GUIDS: A Graphical user interface Development System in UniECAD

UniECAD is an integrated electronic CAD system, the user interface develotwent system is the key of the integration of UniECAD. This paper presents the architecture of GUIDS, a graphical user interface development system in UniECAD, and then discusses a series of new techniques and methods in the design and the implementation of this system around the following aspects: the editing environment of interface elements, the implementation of dialogue control and the automatic generation of interface code. As an example, the generation of the main interfaces of UniECAD shows the procedure of the development of user interfaces with this development system.

The user-computer interface for color selection is of great significance for the use of colors in computer graphics, particularly in some fields where the used colors have to be selected carefully. This paper discusses what factors have to be considered to design an effective user interface for color selec- tion. It also presents a method which shows how to represent 3D color spaces according to the psychol- ogy of color perception. Two examples of user interface for color selection are given. One is based on the CLELUV uniform color space, the other is based on RGB-rotated color model.

To work efficiently with DSS, most users need assistance in representation conversion, i. e., translating the specific outcome from the DSS into the universal language of visual. In generally, it is much easier to understand the results from the DSS if they are translated into charts, maps, and other scientific displays, because visualization exploits human natural ability to recognize and understand visual pattern. In this paper we discuss the concept of visualization for DSS. AniGraftool, a software system, is introduced as an example of Visualized user interface for DSS.

The Influence of a user-Centred Design Focus on the Effectiveness of a user interface for an Agricultural Machine

This study investigates the interface design of the domestic cross-border e-commerce mobile APP, and measures the user’s mental model of the interface. The research finds that only the ‘educational’ factor and the subject’s preference in the interface layout mode are related. Through interviews, the participants’ preferences for user interface layout, interface elements and their placement were investigated, and the optimal interface layout mode for cross-border e-commerce mobile terminals was constructed.

As agricultural machines become more complex, it is increasingly critical that special attention be directed to the design of the user interface to ensure that the operator will have an adequate understanding of the status of the machine at all times. A user-centred design focus was employed to develop two conceptual designs (UCD1 & UCD2) for a user interface for an agricultural air seeder. The two concepts were compared against an existing user interface (baseline condition) using the metrics of situation awareness (Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique), mental workload (Integrated Workload Scale), reaction time, and subjective feedback. There were no statistically significant differences among the three user interfaces based on the metric of situation awareness;however, UCD2 was deemed to be significantly better than either UCD1 or the baseline interface on the basis of mental workload, reaction time and subjective feedback. The research has demonstrated that a user-centred design focus will generate a better user interface for an agricultural machine.

Design and Evaluation of a user interface for an Autonomous Agricultural Sprayer

This paper describes the design and evaluation of a user interface for a remotely supervised autonomous agricultural sprayer. The interface was designed to help the remote supervisor to instruct the autonomous sprayer to commence operation, monitor the status of the sprayer and its operation in the field, and intervene when needed (i.e., to stop or shut down). Design principles and guidelines were carefully selected to help develop a human-centered automation interface. Evaluation of the interface using a combination of heuristic, cognitive walkthrough, and user testing techniques revealed several strengths of the design as well as areas that needed further improvement. Overall, this paper provides guidelines that will assist other researchers to develop an ergonomic user interface for a fully autonomous agricultural machine.

DualFace:Two-stage drawing guidance for freehand portrait sketching

Special skills are required in portrait painting, such as imagining geometric structures and facial detail for final portrait designs. This makes it a difficult task for users, especially novices without prior artistic training, to draw freehand portraits with high-quality details. In this paper, we propose dualFace, a portrait drawing interface to assist users with different levels of drawing skills to complete recognizable and authentic face sketches. Inspired by traditional artist workflows for portrait drawing, dualFace gives two-stages of drawing assistance to provide global and local visual guidance. The former helps users draw contour lines for portraits (i.e., geometric structure), and the latter helps users draw details of facial parts, which conform to the user-drawn contour lines. In the global guidance stage, the user draws several contour lines, and dualFace then searches for several relevant images from an internal database and displays the suggested face contour lines on the background of the canvas. In the local guidance stage, we synthesize detailed portrait images with a deep generative model from user-drawn contour lines, and then use the synthesized results as detailed drawing guidance. We conducted a user study to verify the effectiveness of dualFace, which confirms that dualFace significantly helps users to produce a detailed portrait sketch.

Pen-based user interfaces which leverage the affordances of the pen provide userswith more flexibility and natural interaction. However, it is difficult to construct usable pen-baseduser interfaces because of the lack of support for their development. Toolkit-level support has beenexploited to solve this problem, but this approach makes it hard to gain platform independence,easy maintenance and easy extension. In this paper a context-aware infrastructure is created,called WEAVER, to provide pen interaction services for both novel pen-based applications andlegacy GUI-based applications. WEAVER aims to support the pen as another standard interactivedevice along with the keyboard and mouse and present a high-level access interface to pen *** employs application context to tailor its service to different applications. By modeling theapplication context and registering the relevant action adapters, WEAVER can offer services,such as gesture recognition, continuous handwriting and other fundamental ink manipulations, toappropriate applications. One of the distinct features of WEAVER is that off-the-shelf GUI-basedsoftware packages can be easily enhanced with pen interaction without modifying the existing *** this paper, the architecture and components of WEAVER are described. In addition, examplesand feedbacks of its use are presented.
