Rotating yarn loops, which are called balloons in the textile industry, play an important role in the yarn manufacturing process. The shape of spinning balloon is closely related to yarn tension which has a direct impact on yarn quality and breakage rate. A new model proposed in this paper includes the influences of delivery speed of the yarn, both tangential and normal direction air drag, gravitational force on the yarn, inertia of the traveller and tension of the yarn. The non-linear differential equations under cylindrical coordinates about the curve of spinning balloon are set up by dynamic analysis. Numerical solutions to the differential equations are obtained. This model can be used to simulate balloon shape and predict yarn tension under given spinning conditions and facilitate further research into the reduction of yarn breakage in ring spinning.
