Highly transparent ytterbium doped yttrium lanthanum oxide ceramics

To prepare ytterbium doped lanthania yttria nanopowder a method of laser evaporation of mixed oxides was used. After calcinations of the powder at 1200 ℃ a pure single-phase solid solution yb3＋：（LaxY1-x）2O3 was formed in the nanoparticles. Influence of lanthanum oxide as an isovalent additive on the yttria structure was investigated. The lanthanium ions were proved to be a good aid to sinter yttria ceramics doped with Yb3＋ at moderate temperatures about 1650 ℃. The ceramics with relative density higher than 99.99% and grain size about 40 μm were fabricated. Full transmittance of 1.8 mm thick Yb0.11 La0.23Y1.66O3 ceramics reached 82.5% at 800 nm. This material could be a good gain medium for ytterbium high power pulse lasers.

Effect of Yb_2O_3 doping on the grain boundary of NiFe_2O_4–10NiO-based cermets after sintering

xYb2O3-15（20Ni-Cu）/（85 -x）（NiFe2O4-10NiO）（x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 2.0, and 10.0） cermets for aluminum electrolysis were prepared to investigate the effect ofYb2O3 doping on the grain boundary of the cermets after sintering. The results showed that each interface was very clear and that with increasing Yb2O3 content, most of the Yb was evenly distributed at the grain boundary. Moreover, according to the phase composition and microstructural analysis by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （SEM/EDX）, and electron probe microanalysis （EPMA）, YbFeO3 was produced along the grain boundary. The YbFeO3 was concluded to not only have formed from the interaction between the NiFe2O4 or Fe2O3 component and Yb2O3 at the grain boundary of the cermets, but also from the decomposition of NiFe2O4 into NiO and Fe2O3 and the subsequent reaction of Fe2O3 with Yb2O3. Thus, the production of YbFeO3 resulted in a cermet with high relative density, good electrical conductivity, and good corrosion resistance.

Experimental investigation and feasibility analysis of a thermophotovoltaic cogeneration system in high-temperature production processes

The experimental I- Vcharactefistics ofa Si cell module in a thermophotovoltaic （TPV） system were investigated using SiC or Yb203 radiator. The results demonstrate that the short-circuit current increases while the open-circuit voltage, along with the fill factor, decreases with the cell temperature when the radiator temperature increases from 1273 to 1573 K, leading to a suppressed increase of the output power of the system. The maximum output power density of the cell module is 0.05 W/cm2 when the temperature of the SiC radiator is 1573 K, while the electrical efficiency of the system is only 0.22%. The efficiency is 1.3% with a Yb203 radiator at the same temperature, however, the maximum output power density drops to 0.03 W/cm2. The values of the open-circuit voltage and the maximum output power obtained from the theoretical model conform to the experimental ones. But the theoretical short-circuit current is higher because of the existence of the contact resistance inside the cell module. In addition, the performance and cost of TPV cogeneration systems with the SiC or Yb203 radiator using industrial high-temperature waste heat were analyzed. The system electrical efficiency could reach 3.1% with a Yb203 radiator at 1573K. The system cost and investment recovery period are 6732 EUR/kWel and 14 years, respectively.
