Aims Seed dispersal by endozoochory is an important process in plant regeneration and the establishment of new *** with dormancy may especially benefit after disperser gut ***,the ways in which gut passage affect the germination of plant species with physiological dormancy remain ***,we experimentally assessed the mutualistic interaction between the Austral parakeet(Enicognathus ferrugineus)as a disperser of calafate(Berberis microphylla),a thorny bush inhabiting the understory of the Austral temperate forests of South America with seeds that are characterized by deep physiological *** Germination success and viability of calafate seeds obtained from faeces and from intact fruits were tested under four treatments:(i)digested seeds,(ii)digested seeds with faecal extract,(iii)intact seeds from fruit and(iv)intact seeds from fruit with *** findings About 65%of the Austral parakeet droppings contained calafate *** of seeds did not differ between ***,germination was significantly higher in digested seeds than in intact seeds from fruits,while no difference was found between faecal and pulp *** faecal matter nor fruit pulp provided seeds with any ecological advantages derived from enhancing germinability,but did confer some disadvantage in germination *** matter is expected to be completely lacking around seeds after several months under snow before germinating in the following spring,given intense washing due to persistent rain and the spring thaw in the Patagonian *** higher germinability along with faster germination of digested seeds supports the hypothesis of a legitimate mutualistic interaction between Austral parakeets and *** hypothesized that the passage through the disperser digestive tract might break physiological dormancy as differences in germinability between ingested and non-ingested *** results highlight the relevant role of endoz

The Rocky Planets’ Magnetic field: A new Parameter for the Drake’s formula

The Drake formula is a statistical method of forecasting the possible number n of technically evolved extraterrestrial and galactic civilizations able to communicate with the human species. It is based on seven different factors that can be grouped into factors of type A, fA (“Astrophysicist”) and type B, fB (“Astrobiological”). The quantitative analysis of these factors at the time of the presentation of the formula was subjective and highly variable for both factors fA and fB. Current scientifical and technological development has made it possible to refine the quantitative estimates of the fA group whose definition is now less uncertain. In group fA the parameter ne is understood as the number of planets capable of sustaining life. By means of ne Drake defines this possibility exclusively from the geometric point of view. In particular, the planet’s orbit must be included in the circumstellar space in which the planetary temperature allows the presence of liquid water. This is not enough because, for liquid (and gaseous) water to be present on the planet’s surface, it is also essential that the planet has a magnetic field of adequate intensity to shield the flow of charged particles coming from its star (solar wind). The solar wind is able to break up and disperse the liquid and gaseous water molecules and any organic molecules in times much shorter than theoretically necessary for the formation of life and above all, except for singularities, than necessary for evolution to arrive at intelligent life. Here the planetary magnetic field parameter nm is introduced into the Drake formula and its statistical probability of existence is discussed.

Estimation of visceral fat is useful for the diagnosis of significant fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Social media is commonly used by governments to disseminate information related to transparency and institutional promotion,but its potential for the dissemination of cultural resources is often *** research proposes a strategy for adopting social media to achieve cultural dissemination in the municipality of Lamas,Peru,which has tourism potential and has been awarded the“Best Tourism Villages”seal of the World Tourism ***,we propose a case study at a propositional exploratory *** start by determining the current state of dissemination of tangible and intangible resources,as well as the practical use of social media,through a survey of 20 *** results reveal that crafts are the most widely disseminated tangible resource in the municipality(according to 55%of officials),and intangible resources are occasionally disseminated(50%).We also find that facebook is the only digital channel used to disseminate cultural *** this context,we formulate a strategy for adopting social media to improve cultural dissemination,which consists of six phases:(i)forming a work team,(ii)preparing a budget plan,(iii)strengthening capacities,(iv)taking inventory of cultural resources,(v)coordinating community interests and(vi)preparing a cultural dissemination *** findings can contribute to formulating public initiatives for the institutionalisation of social media in governments for the purposes of preserving,promoting and guaranteeing the accessibility of cultural heritage.

Usefulness of the COnUT index upon hospital admission as a potential prognostic indicator of COVID-19 health outcomes

Background:In-hospital mortality in patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is *** prognostic indices are needed to identify patients at high-risk of COVID-19 health *** aimed to determine the usefulness of the COntrolling nUTritional status(COnUT)index as a potential prognostic indicator of mortality in COVID-19 patients upon hospital ***:Our study design is of a retrospective observational study in a large cohort of COVID-19 *** addition to descriptive statistics,a Kaplan-Meier mortality analysis and a Cox regression were performed,as well as receiver operating curve(ROC).Results:from february 5,2020 to January 21,2021,there was a total of 2969 admissions for COVID-19 at our hospital,corresponding to 2844 ***,baseline(within 4 days of admission)COnUT index could be scored for 1627(57.2%)***’age was 67.3±16.5 years and 44.9%were *** COnUT severity distribution was:194(11.9%)normal(0-1);769(47.2%)light(2-4);585(35.9%)moderate(5-8);and 79(4.9%)severe(9-12).Mortality of 30 days after admission was 3.1%in patients with normal risk COnUT,9.0%light,22.7%moderate,and 40.5%in those with severe COnUT(Pn increased risk of death associated with a greater baseline COnUT stage was sustained in a multivariable Cox regression model(Pn increasing baseline COnUT stage was associated with a longer duration of admission,a greater requirement for the use of non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation,and other clinical outcomes(all Pf COnUT for mortality had an area under the curve(AUC)and 95%confidence interval of 0.711(0.676-0746).Conclusion:The COnUT index upon admission is potentially a reliable and independent prognostic indicator of mortality and length of hospitalization in COVID-19 patients.

The Barone-Adesi Whaley formula to Price American Options Revisited

This paper presents a method to solve the American option pricing problem in the Black Scholes framework that generalizes the Barone-Adesi, Whaley method [1]. An auxiliary parameter is introduced in the American option pricing problem. Power series expansions in this parameter of the option price and of the corresponding free boundary are derived. These series expansions have the Baroni-Adesi, Whaley solution of the American option pricing problem as zero-th order term. The coefficients of the option price series are explicit formulae. The partial sums of the free boundary series are determined solving numerically nonlinear equations that depend from the time variable as a parameter. numerical experiments suggest that the series expansions derived are convergent. The evaluation of the truncated series expansions on a grid of values of the independent variables is easily parallelizable. The cost of computing the n-th order truncated series expansions is approximately proportional to n as n goes to infinity. The results obtained on a set of test problems with the first and second order approximations deduced from the previous series expansions outperform in accuracy and/or in computational cost the results obtained with several alternative methods to solve the American option pricing problem [1]-[3]. for example when we consider options with maturity time between three and ten years and positive cost of carrying parameter (i.e. when the continuous dividend yield is smaller than the risk free interest rate) the second order approximation of the free boundary obtained truncating the series expansions improves substantially the Barone-Adesi, Whaley free boundary [1]. We present a coupled thermal-fluid model for Benard-Marangoni convection in a three-dimensional fluid *** governing equations are derived in detail for two reasons:first,we do not assume a flat free surface as commonly done;and second,we prepare for the use of flexible *** governing equations are discretized using spectral elements in space and an operator splitting approach in *** we are here primarily interested in steady state solutions,the focus is on the spatial *** overall computational approach is very attractive to use for several reasons:(i)the solution can be expected to have a high degree of regularity,and rapid convergence can be expected;(ii)the spectral element decomposition automatically gives a convenient parameterization of the free surface that allows powerful results from differential geometry to easily be exploited;(iii)free surface deformation can readily be included;(iv)both normal and tangential stresses are conveniently accounted for through a single surface integral;(v)no differentiation of the surface tension is necessary in order to include thermocapillary effects(due to integration-byparts twice);(vi)the geometry representation of the free surface need only be C0 across element boundaries even though curvature effects are ***-dimensional simulation results are presented,including the free surface deflection due to buoyancy and thermocapillary effects.
