Evaluation of slope stability through rock mass classification and kinematic analysis of some major slopes along NH-1. from Ramban to Banihal, North Western Himalayas

The network of Himalayan roadways and highways connects some remote regions of valleys or hill slopes,which is vital for India’s socio-economic *** to natural and artificial factors,frequency of slope instabilities along the networks has been increasing over last few *** of stability of natural and artificial slopes due to construction of these connecting road networks is significant in safely executing these roads throughout the *** rock mass classification methods are generally used to assess the strength and deformability of rock *** study assesses slope stability along the NH-1. of Ramban district of North Western *** structurally and non-structurally controlled rock mass classification systems have been applied to assess the stability conditions of 1. *** evaluating the stability of these slopes,kinematic analysis was performed along with geological strength index(GSI),rock mass rating(RMR),continuous slope mass rating(CoSMR),slope mass rating(SMR),and Q-slope in the present *** SMR gives three slopes as completely unstable while CoSMR suggests four slopes as completely *** stability of all slopes was also analyzed using a design chart under dynamic and static conditions by slope stability rating(SSR)for the factor of safety(FoS)of 1.2 and 1.respectively.Q-slope with probability of failure(PoF)1.gives two slopes as stable *** slope angle has been determined based on the Q-slope safe angle equation and SSR design chart based on the *** value ranges given by different empirical classifications were RMR(37-74),GSI(27.3-58.5),SMR(1.-59),and CoSMR(3.39-74.56).Good relationship was found among RMR&SSR and RMR&GSI with correlation coefficient(R 2)value of 0.81. and 0.6866,***,a comparative stability of all these slopes based on the above classification has been performed to identify the most critical slope along this road.

Estimating the frequency of traffic overloading on road bridges

Load limits,which appear to be routinely exceeded by trucks,occasionally result in road bridge ***,predicting failures is crucial for safeguarding road *** studies have largely focused on forecasting bridge failure event probability using the reliability analysis method,whilst occasionally accounting for vehicular overloading *** recently,a study has investigated design traffic overloading event frequency using generalised linear regression models(GLRMs),including a power component and negative binomial regressions(NBRs).However,as far as the authors know,artificial neural network models(ANNMs)have never been applied to this *** paper is an attempt to fill in these *** a frequencybased metric of traffic overloading was adopted as a driver of failure ***,two alternative‘frequency'models were specified,calibrated,and *** former was based on a GLRM,the latter on ***,these models were compared using regression plots(RPs),measures of errors(Mo Es)and the ratio between the number of observed vs predicted design load overcoming events to evaluate their *** models analysed more than 2 million weigh-in-motion(WIM)data records from a pilot station on a bridge on a heavily used ring road in Brescia(Italy).Results showed that ANNMs outperformed *** have a higher correlation coefficient(between predicted and target frequencies),lower Mo Es,and a closer-to-unity ratio(between predicted and target frequencies).These findings may increase prediction accuracy of design traffic overloading events and give road authorities more effective traffic management to protect bridges from load hazards.

A Bayesian multi-model inference methodology for imprecise momentindependent global sensitivity analysis of rock structures

Traditional global sensitivity analysis(GSA)neglects the epistemic uncertainties associated with the probabilistic characteristics(*** of distribution type and its parameters)of input rock properties emanating due to the small size of datasets while mapping the relative importance of properties to the model *** paper proposes an augmented Bayesian multi-model inference(BMMI)coupled with GSA methodology(BMMI-GSA)to address this issue by estimating the imprecision in the momentindependent sensitivity indices of rock structures arising from the small size of input *** methodology employs BMMI to quantify the epistemic uncertainties associated with model type and parameters of input *** estimated uncertainties are propagated in estimating imprecision in moment-independent Borgonovo’s indices by employing a reweighting approach on candidate probabilistic *** proposed methodology is showcased for a rock slope prone to stress-controlled failure in the Himalayan region of *** proposed methodology was superior to the conventional GSA(neglects all epistemic uncertainties)and Bayesian coupled GSA(B-GSA)(neglects model uncertainty)due to its capability to incorporate the uncertainties in both model type and parameters of *** Borgonovo’s indices estimated via proposed methodology provide the confidence intervals of the sensitivity indices instead of their fixed-point estimates,which makes the user more informed in the data collection *** performed with the varying sample sizes suggested that the uncertainties in sensitivity indices reduce significantly with the increasing sample *** accurate importance ranking of properties was only possible via samples of large ***,the impact of the prior knowledge in terms of prior ranges and distributions was significant;hence,any related assumption should be made carefully.

Effect of eccentric and inclined loading on the bearing capacity of strip footing placed on rock mass

This paper deals with the bearing capacity determination of strip footing on a rock mass in hilly area by considering the influence of inclined and eccentric loading. Applying the generalized HoekBrown failure criterion, the failure behavior of the rock mass is modeled with the help of the power cone programming in the lower bound finite element limit analysis framework. Using bearing capacity factor(Ns), the change in bearing capacity of the strip footing due to the occurrence of eccentrically inclined loading is presented. The variations of the magnitude of Ns are obtained by examining the effects of the Hoek-Brown rock mass strength parameters(uniaxial compressive strength(sci), disturbance factor(D), rock parameter(mi), and Geological Strength Index(GSI)) in the presence of different magnitudes of eccentricity(e) and inclination angle(λ) with respect to the vertical plane, and presented as design charts. Both the inclined loading modes, i.e., inclination towards the center of strip footing(+λ) and inclination away from the center of strip footing(-λ), are adopted to perform the investigation. In addition, the correlation between the input parameters and the corresponding output is developed by utilizing the artificial neural network(ANN). Additionally, from sensitivity analysis, it is observed that inclination angle(λ) is the most sensitive parameter. For practicing engineers, the obtained design equation and design charts can be beneficial to understand the bearing capacity variation in the existence of eccentrically inclined loading in mountain areas.

Significance of including lid thickness and particle shape factor in numerical modeling for prediction of particle trap efficiency of invert trap

Sediment accumulation on the bed of open sewers and drains reduces hydraulic efficiency and can cause localized *** invert traps installed underneath the bed of open sewers and drains can eliminate sediment build-up by catching sediment *** three-dimensional(3D)computational studies have examined the particle trapping performance of invert traps of different shapes and depths under varied sediment and flow conditions,considering particles as *** two-dimensional and 3D numerical modeling,researchers assumed the lid geometry to be a thin line and a plane,*** this 3D numerical study,the particle trapping efficiency of a slotted irregular hexagonal invert trap fitted at the flume bottom was examined by incorporating the particle shape factor of non-spherical sewage solid particles and the thicknesses of upstream and downstream lids over the trap in the discrete phase model of the ANSYS Fluent 2020 R1.*** volume of fluid(VOF)and the realizable k-turbulence models were used to predict the velocity *** two-dimensional particle image velocimetry(PIV)was used to measure the velocity field inside the invert *** results showed that the thicknesses of upstream and downstream lids affected the velocity field and turbulent kinetic energy at all flow *** joint impact of the particle shape factor and lid thickness on the trap efficiency was *** both the lid thickness and particle shape factor were considered in the numerical modeling,trap efficiencies were underestimated,with relative errors of-8.66%to-0.65%in comparison to the experimental values of Mohsin and Kaushal(201.).They were also lower than the values predicted by Mohsin and Kaushal(201.),which showed an overall overestimation with errors of-2.3%to 1..4%.

Deciphering the controlling factors for phase transitions in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks（ZIFs） feature complex phase transitions, including polymorphism,melting, vitrification, and polyamorphism. Experimentally probing their structural evolution during transitions involving amorphous phases is a significant challenge, especially at the medium-range length scale. To overcome this challenge, here we first train a deep learning-based force field to identify the structural characteristics of both crystalline and non-crystalline ZIF phases. This allows us to reproduce the structural evolution trend during the melting of crystals and formation of ZIF glasses at various length scales with an accuracy comparable to that of ab initio molecular dynamics, yet at a much lower computational cost. Based on this approach, we propose a new structural descriptor, namely, the ring orientation index, to capture the propensity for crystallization of ZIF-4(Zn（Im）2, Im = C3H3N2-) glasses, as well as for the formation of ZIF-zni(Zn（Im）2) out of the high-density amorphous phase. This crystal formation process is a result of the reorientation of imidazole rings by sacrificing the order of the structure around the zinc-centered tetrahedra. The outcomes of this work are useful for studying phase transitions in other metal-organic frameworks（MOFs） and may thus guide the development of MOF glasses.

The sloshing in a group of rigid cylindrical tanks with baffles and on soil foundation under horizontal excitation is studied *** solutions for the velocity potential are derived out by the liquid subdomain *** models with mass-spring oscillators are established to replace continuous *** with the least square technique,Chebyshev polynomials are employed to fit horizontal,rocking and horizontal-rocking coupling impedances of soil,respectively.A lumped parameter model for impedance is presented to describe the effects of soil on tank structures.A mechanical model for the soil-foundation-tank-liquid-baffle system with small amount of calculation and high accuracy is proposed using the substructure *** analytical solutions are in comparison with data from reported literature and numerical codes to validate the effectiveness and correctness of the *** dynamic properties and seismic responses of the soil-tank system are given for the baffle number,size and location as well as soil parameter.
