Temporal trends in organophosphorus pesticides use and concentrations in river water in Japan, and risk assessment

We reviewed organophosphorus pesticide use in Japan between 1.82 and 201. using data from the National Institute of Environmental Studies. Organophosphorus pesticide concentrations in river water throughout Japan were taken from the literature, and risk assessments were performed for some organophosphorus pesticides based on risk quotients and hazard quotients. Assessments were performed for 20 common pesticides,including insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. The amounts used decreased in the order: insecticides > herbicides > fungicides. Organophosphorus insecticide and fungicide use have decreased over the last four decades, but organophosphorus herbicide use has increased. During this period, annual organophosphorus pesticide use was the highest for chlorpyrifos(1.5,263 tons/year) and the lowest for glyphosate-sodium(8 tons/year). The ecotoxicological risk assessment indicated that diazinon and fenitrothion posed strong risks to the Japanese aquatic environment, and chlorpyrifos and malathion have moderate risks. None of the pesticides that were assessed posed significant risks to *** use of organophosphorus pesticides in Japan may cause strong risks to aquatic environments. These risks should be reassessed periodically.

Background:In the era of immunotherapy,neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy(NAIC)for the treatment of locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)is used clinically but lacks of high-level clinical *** study aimed to compare the safety and long-term efficacy of NAIC followed byminimally invasive esophagectomy(MIE)with those of neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NAC)followed by ***:A prospective,single-center,open-label,randomized phase Ⅲ clinical trial was conducted at Henan Cancer Hospital,Zhengzhou,*** were randomly assigned to receive either neoadjuvant toripalimab(240mg)plus paclitaxel(1.5 mg/m^(2))+cisplatin(75 mg/m^(2))(toripalimab group)or paclitaxel+cisplatin alone(chemotherapy group)every 3 weeks for 2 *** surgery,the toripalimab group received toripalimab(240 mg every 3 weeks for up to 6 months).The primary endpoint was event-free survival(EFS).The pathological complete response(pCR)and overall survival(OS)were key secondary *** events(AEs)and quality of life were also ***:Between May 1.,2020 and August 1.,2021.252 ESCC patients ranging fromT1.1.3M0 to T2-3N0-3M0were enrolled for interim analysis,with 1.7 in the toripalimab group and 1.5 in the chemotherapy *** 1.year EFS rate was 77.9%in the toripalimab group compared to 64.3%in the chemotherapy group(hazard ratio[HR]=0.62;95%confidence interval[CI]=0.39 to 1.00;P=0.05).The 1.year OS rates were 94.1.and 83.0%in the toripalimab and chemotherapy groups,respectively(HR=0.48;95%CI=0.24 to 0.97;P=0.037).The patients in the toripalimab group had a higher pCR rate(1..6%vs.4.6%;P=0.001..The rates of postoperative Clavien-Dindo grade Ⅲb or higher morbidity were 9.8%in the toripalimab group and 6.8%in the chemotherapy group,with no significant difference observed(P=0.460).The rates of grade 3 or 4 treatment-related AEs did not differ between the two groups(1..5%versus 1..4%).Conclusions:The interim results of this ongoing trial showed that in resec

Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper(TM) dataset have been used to estimate salinity in the coastal area of Hong Kong. Four adjacent Landsat TM images were used in this study, which was atmospherically corrected using the Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum(6S) radiative transfer code. The atmospherically corrected images were further used to develop models for salinity using Ordinary Least Square(OLS) regression and Geographically Weighted Regression(GWR) based on in situ data of October 2009. Results show that the coefficient of determination(R^2) of 0.42 between the OLS estimated and in situ measured salinity is much lower than that of the GWR model, which is two times higher(R^2 = 0.86). It indicates that the GWR model has more ability than the OLS regression model to predict salinity and show its spatial heterogeneity better. It was observed that the salinity was high in Deep Bay(north-western part of Hong Kong) which might be due to the industrial waste disposal, whereas the salinity was estimated to be constant(32 practical salinity units) towards the open sea.

Snow cover on the Tibetan Plateau(TP) has been shown to be essential for the East Asian summer *** this paper, we demonstrate that tropical cyclone(TC) 04B(1.99) in the northern Indian Ocean, which made landfall during the autumn of 1.99, may have contributed to climate anomalies over East Asia during the following spring and summer by increasing snow cover on the TP. Observations indicate that snow cover on the TP increased markedly after TC 04B(1.99) made landfall in October of 1.99. Sensitivity experiments, in which the TC was removed from a numerical model simulation of the initial field, verified that TC 04B(1.99) affected the distribution as well as increased the amount of snow on the TP. In addition, the short-term numerical modeling of the climate over the region showed that the positive snow cover anomaly induced negative surface temperature, negative sensible heat flux, positive latent heat flux, and positive soil temperature anomalies over the central and southern TP during the following spring and summer. These climate anomalies over the TP were associated with positive(negative) summer precipitation anomalies over the Yangtze River valley(along the southeastern coast of China).

It is well known that the right global dimension of a ring R is usually computed by the right derived functors of Hom and the left projective resolutions of right R-modules. In this paper, for a left coherent and right perfect ring R, we characterize the right global dimension of R, from another point of view, using the left derived functors of Hom and the right projective resolutions of right R-modules. It is shown that rD(R) ? n (n ? 2) if and only if the gl right Proj-dim M R ? n?2 if and only if Ext n?1.N,M) = 0 for all right R-modules N and M if and only if every (n?2)th Projcosyzygy of a right R-module has a projective envelope with the unique mapping property. It is also proved that rD(R) ? n (n ? 1. if and only if every (n?1.th Proj-cosyzygy of a right R-module has an epic projective envelope if and only if every nth Proj-cosyzygy of a right R-module is projective. As corollaries, the right hereditary rings and the rings R with rD(R) ? 2 are characterized.

Effectiveness of Music-Based Therapeutic Intervention on People with Dementia: A Rapid Review

Background: Dementia is a condition with progressive cognitive dysfunction and manifestation of both behavioral and psychosocial symptoms. Non-pharmacological measures such as music therapy are gaining importance since efficacy and safety of people with dementia have been questionable for pharmacological measures. Patient’s response to music is persistent even in the later stage of dementia. Aim: This rapid review aims to identify, analyze, evaluate, and summarize the best available evidence on the effectiveness of music-based therapeutic interventions among people with dementia. Method: CINAHL Cochrane Library, internet websites of rapid review producers, and reference lists were searched to identify articles for inclusion. Two reviewers independently screened the literature search results. Effectiveness, music-based therapeutic intervention, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, systematic review and systematic review with meta-analysis terms were used to abstract data from included studies. Main Findings: 1. SRs and SRs with meta-analysis were reviewed which revealed positive effect of music therapy on five major outcomes with 9 studies effect on behavioral outcome, 6 studies with positive effect on psychosocial outcome reducing anxiety, 6 with improved cognition, 1.study revealed with improved quality of life and 1.study revealed effect on physiological outcomes. Conclusion: Music therapy has positive effect on treatment of dementia but further studies with larger sample size and specified to single intervention should be conducted to provide generalisable and precise results on this topic.

Functional no-flow events and their identification in the Lower Yellow River

Based on the understandings of the relationship between the river runoff and the pri-mary functions of the Yellow River, this paper advances the concept of functional no-flow event that is different from the zero-discharge event occurring in the river. Factors reflecting the charac-teristics of functional no-flow events were analyzed and the criteria describing severity levels of the events were given from the cluster analysis with the measured data from 1.50 to 1.99. The results show that the severity level is subject to the critical water demand for river ecosystem protection. Using two critical water use demand scenarios for the Yellow River proposed by the authors and the Yellow River Water Conservancy Commission, different severity levels of functional no-flow events are identified. In addition, the differences between the zero-discharge and the functional no-flow events are discussed.

Editorial comment Translational medicine is a new discipline which aims to eliminate the barrier between preclinical and clinical medicine. Here, Dr. Li discusses the application of translational medicine in the research, teaching and clinical work of Prof. Liu Shih-Hao, the founder of endocrinology in China, who was particularly renowned for his early work in calcium and phosphorus metabolism. This well-known success story can be traced back to an early appreciation of translational medicine by Prof. Liu Shih-Hao, and serves as an important and revelatory lesson for us all.
