Loss of life expectancy due to stroke and its subtypes in urban and rural areas in China,2005-2020

Stroke is characterised by high mortality and disability rate in China.This study aimed to explore the temporal trends in years of life lost(YLL)and loss of life expectancy due to stroke and its subtypes in urban and rural areas in China during 2005-2020.Data were obtained from China National Mortality Surveillance System.Abbreviated life and stroke-eliminated life tables were generated to calculate loss of life expectancy.The YLL and loss of life expectancy due to stroke in urban and rural areas at both national and provincial level during 2005-2020 were estimated.In China,the age-standardised YLL rate due to stroke and its subtypes were higher in rural areas than in urban areas.The YLL rate due to stroke showed a downward trend in both urban and rural residents from 2005 to 2020,decreased by 39.9%and 21.5%,respectively.Loss of life expectancy caused by stroke decreased from 1.75 years to 1.70 years from 2005 to 2020.During which,loss of life expectancy due to intracerebral haemorrhage(ICH)decreased from 0.94 years to 0.65 years,while that of ischaemic stroke(IS)increased from 0.62 years to 0.86 years.A slightly upward trend was observed in loss of life expectancy caused by subarachnoid haemorrhage(SAH),from 0.05 years to 0.06 years.Loss of life expectancy due to ICH and SAH was always higher in rural areas than in urban areas,whereas that of IS was higher in urban areas than in rural areas.Rural males suffered the greatest loss of life expectancy due to ICH and SAH,while the highest loss of life expectancy caused by IS was found in urban females.Furthermore,Heilongjiang(2.25 years),Tibet(2.17 years)and Jilin(2.16 years)were found to have the highest loss of life expectancy caused by stroke in 2020.Loss of life expectancy caused by ICH and SAH was higher in western China,while the disease burden of IS was heavier in northeast China.Stroke remains a major public health problem in China,although the age-standardised YLL rate and loss of life expectancy due to stroke decreased.Evidence-based strategies should be co

Our world is experiencing unprecedented land cover and land use changes(LCLUC)due to population growth,economic development,and global climate change.urbanization,one major form of LCLUC,has received growing attention for its significant role in changing ecological processes and functions of urban landscapes.There is a growing need,from both the academic and the policy-making communities,for science-based information and evidence to enhance our understanding of the urban ecological processes and societal needs because of the rapid urbanization over the past few decades across the world.Such information is key to informing the development of best practices for improved landscape and urban planning.

The rapid pace of global urbanization is profoundly reshaping our planet and will have significant implicatins for global sustainable development.According to the United Nations,urbanization is projected to surge from 56%in 2020to 67%by 2050,an 11%increase.'The expanding urban population has led to the con-version of an increasing amount of natural land into urban areas.It is anticipated that by 2030,urban areas across the globe will cover approximately 587 million km2,which is double the rate of population growth.2 In general,the availability of flat land resources suitable for both production and habitation is limited,and the relentless pace of urbanization consistently encroaches upon these resources.Consequently,adopting the"slope climbing"model for urban expansion has been prevalent in numerous regions and nations as a strategy to address the conflict between urban expansion and the scarcity of flat land resources.

Extreme heat is among the deadliest of weather-related hazards,exerting far-reaching impacts on the natural environment and human society globally.Its risk has been rising worldwide over the past decades,particularly in densely populated urban settlements in which more than half the world’s population live.1,2 This rise is primarily attributed to anthropogenic greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions,of which the dominant share is contributed by the Global North.1 The Global North comprises economically developed countries with higher levels of industrialization,technology,infrastructures,energy consumption,and GHG emissions(e.g.,North America and West Europe)whose cities are major emission hotspots.1 Besides,emission transfers via international trade from the Global South,encompassing countries with lower economic development and energy consumption,higher poverty,and more vulnerable infrastructures(e.g.,India and Brazil)compared with the Global North,contribute a nonnegligible share of GHGs.

The onset of global urbanization has led to a population shift from rural to urban areas and the expansion of urban development [1-3]. urban land areas are growing at faster rates than their populations in most parts of the world [4]. The urban sprawl process refers to dispersed land development characterized by low-density, unplanned, and uneven patter ns of growth duri ng urban expansion. This process can result in inefficient use of land resources contradictory to the principle of sustainable development [5]. Additionally, urban sprawl has various environmental, economic, and social consequences, including the following: loss of agricultural land, higher costs for transportation infrastructure, increased landscape fragmentation, degeneration of soil ecological functions, and reduced ecosystem resilience. It is crucial to understand the trends and patterns of urban sprawl to implement a framework for sustainable urban development in developing regions.

Data volume grows explosively with the proliferation of powerful smartphones and innovative mobile applications.The ability to accurately and extensively monitor and analyze these data is necessary.Much concern in cellular data analysis is related to human beings and their behaviours.Due to the potential value that lies behind these massive data,there have been different proposed approaches for understanding corresponding patterns.To that end,analyzing people's activities,e.g.,counting them at fixed locations and tracking them by generating origindestination matrices is crucial.The former can be used to determine the utilization of assets like roads and city attractions.The latter is valuable when planning transport infrastructure.Such insights allow a government to predict the adoption of new roads,new public transport routes,modification of existing infrastructure,and detection of congestion zones,resulting in more efficient designs and improvement.Smartphone data exploration can help research in various fields,e.g.,urban planning,transportation,health care,and business marketing.It can also help organizations in decision making,policy implementation,monitoring,and evaluation at all levels.This work aims to review the methods and techniques that have been implemented to discover knowledge from mobile phone data.We classify these existing methods and present a taxonomy of the related work by discussing their pros and cons.

Background:Little is known about potential urban-rural differences in adverse pregnancy outcomes.The purpose of this study is to look into the urban-rural differences in the trend of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.Methods:We retrospectively assessed the pregnancy outcome of singleton pregnant mothers who gave birth at a tertiary hospital in Bandar Abbas,Iran,between January 1st,2020,and January 1st,2022.Mothers were divided into two groups based on living residency:1)urban groupand 2)rural group.Demographic factors,obstetrical factors,maternal comorbidities,and adverse maternal and neonatal outcomeswere extracted from the electronic data of each mother.The Chi-square testwas used to compare differences between the groups for categorical variables.Logistic regression models were used to assess the association of adverse pregnancy,childbirth,and neonatal outcome with living residency.Results:Of 8888 mothers that gave birth during the study period,2989(33.6%)lived in rural areas.Adolescent pregnancy was more common in the rural area.urban mothers had a higher education than rural mothers.Rural mothers were at higher risk for preterm birth aOR 1.81(CI:1.24-2.99),post-term pregnancy aOR 1.5(CI:1.07-2.78),anemia aOR 2.02(CI:1.07-2.34),low birth weight(LBW)aOR 1.89(CI:1.56-2.11),need for neonatal resuscitation aOR 2.66(CI:1.78-3.14),and neonatal intensive care unit(NICU)admission aOR 1.98(CI:1.34-2.79).On the other hand,the risk of cesarean section was significantly lower compared to urban mothers aOR 0.58(CI:0.34-0.99).Conclusions:Our study discovered that mothers living in rural areas had a higher risk of developing anemia,preterm birth,post-term pregnancies,LBW,need for neonatal resuscitation,and NICU admission,but a lower risk of cesarean section.

urban vacant land in growing urbanization:An international review

urban growth and shrinkage constitute the overall pattern of growing urbanization across the globe.Studies on urban vacant land(UVL)are few,and have proved to be mainly rudimentary and subjective.This paper first presents the definition of UVL based on bibliometric analysis.Typology,morphology,proximate causes,and the multiple functions of UVL are then analyzed at parcel,transect,city,and national levels based on an international review.Results show that UVL can be categorized by land cover,land usage,and land ownership.Worldwide,UVL has been widespread and extensive.For example,the occurrence probabilities of UVL in the cases of Guangzhou and New York are 8.46%-8.88%and 3.17%-5.08%,respectively.The average vacancy rate of residential land amounts to 11.48%in 65 U.S.cities.Generally,UVL shows fragmentation and irregular shape,and significant spatial differences exist at parcel,transect,city,and national levels.Proximate causes,such as excessive land division,irregularly shaped land parcels,decreases in resident population,deindustrialization,land speculation,insufficient investment,and environmental concerns,can all result in UVL.Currently,UVL has become a gray area of social,economic,and ecological space.However,it can also be considered a potential resource for enhancing urban sustainability.Policy implications to promote urban sustainability using monitoring,control,and differential revitalization of UVL are presented.
