As global agriculture intensifies,cultural knowledge of wetland utilization has eroded as natural resources become more stressed,and marginal farmers move away from the land.The excellent paper by Fawzi et al.(2016)documents a particularly poignant case of traditional knowledge loss among the Marsh Arab women of Iraq.Through interviews,the authors document the breakdown of skill transfer from the older to younger generation of women.The authors link the loss of their cultural knowledge with the loss of wetlands in the region.Women can no longer provide support for their families using wetland products,and along with that,their ancient knowledge of plant usage is lost.These ancient skills included medicinal uses,and reed harvesting for both weaving and water buffalo fodder.As,the majority of the Mesopotamian Marshes have dried,this way of life is being forgotten(Fawzi et al.2016).The global tragedy is that while the careful alliance of wetlands and people have sustained human cultures for millennia,degraded wetlands lose their ability to provide these services(Maltby 1986).

Background:Respiratory syncytial virus(RSV)is the dominant cause of severe lower respiratory tract infection in infants,with the most severe cases concentrated among younger infants.Methods:Healthy pregnant women,at 28 weeks 0 days through 36 weeks 0 days of gestation,with an expected delivery date near the start of the RSV season,were randomly assigned in an overall ratio of approximately 2:1 to receive a single intramuscular dose of RSV fusion(F)protein nanoparticle vaccine or placebo.

In horticulture,grafting is a popular technique used to combine positive traits from two different plants.This is achieved by joining the plant top part(scion)onto a rootstock which contains the stem and roots.Rootstocks can provide resistance to stress and increase plant production,but despite their wide use,the biological mechanisms driving rootstock-induced alterations of the scion phenotype remain largely unknown.Given that epigenetics plays a relevant role during distance signalling in plants,we studied the genome-wide DNA methylation changes induced in eggplant(Solanum melongena)scion using two interspecific rootstocks to increase vigour.We found that vigour was associated with a change in scion gene expression and a genome-wide hypomethylation in the CHH context.Interestingly,this hypomethylation correlated with the downregulation of younger and potentially more active long terminal repeat retrotransposable elements(LTR-TEs),suggesting that graft-induced epigenetic modifications are associated with both physiological and molecular phenotypes in grafted plants.Our results indicate that the enhanced vigour induced by heterografting in eggplant is associated with epigenetic modifications,as also observed in some heterotic hybrids.

Background:After promising initial results from the administration of a third(booster)dose of the BNT162b2 messenger RNA vaccine(Pfizer-BioNTech)to persons 60 years of age or older,the booster campaign in Israel was gradually expanded to persons in younger age groups who had received a second dose at least 5 months earlier.Methods:We extracted data for the period from July 30 to October 10,2021,from the Israel Ministry of Health database regarding 4,696,865 persons 16 years of age or older who had received two doses of BNT162b2 at least 5 months earlier.In the primary analysis,we compared the rates of confirmed coronavirus disease 2019(Covid-19),severe illness,and death among those who had received a booster dose at least 12 days earlier(booster group)with the rates among those who had not received a booster(nonbooster group).In a secondary analysis,we compared the rates in the booster group with the rates among those who had received a booster 3 to 7 days earlier(early postbooster group).We used Poisson regression models to estimate rate ratios after adjusting for possible confounding factors.

As a native Chinese person living overseas and a sociologist of education studying Chinese diaspora,I opened this book with great interest.After reading the first few pages I quickly became absorbed in Guo’s work.It deviates from the bulk of literature about intercultural practices within the family milieu of Chinese immigrants.Much extant work interrogates the intergenerational reproduction of Chinese heritage in a diasporic context,where Chineseness is transmitted from older generations to younger generations,through a trajectory full of potholes and distractions,coupled with opportunities and benefits.Guo’s work differs,however,in its contemplation of the culture flow in a reverse direction:How Chinese children help acculturate and socialize their immigrant parents in Britain.
