A Nim-type computer game of strategy on plane is described in this paper. It is demonstrated that winning strategies of this two-person game are determined by a system of equations with two unknown integer sequences. Properties of winning points/states are discussed and an O(loglogn) algorithm for the winning states is provided. Two varieties of the Game are also introduced and their winning strategies are analyzed.

Point spreads and money lines from sports wagering markets are used to evaluate the impressiveness of team streaks. Sports wagering data have previously been useful in assessing competitive balance in sports. Our approach was motivated by the amount of media scrutiny that accompanied the winning streak of the NBA’s Miami Heat and the point streak of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks which occurred simultaneously for the most part in 2013. The topic came to the forefront again with the 2014-2015 winning streak of the Atlanta Hawks. Three streaks are highlighted in our paper. The length of the streaks, the quality of the competition, injuries, and a variety of other factors were mentioned in the media but the discussion was limited to subjective opinions as no way of properly weighing relative influence of the factors was identified. Wagering markets provide an excellent source of information for making these judgments. Several complementary measures are described and the most impressive team streaks within and across professional baseball, basketball, football, and ice hockey are identified.

CAS Projects winning State S&T Awards in 2005

At the National S&T Conference held on 9 January, 2006 in Beijing, CAS received 43 prizes from China's 2005 S&T awards in the capacity of the lead research institution (or principal researcher). Among the prize-winning projects, 17 were honored with the second prizes of the National Award for Natural Sciences, eight with the second prizes of the National Award for Invention, and 18 with the second prizes from the National Award for S&T Progress. A total of 314 projects received the 2005 national S&T awards nationwide. Of them, 38 were second-place winners from the National Award for Natural Sciences (first-place winners were vacant); 40 won the National Award for Invention (one first-place winner) and 236 won the National Award for S&T Progress (18 first-place winners). In addition, five foreign scientists received National Award for S&T Cooperation. The following is a brief account of some of the CAS projects.
