nina(201.)and El Nino(201.)years

There have been a very limited number of systematic studies on PM_(2.5)compositions and their source contribution in Southeast *** study aims to explore the characteristics of PM_(2.5)composition collected in Chiang Mai(Thailand)during La Nina and El Nino years and to apportion their sources during smoke haze and non-haze *** average PM_(2.5)concentration of smoke haze episode in 201.(El Nino)was much higher than in 201.(La Nina).The ratios of organic carbon(OC)to elemental carbon(EC),as well as K(biomass burning(BB)tracer)to PM_(2.5),were higher during smoke haze episodes in 201. than in 201. indicating a significant influence from *** ratios of secondary organic carbon(SOC)levels to primary organic carbon(POC)levels during smoke haze episodes were higher than those in non-haze period,which indicated greater SOC contributions or more photo-oxidation of precursors in haze episodes with high ambient ***,the ratios of soil markers(Ca and Mg)during non-haze period were high implying that soil source contributed more to PM_(2.5)concentrations when there less BB *** positive Matrix Factorization(PMF)model revealed that the source of BB,characterized by high K fractions,was the largest contributor during smoke haze episodes accounting for 50%(201.)and 79%(201.).Climate conditions influence meteorological patterns,particularly during incidences of extreme weather such as droughts,which affect the scale and frequency of open burning and thus air pollution levels.

Persistent Variations in the East Asian Trough from March to April and the Possible Mechanism

The East Asian trough(EAT)profoundly influences the East Asian spring *** this study,the relationship of the EATs among the three spring months is *** analysis shows that the variation in March EAT is closely related to that of April *** empirical orthogonal function(EEOF)analysis also confirms the co-variation of the March and April *** positive/negative EEOF1.features the persistent strengthened/weakened EAT from March to *** investigation indicates that the variations in EEOF1.are related to a dipole sea surface temperature(SST)pattern over the North Atlantic and the SST anomaly over the tropical Indian *** dipole SST pattern over the North Atlantic,with one center east of Newfoundland Island and another east of Bermuda,could trigger a Rossby wave train to influence the EAT in March−*** SST anomaly over the tropical Indian Ocean can change the Walker circulation and influence the atmospheric circulation over the tropical western Pacific,subsequently impacting the southern part of the EAT in March−*** the SST factors,the Northeast Asian snow cover could change the regional thermal conditions and lead to persistent EAT anomalies from March to *** three impact factors are generally independent of each other,jointly explaining large variations in the EAT ***,the signals of the three factors could be traced back to February,consequently providing a potential prediction source for the EAT variation in March and April.

Learning about good nutrition with the 5-color front-of-package label"Nutri-Score":an experimental study

The Nutri-Score is a 5-color front-of-pack nutrition label designed to provide consumers with an easily understandable guideline to the healthiness of food *** impact that the Nutri-Score may have on consumers'choices is unclear since different experimental paradigms have found vastly different effect *** the present study,we have investigated how student participants change a hypothetical personal 1.daydietary plan after a learning phase during which they learn about the Nutri-Scores of the available food *** were instructed to compose a healthy diet plan in order that the question of whether the NutriScore would improve their ability to compose a healthy dietary plan could be investigated,independent of the question of whether they would apply this knowledge in their ordinary *** found a substantial(Cohen's d=0.86)positive impact on nutritional quality(as measured by the Nutrient Profiling System score of the Food Standards Agency)and a medium-sized(Cohen's d=0.43)reduction of energy *** content reduction was larger for participants who had initially composed plans with higher energy *** results suggest that the Nutri-Score has the potential to guide consumers to healthier food *** remains unclear,however,whether this potential will be reflected in real-life dietary choices.

Enhanced Cooling Efficiency of Urban Trees on Hotter Summer Days in 70 Cities of China

Increasing the urban tree cover percentage(TCP) is widely recognized as an efficient way to mitigate the urban heat island effect. The cooling efficiency of urban trees can be either enhanced or attenuated on hotter days, depending on the physiological response of urban trees to rising ambient temperature. However, the response of urban trees' cooling efficiency to rising urban temperature remains poorly quantified for China's cities. In this study, we quantify the response of urban trees' cooling efficiency to rising urban temperature at noontime [~1.30 LT(local time), LT=UTC+8] in 1.summers(June, July, and August) from 2003–1. in 70 economically developed cities of China based on satellite observations. The results show that urban trees have stronger cooling efficiency with increasing temperature, suggesting additional cooling benefits provided by urban trees on hotter days. The enhanced cooling efficiency values of urban trees range from 0.002 to 0.055℃ %-1.per 1. increase in temperature across the selected cities, with larger values for the lowTCP-level cities. The response is also regulated by background temperature and precipitation, as the additional cooling benefit tends to be larger in warmer and wetter cities at the same TCP level. The positive response of urban trees' cooling efficiency to rising urban temperature is explained mainly by the stronger evapotranspiration of urban trees on hotter *** results have important implications for alleviating urban heat risk by utilizing urban trees, particularly considering that extreme hot days are becoming more frequent in cities under global warming.

Chemical weathering processes in the Chinese Loess Plateau

Covered by erodible loess and affected by significant seasonal climate variations,chemical weathering in the Chinese Loess Plateau(abbreviated as CLP)has important effects on the hydrochemistry of the Yellow River and the global carbon ***,chemical weathering processes in the CLP are still *** on 296 river water samples in the CLP in the different seasons,hydrochemistry,weathering processes,and their controlling factors were *** waters in the CLP exhibited slightly alkalinity(pH=8.4±0.5)with much high total dissolved solids(TDS)values(691.81. mg/L).The water types of river water in the CLP were primarily SO_(4)^(2-)-Cl^(-)-Na^(+),HCO_(3)^(-)-Ca^(2+)-Mg^(2+),and SO_(4)^(2-)-Cl^(-)-Ca^(2+)-Mg^(2+).According to the forward model,evaporite dissolution has the largest contribution(55.1.±0.2%)to riverine solutes in the CLP,then followed by carbonate weathering(35.6%±0.2%)and silicate weathering(6.5%±0.1.).For spatio-temporal variations,the contribution of evaporite dissolution in the CLP decreased from northwest to southeast with higher proportion in the dry season,carbonate weathering increased from northwest to southeast with a higher proportion in the wet season,and silicate weathering showed minor spatio-temporal ***^(2+)and Mg^(2+)were affected by carbonate precipitation and/or incongruent calcite dissolution,and about 50%of samples exhibited cation exchange *** physical erosion rate in the CLP,which was 372±293 t·km^(-2)·yr^(-1.,varied greatly and was greater than those of other worldwide *** weathering rates in the CLP showed an increasing trend *** the wet season,high runoff led to the release of evaporite and carbonate from loess,while the interfacial reaction kinetic limited the increase of the silicate weathering *** CO_(2)consumption budget by carbonate weathering(6.1.1.^(1.)mol/yr)and silicate weathering(1.6×1.^(1.)mol/yr)in the CLP accounted for 0.29%and 0.08%of the global carb

Widespread forest fires pose significant challenges to the diverse communities of soil-dwelling organisms and the multiple ecosystem functions they ***,whether the biodiversity and interactions of various taxonomic groups respond to fire consistently in terms of direction and extent,and their relative role in regulating post-fire soil functioning,remains largely *** this study,we investigated whether the diversity and co-occurrence networks of soil organisms across various trophic levels(including bacteria,fungi,protists,and invertebrates)in subtropical forests exhibit consistent responses to ***,we investigated their contribution to regulating soil multifunctionality,which is measured by a range of soil extracellular enzyme activities,available nutrients and reduced potential fungal plant *** findings revealed that fire led to a decline in the richness of fungi,protists,and invertebrates,without significantly impacting bacterial *** also simplified the microbial co-occurrence networks while complexifying the invertebrate ***,soil multifunctionality tended to decrease with the richness of lower-trophic communities(i.e.,bacteria),whereas it increased with that of high-trophic communities(i.e.,protists and invertebrates).Moreover,fire indirectly influenced soil multifunctionality by altering biodiversity and network complexity,particularly pronounced in high-trophic ***,our results underscored the divergent vulnerability of biodiversity and networks to fires across taxa groups,highlighting the crucial role of biodiversity and interactions of higher trophic taxa groups in shaping the recovery and functionality of fire-affected soils.

Counteracting effects on ENSO induced by ocean chlorophyll interannual variability and tropical instability wave-scale perturbations in the tropical Pacific

Large perturbations in chlorophyll(Chl)are observed to coexist at interannual and tropical instability wave(TIW)scales in the tropical Pacific;at present,their combined effects on El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)through ocean biologyinduced heating(OBH)feedbacks are not understood ***,a hybrid coupled model(HCM)for the atmosphere and ocean physics-biogeochemistry(AOPB)in the tropical Pacific is adopted to quantify how ENSO can be modulated by Chl perturbations at interannual and TIW scales,individually or collectively,*** HCM-based sensitivity experiments demonstrate a counteracting effect on ENSO:the bio-climate feedback due to large-scale Chl interannual variability acts to damp ENSO through its impact on upper-ocean stratification and vertical mixing,whereas that due to TIW-scale Chl perturbations tends to amplify *** ENSO simulations are sensitively dependent on the ways Chl effects are represented at these different scales,it is necessary to adequately take into account these related differential Chl effects in climate modeling.A bias source for ENSO simulations is illustrated that is related with the Chl effects in the tropical Pacific,adding in a new insight into interactions between the climate system and ocean ecosystem on different scales in the *** results reveal a level of complexity of ENSO modulations resulting from Chl effects at interannual and TIW scales,which are associated with ocean biogeochemical processes and their interactions with physical processes in the tropical Pacific.
