Altered Expression of Nicotinic Receptors in Perinatal Life Related to Prenatal Exposure to Toxics—An Overview of the research Carried Out on This Topic at the “lino rossi” research center of the Milan University

The article aims to underline the impact of nicotine and pesticides on neuronal α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors expression in brainstem regions receiving cholinergic projections, given their fundamental role during the neuronal development. The in-depth histopathological/immunohistochemical examination of the autonomic nervous system performed at the “lino rossi” research center of the Milan University on a wide group of sudden unexpected fetal and infant deaths, highlighted the frequent hypodevelopment of brainstem structures checking the vital functions associated to altered expression of α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and smoke absorption in pregnancy. A dysregulation of the catecholamine system was also observed in the cerebellar cortex of the same cases. However, in a not negligible percentage of sudden deaths with altered expression of α7-nicotinic receptors, the mothers never smoked but lived in rural areas. Specific analytical procedures showed the presence of agricultural pesticides in cerebral cortex samples of these victims. Therefore, it is possible to believe that the exposition to pesticides during pregnancy can produce the same harmful effects as nicotine on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Moreover, alterations of α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptors receptor expression were also detected in the lungs of many sudden perinatal death victims, allowing to consider even these findings as possible consequence of maternal exposure to toxic factors.

Unsuspected imported malaria in a case of sudden infant death

Here we describe the case of a 4-mo-old female who died suddenly without any apparent cause that was initially mistaken as a case of sudden infant death syndrome. Histologic observation of brain sections revealed blue-black bodies in erythrocytes of the blood vessels, suggestive of specific stages of the hematic schizogonic cycle. Further examinations revealed hemozoin and hemosiderin deposits in the parenchyma of all organs, leading to the diagnosis of malaria by Plasmodium falciparum(P. falciparum). The death occurred in Italy, the native country of the infant, two weeks after a Christmas holiday spent in Pakistan, the parents' birthplace, which has a high malarial endemicity. As this case demonstrates, the diagnosis of malaria should always be considered as a differential diagnosis in subjects, including infants, that die unexpectedly after returning from P. falciparum endemic areas.

Simultaneous Multi-Wavelength Observations of the TeV Blazar Mrk 421 during February-March,2003:X-Ray and NIR Correlated Variability

We report the result of simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of the TeV blazar Mrk 421 during February - March 2003. We observed Mrk 421 using the Pachmarhi Array of Cerenkov Telescopes （PACT） of Tata Institute of Fundamental research at Pachmarhi, India. Other simultaneous data were taken from the literature and public data archives. We have analyzed the high quality X-ray （2-20 keV） observations from the NASA rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer （RXTE）. We obtained a possible correlated variability between X-ray and J band （1.25 μ） near infrared （NIR） wavelength. This is the first case of X-ray and NIR correlated variability in Mrk 421 or any high energy peaked （HBL） blazar. The correlated variability reported here indicates a similar origin for the NIR and X-ray emissions. The emission is not affected much by the environment of the surrounding medium of the central engine of Mrk 421. The observations are consistent with the shock-in-jet model for the emissions.

Understanding the mechanism of oxidative stress is likely to yield new insights regarding the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Our earlier work focused on the difference between hemoglobin and methemoglobin degradation, respectively leading to ferrous (Fe2+) iron, or ferric (Fe3+) iron. Methemoglobin has the role of carrier, the donor of cytotoxic and redox-active ferric (Fe3+) iron, which can directly accumulate and increase the rate of capillary endothelial cell apoptosis, and may cross into the brain parenchyma, to the astrocytes, glia, neurons, and other neuronal cells (neurovascular unit). This supposition helps us to understand the transport and neuronal accumulation process of ferric iron, and determine how iron is transported and accumulated intracellularly, identifiable as “Brain rust”. Earlier research found that the incidences of neonatal jaundice (p = 0.034), heart murmur (p = 0.011) and disorders such as dyslalia and learning/memory impairments (p = 0.002) were significantly higher in those children born from mothers with methemoglobinemia. Our hypothesis suggests that prenatal iron abnormalities could lead to greater neuronal death, the disease ageing process, and neurodegenerative disorders such as AD and other neurodegenerative diseases.

High-voltage(>4.0 V)lithium metal battery(LBM)is considered to be one of the most promising candidates for next-generation high-energy ***,the commercial carbonate electrolyte delivers a poor compatibility with Li metal anode,and its organic dominated solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)shows a low interfacial energy and a slow Li^(+)diffusion *** this work,an inorganic LiF-Li_(3)N rich SEI is designed to enable high-voltage LBM by introducing nano-cubic LiF and lino_(3)into1 M LiPF_(6)ethylene carbonate(EC)/dimethyl carbonate(DMC)(v:v=1:1)***,the unique nano-cubic structure of as-synthetized LiF particles achieves its high concentration dissolution in carbonate electrolyte to enhance the interfacial energy of *** addition,tetramethylene sulfolane(TMS)is used as a carrier solvent to dissolve lino_(3)in the carbonate electrolyte,thereby deriving a Li_(3)N-rich *** a result,the as-designed electrolyte shows a high average Li plating/striping CE of 98.3%after 100 cycles at 0.5 m A cm^(-2)/0.5 mA h cm^(-2).Furthermore,it also enables the ultrathin Li(~50μm)‖LiNi_(0.8)Co_(0.1)Mn_(0.1)O_(2)(NCM,4.4 mA h cm^(-2))full cell to deliver a high-capacity retention of 80.4%after 100 cycles with an outstanding average CE of 99.7%.Notably,the practical application prospect of the modified electrolyte is also estimated in LiNi_(0.8)Co_(0.1)Mn_(0.1)O_(2)‖Li pouch cell with an energy density of 261.2 W h kg^(-1).This work sheds light on the internal mechanism of Li^(+)transport within the inorganic dominated SEI and provides a simple approach to stabilize the high-voltage LMBs.

Objective: To investigate the genetic diversity of Zika virus(ZIKV) and the relationships existing among these circulating viruses worldwide. To evaluate the genetic polymorphisms harboured from ZIKV that can have an influence on the virus circulation. Methods: Three different ZIKV dataset were built. The first dataset included 63 E gene sequences, the second one 22 NS3 sequences and the third dataset was composed of 108 NS5 gene sequences. Phylogenetic and selective pressure analysis was performed. The edited nucleic acid alignment from the Envelope dataset was used to generate a conceptual translation to the corresponding peptide sequences through UGene software. Results: The phylogeographic reconstruction was able to discriminate unambiguously that the Brazilian strains are belonged to the Asian lineage. The structural analysis reveals instead the presence of the Ser residue in the Brazilian sequences(however already observed in other previously reported ZIKV infections) that could suggest the presence of a neutralization-resistant population of viruses. Conclusions: Phylogenetic, evolutionary and selective pressure analysis contributed to improve the knowledge on the circulation of ZIKV.

AIM: To analyze contrast-enhanced ultrasound(CEUS) features of histologically proven hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma(HEHE) in comparison to other multilocular benign focal liver lesions(FLL).METHODS: Twenty-five patients with histologically proven HEHE and 45 patients with histologically proven multilocular benign FLL were retrospectively reviewed. Four radiologists assessed the CEUS enhancement pattern in ***: HEHE manifested as a single(n = 3) or multinodular(n = 22) FLL. On CEUS, HEHE showed rim-like(18/25, 72%) or heterogeneous hyperenhancement(7/25, 28%) in the arterial phase and hypoenhancement(25/25, 100%) in the portal venous and late phases(PVLP), a sign of malignancy. Eighteen patients showed central unenhanced areas(18/25, 72%); in seven patients(7/25, 28%), more lesions were detected in the PVLP. In contrast, all patients with hemangioma and focal nodular hyperplasia showed hyperenhancement as the most distinctive feature(P < 0.01).CONCLUSION: CEUS allows for characterization of unequivocal FLL. By analyzing the hypoenhancement in the PVLP, CEUS can determine the malignant nature of HEHE.
