Influencing factors of seismic signals generated by un-tuned large volume airgun array in a land reservoir

Un-tuned large volume airgun array in a water reservoir is recently proposed as a new way to generate seismic waves on land. It can be used to explore the earth velocity structure and its temporal variations as well. However, the characteristics of seismic signals （especially far-field signals） from an airgun array in a reservoir and its affecting factors （firing pressure, airgun towing depth, water level of the reservoir, etc.） has not been adequately studied. We analyzed the seismic data collected from field experiments at Binchuan Transmitting Seismic Station in 2011 and 2013 and found that （1） The similarity of seismic signals decrease with distance, which is most likely induced by the decay of signal amplitude and signal to noise ratio （SNR）; （2） The amplitudes of far-field airgun signals are almost linearly proportional to the firing pres- sure; （3） The towing depth far-field signals; （4） The signals are proportional to of airgun has less effects on the amplitudes of far-field airgun the water level of the reservoir.

Seasonal thermal energy storage using natural structures:GIS-based potential assessment for northern China

Seasonal thermal energy storage(STES)allows storing heat for long-term and thus promotes the shifting of waste heat resources from summer to winter to decarbonize the district heating(DH)*** being a promising solution for sustainable energy system,large-scale STES for urban regions is lacking due to the relatively high initial investment and extensive land *** close the gap,this study assesses the potentials of using two naturally available structures for STES,namely valley and ground pit *** on geographical information system(GIS)methods,the available locations are searched from digital elevation model and selected considering several criteria from land uses and construction *** costs of dams to impound the reservoir and the yielded storage capacities are then quantified to guide the choice of suitable *** assessment is conducted for the northern China where DH systems and significant seasonal differences of energy demand *** total,2,273 valley sites and 75 ground pit sites are finally identified with the energy storage capacity of 15.2 billion GJ,which is much larger than the existing DH demand in northern *** results also prove that 682 valley sites can be achieved with a dam cost lower than 20 CNY/m^(3).By conducting sensitivity analysis on the design dam wall height and elevations,the choices of available natural structures are expanded but practical issues about water pressures and constructions are also ***,the identified sites are geographically mapped with nearest urban regions to reveal their roles in the DH *** general,560 urban regions are found with potential STES units and most of them have STES storage capacities larger than their own DH *** novel planning methodology of this study and publicly available datasets create possibilities for the implementations of large-scale STES in urban DH systems.

Integrated nuclear techniques for sedimentation assessment in Latin American region

The paper shows the novel techniques introduction in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean in order to strengthen the surveillance and monitoring of the sedimentation phenomenon in the surface water *** integrated use of the nuclear techniques allows a more complete assessment of water and land *** the development of a regional project,supported by the International Agency of Atomic Energy,Cuba participates as technical leader for 15 countries,to encourage and implement the integrated application of 3 nuclear techniques(Fallout Radionuclides(137Cs,7Be,210pb),Compound Specific Stable Isotopes(fatty acids of the(e)13C)and the Isotopic Hydrology(18O,2H,3H).The methodology used in the last studies referred to RLA 5076 Project is to apply the integration of these three techniques allows evaluating,in the hydraulic facilities and surface water reservoirs,the negative sedimentation impacts in natural and anthropic process as environmental and social *** techniques evaluate the sedimentation process and its synergy,obtaining since the soil quantification in the landscape,definition the soil origin deposited until the dynamic characterization of the water body as soil *** integrated application of these nuclear techniques in the Project RLA-5076 confirms it as a useful tool to support the decisions makers in the definition of the national strategies and programs related to the land and the water resources *** the support of the IAEA projects in the Latin American and Caribbean region,has been evidenced an important increment in the use of these novel techniques.
