Selective capture and separation of xenon and krypton using metal organic frameworks: a review

xenon and krypton are widespread useful noble gases in commercial lighting, lasers, electronics, and medical industry. At the same time, radioactive noble gases may proliferate from used nuclear fuel and diffuse in open atmospheres. Metal organic frameworks as hotspot porous materials for gases uptake and separation are considered to be potential solutions. In this review, we comprehensively summarized recent researches on metal organic frameworks for selective capture and separation of xenon and krypton. Particularly, we followed the aspects of different optimal design strategies, including optimal pore/cage size and geometry, open metal sites, ions (anions and cations), and polar functional groups for enhancing the xenon adsorption and separation performances. Meanwhile, a comparison of each strategy and the mechanisms of xenon/krypton separation were pointed out. The separation of krypton from gases mixtures by dual-bed systems was further discussed. Finally, some existing challenges and opportunities for possible real applications were proclaimed.

The static adsorption performances of a series of active carbon fiber(ACF)for xenon at 201 K were measured with a model ASAP2010M specific surface area and aperture distribution instrument by changing the working gas of instrument from N 2 to xenon. Compared with grain active carbon(GAC): (1) the adsorption performance of Viscose based ACF(VACF) adsorbents is better than that of GAC; (2) owing to the difference of aperture distribution, the adsorption performance of ACF with different radicales is different under the same experiment conditions though the specific surface area is similar; (3) there is no definite relationship between adsorption performance and specific surface area; (4) the VACF A2 is the superior xenon adsorbent at the experimental temperature.

The xenon pumping speed testing system of the large-diameter external cryopump was designed to meet the plume test requirements for prototype electric *** flowmeter method was utilized to measure the xenon pumping *** test results show that the averaged effective pumping speed of doublecryopumps is 52 200L/s,and that of single-cryopump is 27 100L/*** pumping speed ratio of two configurations is *** can be concluded that the pumping speed has in linear relationship with the number of cryopump,and the coefficient is irrelevant with the gas *** averaged effective pumping speed of xenon is less than its nominal pumping speed,and the averaged pumping efficiency is *** the identical inflow conditions,the averaged effective pumping speed ratio of nitrogen is 0.53,slightly less than the theoretical pumping speed ratio of ***,it can be concluded that results assessment of large-diameter external cryopump design index can guide the engineering application,showing certain reference significance.

Delayed xenon post-conditioning mitigates spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury in rabbits by regulating microglial activation and inflammatory factors

The neuroprotective effect against spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats exerted by delayed xenon post-conditioning is stronger than that produced by immediate xenon post-conditioning. However, the mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. Activated microglia are the main inflammatory cell type in the nervous system. The release of pro-inflammatory factors following microglial activation can lead to spinal cord damage, and inhibition of microglial activation can relieve spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury. To investigate how xenon regulates microglial activation and the release of inflammatory factors, a rabbit model of spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury was induced by balloon occlusion of the infrarenal aorta. After establishment of the model, two interventions were given：（1） immediate xenon post-conditioning—after reperfusion, inhalation of 50% xenon for 1 hour, 50% N2/50%O2 for 2 hours; （2） delayed xenon post-conditioning—after reperfusion, inhalation of 50% N2/50%O2 for 2 hours, 50% xenon for 1 hour. At 4, 8, 24, 48 and 72 hours after reperfusion, hindlimb locomotor function was scored using the Jacobs locomotor scale. At 72 hours after reperfusion, interleukin 6 and interleukin 10 levels in the spinal cord of each group were measured using western blot assays. Iba1 levels were determined using immunohistochemistry and a western blot assay. The number of normal neurons at the injury site was quantified using hematoxylin-eosin staining. At 72 hours after reperfusion, delayed xenon post-conditioning remarkably enhanced hindlimb motor function, increased the number of normal neurons at the injury site, decreased Iba1 levels, and inhibited interleukin-6 and interleukin-10 levels in the spinal *** xenon post-conditioning did not noticeably affect the above-mentioned indexes. A pulse-discharge helium ionization detector（Valco, PD-D3-I） was used to measure xenon concentration in air. The dependences of the detector relative response on various gas chromatograph parameters were investigated. Based on the well prepared gas connections for the detector system and optimized gas chromatography（GC） working conditions, the atmospheric xenon concentration could be measured by the cheap GC method with a detection level of 0.7×10-9（parts by volume）. Moreover, the xenon concentration in the ground level air around our laboratory was measured with the result of 0.085×10-6（parts by volume） and RSD of 0.91%.

Influence of different illuminations with xenon or microwave sulfur lamp on jointing and tillering of wheat

The emission of microwave sulfur lamp is mainly composed of visible light. The sulfur lamp, producing little infrared radiation, has high efficiency, long duration of illumination and less energy consumption. In order to probe the agricultural application of the lamp, experiments were carried out with wheat (cv. Yangmai 158) to emphatically study illuminating effects of xenon or sulfur lamp on tillering, jointing and net photosynthetic rate during tillering and jointing periods. Results indicated that there is almost no difference in net photosynthetic rate of wheat leaves growing under different lamps. xenon lamp significantly advanced the time of jointing, decreased number of tillers, number of total leaves per plant and leaf size, as well as inhibited root growth. In contrast with xenon lamp, sulfur lamp evidently delays the time of heading and grain maturation, increased number of heads per plant, head length, total number of grains per plant, head weight and total grain weight per plant,

The static adsorption of xenon on active carbon fiber (ACF) at 257 K was measured with ASAP2010 specific surface area and pore diameter distribution instrument by changing the working gas from nitrogen to xenon. Compared with grain activated carbon. (GAC), the results were as follows: (1) The adsorption performance of Viscose-based ACF (VACF-A(S)) was the best among all absorbents tested. VACF-A(3) was the superior xenon absorbent. The performance of pitch-based ACF (PACF-C-S) approached that of GAC, (2) Due to the difference of aperture distribution, the adsorption performances of ACF with different radics were different under the same experiment conditions even though the specific surface area was similar, (3) There were some differences of adsorptive capacity among ACF absorbents which had the same radic, however there was not definite relationship between their specific surface area and adsorptive capacity, (4) The adsorption of xenon on all kinds of ACF agrees with Langmuir equation, (5) The adsorptive curves can be fitted with a binomial equation.
