Dual influence of the rejuvenation of Southern Tianshan and western kunlun orogen on the Cenozoic structure deformation of Tarim Basin,northwestern China:A superposition deformation model from Bachu Uplift

Based on new high-resolution seismic profiles and existing structural and sedimentary results, a superposition deformation model for Cenozoic Bachu Uplift of northwestern Tarim Basin, northwestern China is proposed. The model presents the idea that the Bachu Uplift suffered structure superposition deformation under the dual influences of the Cenozoic uplifting of Southern Tianshan and western kunlun orogen, northwestern China. In the end of the Eocene （early Himalayan movement）, Bachu Uplift started to be formed with the uplifting of western kunlun, and extended NNW into the interior of Kalpin Uplift. In the end of the Miocene （middle Himalayan movement）, Bachu Uplift suffered not only the NNW structure deformation caused by the western kunlun uplifting, but also the NE structure deformation caused by the Southern Tianshan uplifting, and the thrust front fault of Kalpin thrust system related to the Southern Tianshan orogen intrudes southeastward into the hinterland of Bachu Uplift and extends NNE from well Pil to Xiaohaizi reservoir and Gudongshan mountain, which resulted in the strata folded and denuded strongly. In the end of the Pliocene （late Himalayan movement）, the impact of Southern Yianshan orogen decreased because of the stress released with the breakthrough upward of Kalpin fault extending NE, and Bachu Uplift suffered mainly the structure deformation extending NW-NNW caused by the uplifting of western kunlun orogen.

Geochemistry of Mesoproterozoic Volcanic Rocks in the western kunlun Mountains: Evidence for Plate Tectonic Evolution

Mesoproterozoic volcanic rocks occurring in the north of the western kunlun Mountains can be divided into two groups. The first group (north belt) is an reversely-evolved bimodal series. Petrochemistry shows that the alkalinity of the rocks decreases from early to late: alkaline→calc-alkaline→tholeiite, and geochemistry proves that the volcanic rocks were formed in rifting tectonic systems. The sedimentary facies shows characteristics of back-arc basins. The second (south belt) group, which occurs to the south of Yutian-Minfeng-Cele, is composed of calc-alkaline island arc (basaltic) andesite and minor rhyolite. The space distribution, age and geochemistry of the two volcanite groups indicate that they were formed in a back-arc basin (the first group) and an island arc (the second group) respectively and indicate the plate evolution during the Mesoproterozoic. The orogeny took place at -1.05 Ga, which was coeval with the Grenville orogeny. This study has provided important geological data for exploring the position of the Paleo-Tarim plate in the Rodinia super-continent.

Integrated geophysical evidence for a new style of continent-continent collision beneath the western kunlun in the northwestern China

Along the western kunlun-Tarim-Tianshan geoscience transect in the northwestern China, an integrated geophysical investigation was carried out. Owing to the abominable natural conditions there, the sounding profile could not cross the whole transect, consequentially, a variety of velocity structures in the transverse and vertical orientations beneath the whole transect were not obtained, such as the case within the western kunlun orogenic belt. To supply a gap of deep seismic soundings within the western kunlun orogenic belt, we used the Bouguer gravity anomaly data and the relationship between the compressive wave and the density to obtain the density structure of the crust beneath the western kunlun and the southern Tarim basin by a forward fitting of gravity anomalies within the two-dimensional polygonal model of uniform medium. The crust of the Tarim basin with a rigid basement was like an asymmetrical arc, whose surface feature was the Bachu uplift in the middle of the Tarim basin. Beneath the conjoint area between the Tarim basin and the western kunlun belt, there was a V-shape structure located just up to the top of the uplifted Moho. The multi-seismological structures jointly revealed that the face-to-face continent-continent collision beneath the western kunlun is a new structural style within the continent-continent collision zone, which is a real model proved by the numerical modeling.

A newly defined,250 km by 500 km,Carboniferous-Triassic subduction-accretion complex,the Mazar accretionary prism in the western kunlun,comprises two subduction complexes and a forearc-basin succession.(1) The Bazar Dara subduction complex contains imbricated blocks of sandstone,arenite,limestone and meta-volcanic rocks in a matrix of weakly metamorphosed Triassic deep-sea *** meta-volcanic rocks include basalt,diabase,spilite,and andesitic *** element geochemistry shows that pillow and amygdaloidal basalts are oceanic-island *** zone has Ordovician to Permian fossils and is situated on the older, more highly deformed and metamorphosed side of the prism adjacent to the Sailiyak magmatic arc. (2) The Heweitan subduction complex is composed of blocks of limestone,turbidite,and radiolarite in a slate-phyllite matrix intercalated with calc-alkalic volcanic *** complex has Permian to Triassic fossils and is situated on the younger,less deformed,and metamorphosed side of the prism adjacent to the suture zone.(3) The Qitai forearc basins are infilled with turbidites(Late Triassic) intercalated with carbonates;these rocks overlie the accretionary *** accretion-related structure is dominated by large-scale northeast-dipping thrusts and subvertical cleavage stitched by 215-190 Ma *** is an overall decrease in metamorphic grade and deformation intensity from the arc to the suture zone across the Bazar Dara and Heweitan subduction *** Mazar accretionary prism formed by subduction-accretion processes during closure of the Paleotethyan Ocean and the final docking of the Gondwanan Karakoram-Qiangtang block to the Cathaysian(Eurasian) kunlun block.

The western kunlun orogenic belt in western China evolved through the development of a large subduction-accretionary complex, including flysch sediments and granitic plutons,and by collision of three terranes,namely the North and South kunlun and Karakorum-Qiangtang blocks from the early Paleozoic to the early ***-dipping subduction of the Paleo-Tethys ocean beneath the kunlun terranes,which may have commenced in the Cambrian,produced an early Paleozoic Andean-type magmatic arc on the South kunlun,and a marginal back arc basin,represented by the early Paleozoic Oytag-Kudi ophiolite belt,between the North and South kunlun.A northward subduction zone consumed the basin and the young,hot upper plate lithosphere was obducted southward onto the South kunlun following closure of the *** resulted in collision of the North and South kunlun in the early *** northward subduction of Paleo-Tethys resulted in the development of a Carboniferous-Triassic magmatic arc,and a back arc rifting sequence composed of the Carboniferous to Permian carbonates and clastic sediments on the North and South kunlun *** Paleo-Tethys ocean finally closed in the late Triassic-early Jurassic,when the kunlun and Karakorum-Qiangtang blocks were accreted,with the Kara-kunlun accretionary prism marking their suture zone.

The Kudi ophiolite in the western kunlun Mountains comprises harzburgites,dunites, cumulate dunites,cumulate pyroxenites and gabbros,diabase dikes,and pillow and massive lavas, and are fragments of a supra-subduction zone(SSZ) ophiolite of early *** extrusive rocks can be classified into three groups of tholeiites,i.e.,back-arc basin(BAB) tholeiites,low-Ti island arc tholeiites(IAT) and LREE-enriched IAT,as shown by their distinctive geochemical *** SSZ-type mantle peridotites,cumulate complex with arc tholeiite affinity,and BABB-type diabase dikes and basalts constitute an upper mantle and crustal section of a back-arc basin formed by coupling of MORB-type mantle upwelling with fluid efflux from slab *** low-Ti IAT are characterized by low Ti and HFSE,and slightly U-shaped or LREE-depleted chondrite-normalized REE patterns,and represent melts derived from a depleted mantle source region(extraction of BABB magma) modified compositionally by fluids and/or melts from the subducting lithospheric slab during propagation and extension of the back-arc *** interpret the LREE-enriched IAT as products of closure of the back-arc basin,since an interaction between the parental magma of this IAT and the mantle peridotites(formerly the upper mantle of the basin) in a newly formed mantle wedge had occurred.

The dike swarm of lamprophyres at Pishan on the SW margin of the Tarimterrane is composed of ultra-potassic lamprophyres that have intruded into the Proterozoichornblende schists. ^(40)Ar/^(39)Ar dating data suggest that the isochron ages for phlogopite andwhole rock separates of the lamprophyres are 231.7+-0.3 Ma and 228.5+-0.3 Ma, *** data indicate that the dikes were derived from a subduction-related or metasomatizedmantle. During the Middle-Late Triassic the western kunlun area entered the post-orogeny period, andthus the occurrence of the dike swarm in the study area may have been controlled by underplating.
