Study on wave characteristics from the South Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Guinea Based on Short-Term Numerical Simulation in Winter Season

waves play a major role in the ocean phenomena in the Gulf of Guinea(GoG). In order to reveal the spatial-temporal distribution characteristics and the propagation mechanism of waves from the South Atlantic Ocean to the GoG, 4typical points located in mid-latitude of South Atlantic(14°30′W, 30°0′S), south of the GoG(10°30′W, 15°0′S), offshore of the GoG(0°0′, 0°0′) and near shore of the GoG(6°4′58.8″W, 4°3′36″S) are selected, and waves from Atlantic Ocean to GoG are simulated by using a two-layer-nesting wave numerical model SWAN(Simulating waves Nearshore). The results show that the hybrid waves(waves hereafter) and the swells have strong relationship with local wind in Roaring Forties and at mid-latitude of South Atlantic Ocean, while there is no obvious correlation between waves and local winds in the GoG. Swells are generated in the South Atlantic Ocean and propagate into the GoG. 2D wave spectra at the four selected typical points are simulated. The spectral pattern and wave component structure indicate that the wave system in GoG is dominated by the S-SW swells generated from Roaring Forties and mid-latitude of South Atlantic, whether it is at maximum(2.2-2.8 m), medium(1.8-2.2 m) or minimum(1.2 m) significant wave height in the GoG during simulation period.

An experimental study of wave characteristics after jump in energy dissipation of hydraulic jump is presentedinthis *** was completed in a trough with a horizontal bed, 40cm in *** elements of wave were measured,the wave form,period,spectrum and its attenuation along course are analyzed,and the physical mechanism of wave is discussed. An expression of the maximum wave height after jump is given,based on the measured data. Some measures to diminish wave are discussed preliminarily also.

An innovative floating mooring system with two or more independent floating mooring platforms in the middle and one rigid platform on each side is proposed for improving efficiency and safety in shallow water. For this new system, most of collision energy is absorbed through the displacement of floating platforms. In order to illustrate the validity of the system, a series of model tests were conducted at a scale of 1:40. The coupled motion characteristics of the floating mooring platforms were discussed under regular and irregular waves, and the influences of wave direction and other characteristics on dynamic response of the system were analyzed. The results show that the mooring system is safest at 0° of wave incident angle, whereas the most dangerous mooring state occurs at 90° of wave incident angle. Motion responses increase with the increase of wave height, but are not linearly related to changes in wave height.

Increased utilization of the coastal zone to a multitude of activities including various shoreline developments related to transportation, tourism, fish farming and the increasing the wind and wave energy industries have lead to a growing demand for reliable information on the wave conditions.waves are one of the dominant phenomena that shape a coastline: they are largely responsible for beach erosion, long shore drift and elevated water levels. waves transport energy from remote area of the ocean to the coastline. When unleashed in the breaking process, this energy erodes beaches and can damage and destroy coastal structures such as sea walls, jetties and breakwaters.In many engineering studies, knowledge of the operational or of the extreme wave conditions in coastal waters including estuaries, tidal inlets, barriers islands with tidal flats channel etc;is required.In this thesis, I would like to describe the prediction and characteristics of wave in coastal regions. Mostly to determine the coastal wave climate and characteristics for the purpose of design of coastal structures and off-shore operations by using numerical simulation. Due to the absence of field data, numerical simulation becomes more *** obtain realistic estimates of random, short-crested wind-generated waves in such condition for a given bottom topography, wind field, water level and current field, the numerical wave model SWAN (Simulating waves Nearshore) can be used. SWAN wave model can be used not only for helping us to realize the wave effects on the coastal structures but also to predict the wave climate and characteristics in wave hind-casting.
