The thermal-hydrologic-mechanical(THM)coupled processes in water-based enhanced geothermal system(EGS)greatly influence the heat extraction performance of EGS.Many THM models have been proposed,however,there is a lack of detailed analysis of water storage,which is caused by the increments of reservoir porosity and water density,and the influence of water storage on the heat extraction performance needs to be uncovered.In this paper,a 3D THM model is established to simulate the water storage amount and heat extraction rate for a water-based EGS.The 3D THM model is verified against an analytical solution.Then,the influences of water storage are investigated,and comparisons between the THM and thermal-hydrologic(TH)processes are made for different initial reservoir porosities.The results show that the increment of reservoir porosity has a larger influence on water storage than that of water density.If ignoring water storage,the injection flow rate would be underestimated,while the production flow rate and heat extraction rate would be overestimated,and the reservoir would be cooled a little slower.Compared with the TH processes,the THM processes show larger cumulative water storage amount,higher steady-state heat extraction rate and higher cooling rate of reservoir,indicating that mechanical process has important influences on EGS performances.For higher initial reservoir porosity,the cumulative water storage amount is larger.It can be inferred that the water storage amount is related to the cooling rate of reservoir.The results of this paper show that water storage has a certain influence on the heat extraction rate,and that the mechanical process and initial reservoir porosity have important effects on the water storage amount,which should be simulated based on a THM model.

In the past few decades,the irrational use of water resources has resulted in many issues such as land subsidence in the North China Plain(NCP),hindering its socio-economic development.An accurate understanding of water resource changes is important for the allocation of water resources in the NCP.In this study,we employed Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment(GRACE) satellite data to monitor the total water storage(TWS) change in the NCP during 2004–2019.Evapotranspiration,precipitation,and runoff during 2004–2019 were sequentially examined,using the water balance formula(WBF),to retrieve TWS change.Furthermore,the soil moisture,snow water equivalent,and canopy water storage from the Global Land Data Assimilation System were used to calculate the natural component of the TWS variations.A comparison of these results revealed the drivers of the changes in water resources.The results showed that:(1) overall TWS retrieved by GRACE decreased substantially as a consequence of human activity,while TWS obtained by WBF fluctuated periodically around zero under the impact of three natural drivers;(2) TWS in the NCP fell at a remarkable rate of-12.39 mm/y from 2004 to 2019,and the natural part of TWS experienced two significant declines,during 2004–2010 and 2013–2016;(3) variations in runoff,precipitation,and evapotranspiration from 2004 to 2019 were not significant,but human activities contributed more to the decreasing TWS than natural factors.This study provides a reference for water resource management and groundwater exploitation across the NCP under climate change.

Accurate lake depth mapping and estimation of changes in water level and water storage are fundamental significance for understanding the lake water resources on the Tibetan Plateau.In this study,combined with satellite images and bathymetric data,we comprehensively evaluate the accuracy of a multi-factor combined linear regression model(MLR)and machine learning models,create a depth distribution map and compare it with the spatial interpolation,and estimate the change of water level and water storage based on the inverted depth.The results indicated that the precision of the random forest(RF)was the highest with a coefficient of determination(R2)value(0.9311)and mean absolute error(MAE)values(1.13 m)in the test dataset and had high reliability in the overall depth distribution.The water level increased by 9.36 m at a rate of 0.47 m/y,and the water storage increased by 1.811 km3 from 1998 to 2018 based on inversion depth.The water level change was consistent with that of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission(SRTM)method.Our work shows that this method may be employed to study the water depth distribution and its changes by combining with bathymetric data and satellite imagery in shallow lakes.

Changjiang River sediment delivering into the sea in response to water storage of Sanxia Reservoir in 2003

The Sanxia Reservoir on the Changjiang River stored water from 1 to 10 June and from 25 October to 5 November in 2003, elevating the water level to 135 and 139 m above mean sea level at the dam, respectively. A monthly dataset of water discharge, suspended sediment concentration （SSC） and sediment load of the Changjiang River from 1953 to 2003 measured at the Datong Hydrological Gauging Station of the downstreammost Changjiang River was mainly used to examine the Changjiang River sediment delivering into the sea in 2003 in response to the Sanxia Reservoir water storages in the same year. The results show that （1） compared with those in 2002, 2001, and the multi-yearly （1953-2000） average, both annual SSC and sediment load at Datong in 2003 were markedly reduced, and they were even smaller than the multi-yearly （1953-2000） minimum, although the annual runoff in 2003 did not change largely; and （2） compared with those in the corresponding months in 2002, 2001 and the multi-monthly average from 1953 to 2000, monthly SSC and sediment load at Datong both in June and November of 2003 were also markedly reduced, and those in June 2003 were even smaller than the multi-monthly minimum from 1953 to 2000. These may indicate that sediment sedimentation in the Sanxia Reservoir resulting from the Sanxia Reservoir water storage should be the main cause of the decreased annual and monthly SSC and sediment load of the Changjiang River into the sea in 2003. Besides, it seems that the Sanxia Reservoir water storage in the early June （flood season） of 2003 had more impacts on the decreased monthly SSC into the sea than that in the late October and early November （approximately non-flood season） of 2003.

Evolution algorithm for water storage forecasting response to climate change with little data sets:the Wolonghu Wetland,China

An attempt of applying a novel genetic programming(GP) technique,a new member of evolution algorithms,has been made to predict the water storage of Wolonghu wetland response to the climate change in northeastern part of China with little data set.Fourteen years(1993-2006) of annual water storage and climatic data set of the wetland were taken for model training and testing.The results of simulations and predictions illustrated a good fit between calculated water storage and observed values(MAPE=9.47,r=0.99).By comparison,a multilayer perceptron(MLP)(a popular artificial neural network model) method and a grey model(GM) with the same data set were applied for performances estimation.It was found that GP technique had better performances than the other two methods both in the simulation step and predicting phase and the results were analyzed and discussed.The case study confirmed that GP method is a promising way for wetland managers to make a quick estimation of fluctuations of water storage in some wetlands under condition of little data set.

Rose without prickle: genomic insights linked to moisture adaptation

Prickles act against herbivores, pathogens or mechanical injury, while also preventing water loss. However,whether prickles have new function and the molecular genetics of prickle patterning remain poorly explored. Here, we generated a high-quality reference genome assembly for ‘Basye’s Thornless’(BT), a prickle-free cultivar of Rosa wichuraiana, to identify genetic elements related to stem prickle development.The BT genome harbors a high level of sequence diversity in itself and with cultivar ‘Old Blush’(R. chinensis), a founder genotype in rose domestication. Inheritance of stem prickle density was determined and two QTL were identified. Differentially expressed genes in QTL were involved in water-related functions, suggesting that prickle density may hitchhike with adaptations to moist environments. While the prickle-related gene-regulatory-network(GRN) was highly conserved, the expression variation of key candidate genes was associated with prickle density. Our study provides fundamental resources and insights for genome evolution in the Rosaceae. Ongoing efforts on identification of the molecular bases for key rose traits may lead to improvements for horticultural markets.

The effect of mulching with straw, white plastic film and black plastic film for improving soil water storage and on the soil properties was examined in a wheat-maize rotation system on Loess soil in northwestern China. All the mulches improved the water storage to some extent and led to warmer soils. However, the organic C and total N contents of the soils declined significantly under the mulches, particularly the plastic film mulches,and this could have long-term detrimental effects on soil quality and the sustainability of the some mulching practices.

Using Landsat Images to Determine water Storing Capacity in Mediterranean Environments

Reservoirs play an important role in water management and are key elements for water supply.Monitoring is needed in order to guarantee the quantity and quality of stored water.However,this task is sometimes not easy.The objective of this study was to develop a procedure for predicting volume of stored water with remote sensing in water bodies under Mediterranean climate conditions.To achieve this objective,multispectral Landsat 7 and 8 images(NASA)were analyzed for the following five reservoirs:La Serena,La Pedrera,Beniarrés,Cubillas and Negratín(Spain).Reservoirs water surface was computed with the spectral angle mapper(SAM)algorithm.After that,cross-validation regression models were computed in order to assess the capability of water surface estimations to predict stored water in each of the reservoirs.The statistical models were trained with Landsat 7 images and were validated by using Landsat 8 images.Our results suggest a good capability of water volume prediction from free satellite imagery derived from surface water estimations.Combining free remote sensing images and open source GIS algorithms can be a very useful tool for water management and an integrated and efficient way to control water storage,especially in low accessible sites.

Prediction of Impending Drought Scenarios Based on Surface and Subsurface Parameters in a Selected Region of Tropical Queensland, Australia

Droughts occur in all climatic regions around the world costing a large expense to global economies. Reasonably accurate prediction of drought events helps water managers proper planning for utilization of limited water resources and distribution of available waters to different sectors and avoid catastrophic consequences. Therefore, a means to create a simplistic approach for forecasting drought conditions with easily accessible parameters is highly desirable. This study proposes and evaluates newly developed accurate prediction models utilizing various hydrologic, meteorological, and geohydrology parameters along with the use of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models with various forecast lead times. The present study develops a multitude of forecasting models to predict drought indices such as the Standard Precipitation Index with a lead-time of up to 6 months, and the Soil Moisture Index with a lead-time of 3 months. Furthermore, prediction models with the capability of approximating surface and groundwater storage levels including the Ross River Dam level have been developed with relatively high accuracy with a lead-time of 3 months. The results obtained from these models were compared to current values, revealing that ANN based approach can be used as a simple and effective predictive model that can be utilized for prediction of different aspects of drought scenarios in a typical study area like Townsville, North Queensland, Australia which had suffered severe recent drought conditions for almost six recent years (2014 to early 2019).

本文根据黄河治理现状提出黄河治理优化、转型的策略和路径，旨在充分发挥黄河自身的潜力，努力实现流域水资源利用的最大化、最优化，并对水资源的使用进行精细化管控，以求保持黄河水资源和水能资源的可持续供给，实现黄河自身水资源利用的最大化，以满足区域用水需求。借鉴岷江都江堰水利工程分流、引流的原理，根据黄河水势在不同年份、不同季节的变化，在黄河中上游汛期引流并筑坝储水、储能。创新储水、储能模式，借助先进的抽水蓄能电站原理，将西北丰富的风能、太阳能资源转换成水能储存，构建储水、储能的综合体，形成水资源和能源生产循环系统，实现对黄河水资源和能源利用的良性循环，并根据水资源和能源的需求来调节供水或供能，既可缓解汛期的洪水压力，又可在干旱年份或枯水季节供水、供能，缓解旱情。通过使用5G、智能技术、大数据等先进信息技术对整个流域各河段的水情进行监测和调控，以实现流量的稳定管控，避免负面效应的发生。
